Mortgage rates have dropped nearly 20 basis points this week, with 30-year rates now near 5.7%, according to Zillow data. Current 30-Year Mortgage RatesAverage 30-year mortgage rates have inched down this week and are now hovering near 5.7%, according to Zillow data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile. Because markets are already anticipating that the Fed will lower rates, mortgage rates might not drop much in response to a Fed rate cut.

Geologic hydrogen — sometimes known as white, gold or natural hydrogen — refers to hydrogen gas that is found in its natural form beneath Earth's surface. Pete Johnson, CEO and co-founder of Koloma, told CNBC that geologic hydrogen is fundamentally an exploration and production business. A primary energy source, such as coal, oil, wind or solar, refers to a natural energy source that has not been altered or converted. It's within this context that momentum has been growing over the potential of geologic hydrogen. Ellis said that just a small percentage of geologic hydrogen recovery might well be enough to supply all the projected demand for 200 years.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Signet Jewelers CEO Gina Drosos described the mood of consumers looking to buy engagement rings, saying demand is there, but many are more judicious when picking out diamonds. "We thought that engagements might come back a little faster, but there is a cautious consumer," Drosos said. She added that "newness" accelerated during the quarter, and customers are responding well to new products like sculpted gold. On the conference call, Drosos said Signet saw a 50% increase in revenue from new merchandise. Signet reported a mixed quarter before Thursday's open, with management optimistic about the momentum of same-store sales.

CNN —US producer prices continued to cool overall in August, showing that inflation across the economy is improving. But a closely watched measure of underlying inflation remained stubbornly elevated, reflecting the bumpiness in reining in price hikes. August’s monthly increase was driven by a 0.4% gain on the services side, as goods prices were unchanged, thanks in part to falling energy prices. Economists had expected that prices would increase 0.2% on a monthly basis and 1.8% annually, according to FactSet estimates. Excluding the more volatile categories of food and energy, core PPI advanced 0.3% from July, countering a 0.2% decline seen the month before.

The rate of fraud alerts is "absolutely" going up, according to Deloitte U.S. risk & financial advisory principal Satish Lalchand. About 60% of credit card holders in 2023 experienced some sort of attempted fraud, according to Experian. "Fraud in general across all channels, whether it's check fraud, credit card fraud payments, the peer-to-peer payments, everything, is significantly increasing at a very rapid pace," Lalchand said. It has forecast a persistent threat that could reach nearly $400 billion in card fraud in the decade to 2032. "When we come down to credit cards, financial institutions are investing more in the concept of fraud and fraud modernization, replacing older technology and having better fraud detection capabilities, and retuning their alerts," Lalchand said.

Hong Kong CNN —Hyundai and General Motors (GM) have agreed to look for ways to work together on developing new vehicles, supply chains and technologies in an effort to cut costs and move more quickly. South Korea’s Hyundai and America’s GM (GM) said on Thursday they would collaborate on joint product development, manufacturing and future clean energy technologies. The non-binding framework agreement was signed by Hyundai Motor Executive Chair Euisun Chung and GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

But while mortgage rates are one piece of the housing crisis puzzle, don't expect mortgage-rate relief to fix the locked-up housing market, according to Zillow's Chief Economist Skylar Olsen. In fact, she thinks falling mortgage rates could have a long-term effect of locking up the housing market even more. If more people are able to afford houses but existing owners aren't selling, then the housing market will remain frozen. As a result, mortgage rate relief might temporarily open up the housing market, but any relief is likely to be short-lived. Until then, don't bank on lower mortgage rates to unlock the housing market.

Japanese wages are expected to grow in real terms in the second half of 2024 for the first time in more than three decades, according to Asset Management One. Wages in Japan are rising more rapidly than they did in 2023, the investment management firm noted in a recent report. Japanese real wages in July rose 0.4% year on year, rising for a second consecutive month after a 1.1% rise in June. Asset Management One economists anticipate regular wages likely maintained this rate of growth this summer, despite recent volatility in the yen and Japanese equities. "The past three decades in Japan have been defined by minimal price inflation and negligible wage growth," said Yuko Iizuka, economist at Asset Management One.

The PS5 Pro will go on sale on November 7 at $700, about 40% more expensive than the PS 5 when it launched in 2020, Sony said on Tuesday. The newest console will have much more powerful computing power, allowing up to 45% faster rendering for game play, Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro revealed in a video presentation. “Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” he said. Sales of the PS5 have lagged behind its predecessor, the PS4, of which more than 114 million units had been sold since its launch in 2013. The PS4 had dominated the gaming world and far outpaced its rival Xbox One developed by Microsoft Gaming.

Read preview"What Nvidia's really good at is creating new markets," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon at a technology conference hosted by the investment bank Wednesday. Solomon asked the most important question in tech today: Where is the return on investment from all this investment in AI infrastructure? AdvertisementFirst, in the age of generative AI, Huang said, cloud providers who buy Nvidia (and other) GPUs and rent them to tech companies, make $5 for every $1 they spend. Huang argued that upgrading existing data centers to "accelerated computing," or the parallel computing that Nvidia GPUs and other AI chips enable, is inevitable. Even if Nvidia's claims that AI computing is more energy efficient are true, the AI boom is expected to put massive pressure on electricity grids.

As AI improves each day, Musk said it's more likely to have a positive effect on the world — but there's still a 20% risk of "human annihilation." Although he joked about humanity's annihilation, Musk said the bigger challenge of AI is people not knowing what to do with themselves anymore. Kai-Fu Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of Sinovation Ventures, speaks during the HICOOL Global Entrepreneur Summit on September 11, 2021 in Beijing, China. BEIJING — Chinese artificial intelligence models may be at least half a year behind those developed in the U.S., but Chinese AI apps will likely take off much faster, said Kai-Fu Lee, former head of Google China. The top Chinese companies' LLMs are about six to nine months behind their U.S. counterparts, while less advanced Chinese models may lag the U.S. by about 15 months, Lee said. Lee, author of "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order,“ is a widely followed commentator on AI, and is the founder of startup 01.AI as well as venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures. "Apps, I would predict, by early next year will proliferate in China much faster than in the U.S.," Lee said, noting that the cost of training a good AI model has fallen significantly.

One way to tackle these problems is to make chocolate without using cocoa beans — the fermented seed of the cacao tree. It also makes cocoa powder and cocoa butter substitutes. “Instead of cocoa beans, we use fava beans sourced from farms across the UK and Europe, and then we ferment them in a similar way that cocoa farmers ferment their cocoa beans,” said Ross Newton, CEO of Nukoko, a UK-based startup that aims to launch on its domestic market next year. A study published this year shows it’s possible to make chocolate using only the cocoa pod, by replacing traditional sugar with a cocoa gel. “You make chocolate using only components from the fruit and not conventional crystallized sugar from sugar beets.

Read previewChina's exports are booming, but profits could be under pressure, recent data from the country showed. China's exports rose 8.7% in August from a year ago to nearly $309 billion — a two-year high, official data showed on Tuesday. Imports, meanwhile, edged up by just 0.5% in August from a year ago — a sign that domestic demand was still weak. While China's robust exports have been supporting the country's flagging economy amid weak demand, data suggest that exporters have been slashing prices to stay competitive — a trend some economists have flagged. Meanwhile, official data released on Monday showed China's Producer Price Index — which measures the price of goods at the factory gate — falling 1.8% from a year ago.
