The tech giant has revived employee perks in an attempt to boost staff morale, reports Bloomberg. Company merch, happy hours, and snack bars all saw cuts during Mark Zuckerberg's "year of efficiency." But Meta is now bringing them back as it tells staff to come into the office at least three days a week. A Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg that while the company was bringing back some perks, "Dinner, happy hour and company swag never really went away, merely adjusted given the pandemic and budgets." The revived perks, which also include a new coffee bar and earlier dinners, are part of Meta's renewed effort to lure staff back into the office.

BP names Kate Thomson as interim CFO in post-Looney reshuffle
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
The International Energy Agency recently reported that 2021 saw energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rise to their highest level in history. BP on Tuesday appointed Kate Thomson as interim chief financial officer to take the place of Murray Auchincloss who became interim CEO last week. The reshuffle follows the abrupt departure of CEO Bernard Looney last week after he did not fully disclose past relationships with colleagues. Thomson, who joined BP nearly 20 years ago, previously headed the finances of the energy giant's oil and gas production and operations division. Auchincloss, 52, worked closely with Looney in devising BP's energy transition strategy and has advocated a focus on high-return assets to finance the transition, according to two company sources.

In an uncertain market environment, Morgan Stanley thinks investors can regain confidence with some large-cap defensive stocks. All are members of the top 1000 by market cap universe, have outperformed on a year-to-date basis, and are classified as a growth stock based on Morgan Stanley's proprietary factor classification model. "In our view, the best way to express that in a portfolio is to hold a barbell of defensive growth (select growth stories and more traditional defensive sectors like Healthcare and Consumer Staples) with late-cycle cyclicals (Industrials and Energy)." Here are some names from Morgan Stanley's playbook: McDonald's is a sure defensive play, according to the firm. Still, Morgan Stanley analysts view the burger chain as a growth stock that is set to outperform in the coming months.

This week's government economic data revealed pockets of durable consumer spending despite sticky inflation, signaling a favorable quarter ahead and further upside for two of our retail stocks. Since Amazon is the largest e-commerce retailer, the government data suggests Amazon sales in the third quarter should be positive sequentially. Case for Costco Strong August retail sales numbers also bode well for Costco which essentially sells most items listed in the government's dataset. According to Jim, Costco has been doing so well because "the consumer seems very intrigued by bargains," as they've dealt with high inflation for over a year. For August, Costco said U.S. sales rose 2.8% from a year ago, slightly edging out the year-over-year, inflation-adjusted 2.5% gain in U.S. retail sales overall, reported by the Commerce Department.

Insider Today: Big Tech goes on trial

Speaking of Big Tech, it's a big day for the industry as the DOJ's antitrust trial against Google starts today. It's also a strategy the Department of Justice argues is "anticompetitive and exclusionary" in a landmark trial for Big Tech kicking off today. The trial is the biggest to hit the tech industry since the government sued Microsoft in the late 1990s. AdvertisementAdvertisementMore broadly, the case is a bellwether for how the government could argue future cases against Big Tech companies in the modern era. Each case is unique, but their focus on monopolistic behavior means the Google trial could set precedents followed by both sides.
