The annual cost of overall care for patients prior to taking Wegovy or a similar drug was $12,371, on average, according to the analysis. The costs for a similar control group of patients not taking the drugs decreased by 4% over the same period. The analysis by Prime Therapeutics, a pharmacy benefits manager (PBM), reviewed pharmacy and medical claims data for 4,255 people with commercial health plans. For the analysis, Prime Therapeutics excluded patients with type 2 diabetes to focus on obesity treatment. In trials with adults, Novo found that 6.8% of patients taking Wegovy discontinued treatment due to gastrointestinal problems and other adverse events.

In this photo illustration, boxes of the diabetes drug Ozempic rest on a pharmacy counter on April 17, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. But it could potentially include Eli Lilly 's diabetes drug Mounjaro, which is approved in the EU. Liraglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk's weight loss drug Saxenda. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in the Danish company's weight loss injection, Wegovy, and its diabetes counterpart, Ozempic. They mimic a hormone produced in the gut called GLP-1 to suppress a person's appetite and ultimately aid with weight loss.

The European Medicines Agency said Monday it would undertake a review into a number of drugs used to treat obesity and diabetes after it was reported some patients experienced thoughts of suicide or self-harm. "The review is being carried out in the context of a signal procedure raised by the Icelandic Medicines Agency following three case reports," the EMA said. The EMA said the case reports "included 2 cases of suicidal thoughts, one following the use of Saxenda and one after Ozempic. "The semaglutide-containing medicine Wegovy and the liraglutide-containing medicine Saxenda are authorised for weight loss, together with diet and physical activity," the EMA said. "Suicidal behaviour is not currently listed as a side effect in the EU product information of these medicines," the EMA said.

EU probes Novo Nordisk drugs after reports of suicidal thoughts

Suicidal thoughts are not currently listed as a side effect in the EU product information of these treatments. Side effects have hobbled several previous attempts by the drug industry to develop lucrative weight-loss drugs. Sanofi's (SASY.PA) Acomplia, which never won a U.S. approval, was withdrawn in Europe in 2008 after being linked to suicidal thoughts. New weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy, however, regulate appetite by mimicking a gut hormone, and not directly interfere with brain chemistry. Safety data did not show any "causal association" between the suicidal or self-harming thoughts and the drugs, it added.

Germany's health ministry told Reuters there were no plans to change the law to cover weight loss drugs. DIFFERENT PICTUREIn the United States, the federal Medicare health plan for older Americans is prohibited from covering weight-loss drugs. Many health plans paid for by large employers will cover Wegovy, although they may require that patients try a rigorous diet programme or cheaper drugs first.

BEIJING, July 5 (Reuters) - China's Commerce Minister told foreign pharmaceuticals firms they can expect "more development opportunities" during a roundtable on Wednesday, his ministry said, as drugmakers bemoan government procurement policies pricing them out of the market. Foreign pharmaceuticals firms have struggled to cement any inroads they have made into the world's second-largest economy, with the government maintaining a drug procurement programme that forces them to slash their prices and refusing to approve the use of any foreign COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic. But as China pursues home-grown modernisation it will also open up "more development opportunities for foreign-funded enterprises, including the pharmaceutical industry," Wang told the meeting. Wang told the meeting on Wednesday that his ministry will expand the channels of communication for responding to and solving concerns, with the meeting resulting in 25 specific suggestions to be taken forward. Moderna on Wednesday said it struck a deal with Chinese officials to research, develop and manufacture messenger RNA medicines in the country, despite rising tensions between the U.S. and China. The Massachusetts-based biotech company signed a memorandum of understanding and a related land collaboration deal to develop drugs that will "be exclusively for the Chinese people" and won't "be exported," a Moderna spokesperson told CNBC. The Moderna spokesperson did not confirm the report or comment on the size of the deal. Moderna in May said it was keen to sell its mRNA Covid vaccine to China after registering a legal entity in the world's second-largest economy. The country has also struggled to develop mRNA technology at home during the pandemic.

Wegovy was approved as an obesity treatment in June 2021 , but Ozempic, a Type 2 diabetes treatment, has been used off-label for weight loss. Mounjaro uses GLP-1 and gastric inhibitory polypeptide, or GIP, to help patients lose weight. Eli Lilly's oral drug, orforglipron, has an even better profile . They also could be helpful in assisting patients in maintaining weight loss after they've used the injectable versions, he said. Some have highlighted that oral drugs also may be more manageable for patients who can't handle the idea of giving themselves a once-a-week injection.

People on diabetes and weight loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk 's Ozempic and Wegovy should stop taking them before having elective surgery to reduce the risk of serious health complications, a prominent group of doctors said. Under the ASA's guidance, people taking GLP-1 drugs on a daily basis should skip treatment on the day of elective surgery. Those taking GLP-1s weekly should stop treatment a week before the scheduled surgery, the group said. Prior to surgery, doctors should consider consulting with an endocrinologist for guidance on patients who take GLP-1s for diabetes. If a patient has none of those symptoms but did not stop using GLP-1s before the surgery, doctors should consider using ultrasound to check if they have a "full stomach."

Patient complaints go beyond the Wegovy shortageKaitlyn's complaints echo an array of issues faced by other Ro patients seeking weight-loss drugs. The patients Insider interviewed asked to be identified by their first names to protect their privacy. In this chat log, a Ro weight-loss patient sends messages to the startup asking to cancel the program. Reitano told Insider that around 90% of Ro patients got a response within 24 hours. "Until these DTC companies generally start getting into the muck of healthcare, they're not going to have a material impact," Parker told Insider.

