A high-ranking F.B.I. agent has provided testimony to the House Judiciary Committee that contradicts a key claim made by an I.R.S. agent who said that political interference had hampered the investigation into the taxes of Hunter Biden, the president’s son, dealing a blow to House Republicans’ wide-ranging inquiry into the Biden administration. The testimony undercut a key claim from Gary Shapley, a veteran I.R.S. agent turned whistle-blower who has accused the Justice Department of giving Mr. Biden preferential treatment.

Mr. Biden has made false or overly simplistic statements about his son’s business dealings, and what he knew about them. Mr. McCarthy’s claim: “President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings.”The facts: It is not clear whether Mr. Biden willfully misrepresented his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings. In 2019, Mr. Biden repeatedly said he had “never discussed” and had “never spoken to” Hunter about his business dealings, and Republicans have produced no evidence that he was ever briefed on specific transactions or deals. House Republicans have uncovered proof that the elder Mr. Biden was aware of and met some of his son’s business partners, raising questions about whether the president’s statements were misleading. In Hunter Biden’s book, he recounted how his father called him after Hunter joined the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma and warned, “I hope you know what you’re doing” — an acknowledgment of at least one conversation apparently unrelated to the details of any business dealings.

But Tuesday’s move was a break with the past and a major change in strategy for Mr. McCarthy, who previously indicated that he believed the full House should vote — as it has in past presidential impeachments — on whether to move forward with an impeachment inquiry. Several Republicans, including those from districts Mr. Biden won, indicated they did not support an impeachment inquiry unless investigators could tie the business dealings of Hunter Biden, the president’s son who engaged in transactions with overseas firms, to his father, or uncover evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. In brief remarks at the Capitol, Mr. McCarthy accused Mr. Biden of lying about his knowledge of his son’s business dealings, and he raised questions about the millions Hunter Biden and other family members made from overseas firms. Mr. McCarthy also accused the Biden administration of giving his son Hunter “special treatment” in a criminal tax investigation against him. “House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,” Mr. McCarthy said.

The Rays have 20 games to go and sit four games back of the first-place Baltimore Orioles in the competitive American League East. "I think everybody is just focused because we need to win and win no matter what," Ramirez said. But if the Mariners continue to falter and frustration continues to build, it could derail some of the success that Seattle has established throughout the season. Rays right-hander Aaron Civale (7-3, 2.76 ERA) is set to make his 20th start of the season. Mariners right-hander Luke Weaver (2-5, 6.71 ERA) likely will receive the bulk of the workload as the bullpen looks to fill nine innings.

London CNN —Rishi Sunak has just under a month to answer the most critical question he faces as British Prime Minister: why does his Conservative Party deserve another five years in power at the next election? They trail the opposition Labour Party in the polls and there is a distinct stench of a party nearing the end of its time in office lingering in the air. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak gives an update on the progress made since he introduced the Illegal Migration Bill, under his plans to "stop the boats," on June 5, 2023 in Dover, England. Unfortunately for the prime minister, his own MPs are divided on even that question. As the UK’s finance minister, Sunak won praise for the financial support he offered people who could not work during lockdowns.

This episode contains descriptions of severe injuries. Last week, a devastating fire swept through a derelict building in Johannesburg that housed desperate families with no place else to go. The authorities had been repeatedly warned that it was a potential firetrap. Nothing was done, and at least 76 people died. Lynsey Chutel, who covers southern Africa for The Times, explains how Johannesburg, once a symbol of the hope of post-apartheid South Africa, became an emblem of just how bad the country’s breakdown has become.

For a man who routinely seeks the spotlight when faced with politically consequential decisions, this is among the most closely watched dilemmas Mr. Manchin has confronted. “I don’t have a clue what he’s going to do, and I don’t think he knows what he’s going to do,” said Phil Smith, the longtime chief lobbyist for the United Mine Workers of America and a close ally of Mr. Manchin’s. In a brief interview in the basement of the Senate this week, Mr. Manchin said he would make a decision about his future by the end of the year. If he intends to run for re-election, he must inform the state by January. “The bottom line is, I’ve been in West Virginia for a long time and moving in the right direction,” he said.

