Follow live coverage of Wimbledon 2024Welcome to the Wimbledon briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On day eight of Wimbledon 2024, Elena Rybakina stepped up to her new billing, the ATP made a germy decision, and there was chaos on Court One. Elena Rybakina is one of three players left in the women’s field who has won a Grand Slam title before. Rybakina plays with a big serve and with flat power that keeps her ball low. More importantly, do we too often discount the data point of winning a tournament on grass the week before Wimbledon?

I'm an American living in Denmark, and for the first time I am having to play by the cultural and legal rules of Danish summer vacation. When your child starts attending public school, schools close down during the summer period. In Denmark, enjoying a long summer vacation isn't just a perk — it's a right under the Danish Holiday Act, called Ferieloven. The Holiday Act says that employees should ideally inform their employers about their leave plans three months in advance for the main holiday period. Shares of Dutch food delivery marketplace Just Eat Takeaway.com could more than double over the next 12 months, according to Jefferies analysts. Jefferies remains bullish on Just Eat, even as the company's U.S. business Grubhub has faced the pressures of government price controls imposed on restaurants since the Covid-19 pandemic. Just Eat expects a $100 million EBITDA impact from the amending of the fee caps, the Jefferies note reported. Shares of the delivery firm have also moved away from their high during the Covid pandemic, and are now down 18.1% year-to-date and 22.5% in the last 12 months. It also trades as an American Depository Receipt in the U.S. — CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

CNN —President Joe Biden told top donors on a video call Monday that he is still the best candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump as the Biden campaign and the White House sought to move beyond a crisis threatening to consume the Democratic Party. “It’s still a huge hole to climb out of,” the Democratic donor said, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign. While the Biden campaign has pointed to a rush of small-dollar donations over the past week, a senior adviser said the falloff among high-dollar contributors was highly troubling. Morgan blamed Biden’s campaign team for his debate performance and argued that Vice President Kamala Harris is in place “if something happens” to Biden. And that’s what people need to be focusing on.”Phillips said anxious Democratic donors “need to get out of their feelings” and instead put their energy behind turning out those voters and selling them on the administration’s accomplishments.

In 2022, Delta Air Lines offered passengers $10,000 cash to take a different flight after overselling a flight from Michigan to Minnesota amid the summer's post-pandemic travel chaos. DOT rules entitle passengers to hundreds of dollars in compensation if they are involuntarily bumped from a flight, under certain terms and conditions. How to lower the odds of getting bumped from a flightThere's nothing you can do to guarantee you won't get bumped from an overbooked flight, as one traveler who said he was bumped off an American Airlines flight learned the hard way. According to the DOT's 2023 consumer air travel data, Allegiant Air, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines involuntarily bumped 0, 3, and 5 people, respectively, over the entire year. On the other end of the spectrum, American Airlines and Frontier Airlines involuntarily bumped over 10,000 passengers each in 2023.

CNN —If President Joe Biden is not the Democratic nominee coming out of the August party convention, it will have to be Vice President Kamala Harris. African Americans make up about 14% of the American population, yet in 2020 nearly 20% of Biden voters were Black, according to Pew Research Center. You think the ignominy of Harris campaigning for someone else is going to bring Black voters into the fold? Hours after a battle in eastern Ukraine in August, a wounded and unarmed Russian soldier crawled through a nearly destroyed trench, seeking help from his captors, a unit of international volunteers led by an American. Caspar Grosse, a German medic in that unit, said he saw the soldier plead for medical attention in a mix of broken English and Russian. That is when, Mr. Grosse said, a fellow soldier hobbled over and fired his weapon into the Russian soldier’s torso. Another soldier fired — “just shot him in the head,” Mr. Grosse recalled in an interview. Mr. Grosse said he was so upset by the episode that he confronted his commander.

Both companies made a splash at this year's upfront presentations, where streamers make their pitches for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending and advertisers seek to lock down the bulk of their annual TV ad commitments. But among newer streamers, it's Amazon that's winning advertisers' wallets, several ad buyers told Business Insider. AdvertisementAmazon's big increase in ad inventory and lower ad prices, of about half the ad rate ($30 per 1,000 impressions) that Netflix sought when it launched its ad tier in 2022, put pressure on other TV ad sellers to lower their prices. A second ad-holding-company exec said they expected Amazon to be the third or fourth biggest TV ad seller in the upfronts, behind traditional TV stalwarts NBCUniversal and Disney and potentially YouTube. Data has shown that people watch three times as much Netflix as they do Prime Video, although Prime Video viewing is growing.

Things should have been settled. The weary delegates should have already chosen a presidential nominee, packed up their Welcome to New York souvenirs and returned home in time for the nation’s celebration of what it stood for. Just a few dozen miles to the south, it was celebrating a white-nationalist Independence Day with a hood-and-robe parade right down the Broadway of a beachside New Jersey city.
