With Europe seeing an explosion of visitors a year after Covid travel restrictions dropped, incidents of visitors behaving badly in Italy show no sign of abating. Think that’s bad? Meanwhile in Venice, tourists routinely swim in the UNESCO-protected canals, which double as the city’s sewer system. “Tourists don’t know how to relate to the artistic heritage because they have no relation with our history – so they refer to their cultural imagination, and therefore to our cinema. “So many tourists have said to me over the years, ‘In Italy there are no rules.’ But they are mistaken.

CNN —After six years of preparation, struggle and sacrifice, Felix Baumgartner found himself quite literally on the edge of the world. “I’m standing there on top of the world outside of a capsule in space and in the stratosphere. "The only thing that I didn't know when I landed was: did I break the speed of sound," says Baumgartner. “Once I was on my way, I slowly started to spin in one direction, then I start spinning in the opposite direction, and then I really started spinning faster and faster and faster,” Baumgartner explained. I was reconnected to the outside world, and that was a very happy moment.
WASHINGTON — The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol plans to vote to subpoena former President Donald Trump, sources familiar with the committee's plans told NBC News Thursday. On his way to the hearing, Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told reporters the panel had not yet ruled out a subpoena for Trump. He said at the start of the hearing that the committee would take a vote "based on new evidence." Thursday's hearing would once again place Trump at the center of plans to overturn the election, ultimately leading to the violence on Jan. 6, committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said in her opening statement. A Rafting Trip in Utah For Only the Lucky Few

AS THE CURRENT of the upper San Juan River pushed past me, I balanced on a paddleboard wedged into a rock cluster on one of its banks. The green waters flowed down the same southeast Utah course they’d carved for millions of years, indifferent to my desire to stay put and contemplate the rock art—an array of handprints—on the cliff above. I’d almost missed this display, which my guidebook estimated to be about a thousand years old, give or take a century, its author noting that the handprints’ significance is unknown. As I took in the mysterious art, the only sounds were birdsong and river burbles, and soon, I gave in to the unrelenting downstream push of the water. I had to catch up with my friends Theresa and James and their 5-year-old daughter, Fiadh, on the sapphire-blue, 16-foot raft just downriver, not to mention the supplies we’d packed for our three-night voyage.

CNN —There are signs that the United Kingdom could be heading into a fall Covid-19 wave, and experts say the United States may not be far behind. A recent increase in Covid-19 cases in England doesn’t seem to be driven by a new coronavirus variant, at least for now, although several are gaining strength in the US and across the pond. Spector runs the Zoe Health Study, which uses an app to let people in the UK and US report their daily symptoms. After seeing a downward trend for the past few weeks, the Zoe study saw a 30% increase in reported Covid-19 cases within the past week. In the US, some models have predicted that Covid-19 cases will begin to rise again in October and continue to increase into the winter.
Here’s the deal: The British pound tumbled to a record low against the US dollar on Monday as investors around the world dumped UK assets. For the first time in history, the pound is on track to hit parity with the dollar before the end of the year. Part of the pressure on the pound comes from the strong dollar, which has gotten a boost from the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes. But the pound is also falling against the euro, signaling broader concerns about the UK’s financial health. “This is a painful reminder that economic policy is not a game,” said Torsten Bell, chief executive of the Resolution Foundation, a think tank that focuses on boosting living standards for low- to middle-income households.
When Anjali Ramani and Konstantinos Koiliaris set out to look for a new home last summer, they knew they wanted something turnkey, with good light and at least 1,000 square feet. Ms. Ramani, 26, was born in Singapore to an Indian family committed to Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian philosophy of architecture and design. “When my parents checked, they told us the door either had to face north or east to be good for us and to bring us happiness,” Ms. Ramani said. “We always thought we’d start with something small, maybe just try to get our hands on a one-bedroom, and go from there,” Ms. Ramani said. “A lot of our house-hunting was actually about his preferences,” Ms. Ramani said.
New Delhi CNN —Movie theaters in Indian-controlled Kashmir have reopened their doors, more than two decades after they were forced shut during an armed rebellion that saw multiple threats and attacks on crowded public places. The lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated the disputed region’s newest cinema on Tuesday, in a ceremony marked with much hype and fanfare. The movie theater will open to the public on September 30, according to businessman, Vijay Dhar, who has partnered with Indian cinema chain Inox Leisure Ltd., to open the theater in Srinagar. Financial markets are on a knife’s edge, and have been for weeks, as they await word from the central bank on how much monetary tightening to expect. The 40-year evolution from :-) to 😂 emojis

The evolution from : - ) to 😂It didn’t take long for the original emoticon and its many variations to spread beyond Carnegie Mellon. This emoji remains the favorite among US users, according to an Adobe study released this month. The consortium relies on subcommittee members and emoji users to push the keyboard forward. Daniel, the first woman to run Unicode’s Emoji Subcommittee and a designer at Google, has been a champion for more inclusive emojis. While there are now thousands of emoji options, the main usage remains loyal to the original goal 40 years ago of adding a smile and some levity.
The biggest problem: It just doesn’t look cool. To get into the metaverse in the first place, you first have to strap on a bulky headset like Meta’s $400 Quest device. VR avatars also need to respond in real time to the ways we move our faces and bodies, which requires powerful computing and graphics processing. Still, FedEx Ground is refusing to offer the kind of across-the-board financial relief to its contractors that Patton and others are seeking. “We recognize that current economic conditions are posing new challenges,” FedEx Ground said in a statement.

That’s never ever going to happen, though, so it’s a good thing I use a moka pot. Specifically, the Cuisinox Roma stainless steel stovetop moka pot, a superior choice that I wish I’d found sooner. Moka pots are easy to use. The Cuisinox Roma is also dishwasher-safe, unlike aluminum moka pots, and induction-compatible. I’ve had my Cuisinox Roma for six years and counting, and no issues so far.