At Musk's 2013 birthday bash, he and Larry Page discussed AI's role in humanity's future, per biographer Walter Isaacson's retelling. Page labeled Musk a "specist," while Musk defended his views as "pro-human." Musk even attempted to stop Google's acquisition of AI company DeepMind, saying Page shouldn't control the future of AI, Isaacson wrote in a Time Magazine report. Per Isaacson, the reason behind the thwarting attempt was Musk's distrust of then-CEO of Google, Larry Page, and his views towards AI. Musk, Page, and Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, sent outside regular business hours.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A police officer was killed and another was seriously injured Wednesday night when their cruiser was struck by a car speeding through a red light while fleeing a traffic stop in Connecticut's capital city, authorities said. Another car that had fled a traffic stop by other officers smashed into the passenger's side of the cruiser just west of downtown Hartford. The driver of the car, Richard Barrington, 18, of Hartford, was treated at a hospital, discharged and arrested, police said. While officers approached the car, Barrington sped away, drove through one red light and went through another red light before crashing into Garten and Kearney's cruiser, he said. The other officers did not chase after Barrington when he fled the traffic stop, the police chief said.

For Europe, energy security has always been a trade-off: Cheap, imported energy comes with the risk of dependency on the countries from which it originates. Europe had an especially mild winter while governments and citizens made a concerted effort to use less gas. Despite these efforts, officials and analysts are fearful that however impressive these advancements have been, Europe’s energy is far from secure in the long term. And when it comes to energy security, dependency ultimately brings us back to that classic trade-off: economics versus risk. China is not the only threat when it comes to energy security in Europe.

Lobsters have long been a staple of the Maine economy, worth roughly $388 million last year alone, but climate change is putting the catch at risk. Now lobstermen and women, along with local entrepreneurs, are turning to a new and potentially even more lucrative staple: Seaweed. Seaweed is also a natural carbon sink, helping the ocean to absorb excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Aquaculture in general, and seaweed in particular, is an essential economic driver for the state of Maine. Atlantic Sea Farms works with 27 lobstermen up and down the coast.

Dozens of campaigners who built substantial audiences during the COVID era by opposing Australia's pandemic response have turned their focus to undermining the Oct. 14 referendum, analysis of social media posts by independent fact-checkers shows. The direct link between COVID agitators and misinformation about the Voice has not been previously reported in detail. Polls show support for the Voice has slumped from about two-thirds in April to less than 40% this month. Not one X post containing electoral misinformation was marked or taken down in the monitoring period, before or after being reported, Reset.Tech said. "Many of the accounts pushing electoral misinformation narratives turned to a style of anti-lockdown politics during the pandemic," said Reset.Tech Australia executive director Alice Dawkins.

CNN —Public schools in France have been turning away students for breaking a new national ban on the abaya, a long, robe-like garment often worn by Muslim women, as a rights group filed an appeal against the prohibition. A total of 67 girls returned home rather than remove their abayas, Education Minister Gabriel Attal told CNN affiliate BFMTV on Tuesday. The ban has its legal foundation in a law passed in 2004 banning the wearing of “conspicuous” religious symbols in schools. “They say that the abaya is a religious dress, but it’s not at all, it’s not a religious dress, it’s a traditional dress, it’s a dress that all girls wear, both veiled and non-veiled, and so it’s a bit of a problem,” she said. The government should reduce the interest rate on federal student loans, and forgive any that's accrued. Half of Americans support forgiving up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, a figure that soars to 83% among those who have student loans. Forgiving all student loan debt still maintains 39% support, a remarkably high figure for a fiscal policy that even a decade ago would have been an utter non-starter politically. Americans owe just south of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. As a result, an equitable solution is this: retroactively adjust the interest rate on federal student loans to be at or near zero.

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about the third episode of “Ahsoka,” “Time to Fly.”CNN —After a somewhat sluggish start, “Ahsoka” felt much more on target as its third episode continued to draw upon “Star Wars Rebels” lore while mixing in abundant action and paying its respects to the original trilogy. The interactions between Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), in particular, echoed the early training of Luke Skywalker by Obi-Wan Kenobi, and offered a reminder that the past and future of “Star Wars” run straight through the Jedi order. For her part, Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) was left to grapple with the myopia of the New Republic leadership to the lingering imperial threat. Whatever the numbers, “Ahsoka” now feels as if it’s more solidly building toward its larger narrative at a brisker pace. Keep doing that, and the ratings – however you choose to measure them – should take care of themselves.

Facing the prospect of a politically damaging government shutdown within weeks, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is offering a new argument to conservatives reluctant to vote to keep funding flowing: A shutdown would make it more difficult for Republicans to pursue an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, or to push forward with investigations of him and his family that could yield evidence for one. Mr. McCarthy first made the case on Sunday during an interview on Fox News in which he warned that a shutdown would stall the House’s ongoing inquiries into the president and his family. His argument reflected the speaker’s growing desperation to find a way to persuade right-wing Republicans to drop their opposition to a stopgap measure that is needed to keep federal money flowing beyond the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year. “If we shut down, all the government shuts it down — investigation and everything else,” Mr. McCarthy said about the prospect of funding running out Sept. 30. “It hurts the American public.”