The company's chief rival, Denmark-based Novo Nordisk (NVO), also published promising data on drugs in its pipeline, including its own oral weight-loss treatment. Other pharmaceutical companies are racing to compete with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, including Amgen (AMGN) and Pfizer (PFE). Barclays on Tuesday projected Eli Lilly's three leading obesity-and-diabetes drugs could generate nearly $49 billion in combined sales in 2030. Eli Lilly Eli Lilly has multiple drugs in development that fall under the GLP-1 umbrella in various stages of clinical development. Novo Nordisk Novo Nordisk currently dominates the market for GLP-1 drugs, with three products in the class on the U.S. market already: Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus.

Drugmakers are jockeying to capitalize on the next major innovation coming to the blockbuster weight loss industry: effective, convenient and potentially affordable obesity pills. But for now, one experimental oral drug from Eli Lilly appears to have an edge over pills from Novo Nordisk and Pfizer — even though it may not win U.S. approval first. Pills are also typically cheaper than injections, though it's unclear if that will be the case with the obesity pills. None of the three drugmakers has provided estimates for how much the new obesity pills would cost. Eli Lilly is still in the middle of phase three clinical trials on its oral drug, orforglipron, meaning it's likely to hit the market later.

What's more, some showed no signs their weight loss was leveling off, suggesting they could continue to shed pounds. (Both use semaglutide, but Ozempic is marketed as a type 2 diabetes treatment, while Wegovy is primarily for weight loss.) Bank of America's Geoff Meacham said retatrutide "exceeded expectations" for weight loss. "This is important, as while the overall 22.4% weight loss was impressive, looking at men and women separately, weight loss was 21.9% and 28.5%, respectively, with the slope in females not yet plateauing. Schott also described the weight loss as "impressive" and said it will likely compare favorably with Novo's next-generation drug CagriSema, which is expected to show weight loss of more than 25% when it releases its next update.

Eli Lilly gorges on obesity options

NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Eli Lilly (LLY.N) has filled its plate with potential obesity treatments, unveiling data from two more on Monday. With so many options under development at Lilly, Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) and others, it raises reasonable questions about capital allocation. Obesity drugs have investors salivating, but is this just more pharmaceutical R&D overkill? Pfizer’s cholesterol-lowering Lipitor, for one, reached consumers after rivals, and a decade after Merck’s version. Lilly’s research budget, projected at 24% of revenue this year, exceeds that of many peers, including Pfizer’s (PFE.N) 19%.

More than 40% of Americans are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and demand is strong for treatments to reduce body weight as well as maintain weight loss. The company said it would continue to develop its twice-daily weight loss drug candidate. Structure Therapeutics (GPCR.O) is developing oral obesity drugs that it says are simpler to manufacture than the current injectables. "We define weight loss quality as the percentage of weight loss attributed to fat loss," said Versanis Chief Scientific Officer Lloyd Klickstein. "With diets, bariatric surgery, incretin drugs or other weight loss drugs, two-thirds to three-quarters of the weight loss is fat, but one-quarter to one-third is lean."

The federal Medicare healthcare program for Americans aged 65 and older cannot cover weight loss treatments by law. Eli Lilly ’s experimental drug helped patients lose up to 24% of their weight after almost a year, the highest reduction seen in the obesity treatment space to date, according to new mid-stage clinical trial results released Monday. The trial's researchers said average weight loss did not appear to plateau after 48 weeks, suggesting a longer study could show even more. Eli Lilly’s other obesity drug Mounjaro, which is approved for type 2 diabetes, has helped patients lose up to 21% of their weight in clinical trials. Novo Nordisk’ s Wegovy, cleared for weight loss, has shown up to 15% weight loss in trials. But Wegovy only mimics one hunger-regulating hormone called GLP-1, while Mounjaro mimics GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said an obesity pill could eventually be a $10-billion-a-year product for Pfizer. Truist Securities analyst Robyn Karnauskas said Lilly is now ahead in the race for a once-a-day obesity pill. Pfizer said last month that danuglipron helped patients lose weight on par with Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) Ozempic in a mid-stage study that tested it in patients with Type 2 diabetes. None of the patients in the lotiglipron trials reported liver-related symptoms or side effects, there was no evidence of liver failure and none required treatment, Pfizer said. Liver enzyme elevations observed in lotiglipron trials have not been seen in patients enrolled in danuglipron trials, the company added.

Novo Nordisk 's high-dose experimental obesity pill helped overweight or obese adults lose around 15% of their body weight, according to new late-stage clinical trial results. Novo Nordisk told Reuters it plans to file for Food and Drug Administration approval of the drug later this year. But the highest dose of Rybelsus is 14 milligrams, while the company's experimental obesity pill has a far larger dose of 50 milligrams. Other companies are also developing oral weight loss treatments to appeal to those who don't want weekly injections. Pfizer is also developing its own weight loss pill, called danuglipron, which patients take twice a day.

Pfizer on Monday said it would stop developing its experimental obesity and diabetes pill, lotiglipron, due to elevated liver enzymes in patients who took the drug once a day in mid-stage clinical studies. New York-based Pfizer said it will instead focus on its other oral obesity drug, danuglipron, which is in a fully enrolled phase two clinical trial. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said that an obesity pill could eventually generate $10 billion each year for the company. The new class of obesity drugs is piquing public interest and causing a weight loss industry gold rush. Analysts believe Eli Lilly’s pill has an edge over Pfizer’s danuglipron.
