USGS/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island began to erupt on Sunday afternoon, with flows currently confined to the surrounding crater floor, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on Sunday. Webcam images show fissures at the base of the volcano's crater that are generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. Located in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea is one of the world's most active volanoes. In 2019, a string of earthquakes and major eruption at Kilauea led to the destructions of hundreds of homes and businesses.

A view of Chevron-operated Gorgon project on Barrow Island, Australia, as seen in this undated handout image obtained by Reuters on September 8, 2023. “Unfortunately, following numerous meetings and conciliation sessions with the Fair Work Commission, no agreement has been reached as the unions are asking for terms significantly above the market," a Chevron spokesperson said in a statement. "Until we have some case law, until we get some Fair Work Commission decisions on how the laws work, we don't know (how long the process will take)," said Shae McCrystal, a professor of labour law at the University of Sydney Law School. A subsidiary of airline Virgin Australia made the only other application under these laws in June, local media reported. No talks are scheduled between unions and Chevron, according to the FWC website.

Rains from dying typhoon batter China for seventh day
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BEIJING, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Heavy rains from a typhoon kept southern China drenched for the seventh day as slow-moving storm clouds drifted from Guangdong on the coast to Guangxi, flooding low-lying areas, blocking roads and trapping residents. Heavy rain is expected to persist in Guangxi over the next few days. Neighbouring Hong Kong was pelted by the worst storm in 140 years. "Typhoons that move far inland affect regions historically less exposed to heavy rainfall and strong wind, often with lower disaster resilience, leading to more severe losses," said Shao Sun, a climatologist at the University of California, Irvine. China's debt-riddled property sector accounts for one-quarter of the state's economic activity. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attends a celebration event marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the country, which falls on September 9, in North Korea, in this picture released on September 10, 2023. North Korea's state media have been silent about the trip, first reported by the New York Times citing U.S. officials, which South Korea's intelligence agency said was possible. North Korea in turn may be looking to fill shortfalls in military resources such as in its development of nuclear weapons that can be delivered by ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines, analysts have said. South Korea's military said the submarine did not appear ready for normal operations, and that there were signs North Korea was attempting to fabricate or exaggerate its capabilities. The Serb battled past American Ben Shelton in straight sets on Friday to set up a rematch with Russia's Medvedev, who denied him a rare calendar Grand Slam two years ago. A final involving former-U.S. Open champions Medvedev and three-time winner Novak Djokovic on Sunday is one of obvious high quality but not the next chapter in tennis's hottest rivalry of Djokovic and Alcaraz that has had the sport buzzing. The last time Djokovic and Medvedev clashed at the U.S. Open was the 2021 final, where the Russian claimed his only major so far and denied the Serb a rare calendar Grand Slam. "The challenge is you are playing a guy who has won 23 Grand Slams and I have only one," said Medvedev, who also reached the 2019 U.S. Open final losing to Rafa Nadal. That was all Alcaraz would need, holding on to take the set 6-3 and the first step in his fight back. Alcaraz would make one final stand in a breathtaking game that seesawed back and fourth, Medvedev needing four match points to close the deal.
