Russia faces losing all its ships if it continues to strike Ukraine's ports, President Zelenskyy said. The attacks have killed civilians, but in recent weeks Ukraine has hit back with sea drones. Zelenskyy's comments were published days after Ukrainian exploding sea drones struck a Russian oil tanker and a Russian warship. Since then, Russia has ramped up its attacks on Ukrainian ports, killing some civilians and making one strike just a few hundred yards from the border with Romania, a NATO member. Ukraine made a similar declaration about ships traveling to Russian-controlled ports, and in the interview published Sunday, Zelenskyy vowed to respond to any attacks on Ukraine's civilian populations.

The IAEA said Friday it found no evidence of explosives on the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. Ukraine has repeatedly expressed fears over the nuclear facility, suggesting that Russia might stage a nuclear disaster, similar to the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in June. However, he said IAEA inspectors were reminded of the risks facing the plant, which Russia occupied soon after its February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On the night before they were provided access to the roof of the plant, IAEA experts reported hearing a "series of detonations in the vicinity of the plant." Grossi said the detonations serve as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by the military occupation of the facility.

Russia's strong defensive lines in Ukraine are getting some help thanks to regrowing weeds. British intelligence said the regrowth of weeds and shrubs are providing extra cover for troops. It "helps camouflage Russian defensive positions and makes mine fields harder to clear," UK intel said. Russia's tough defenses along a 600-mile front line include mazes of extensive trenches, barbed wire, land mines, and anti-tank ditches. Retired Australian general Mick Ryan recently described the defensive lines that Russia had built in Ukraine as "much more complex and deadly than anything experienced by any military in nearly 80 years."

The phrase "whatever it takes" has become a mantra often repeated at public gatherings of allies assessing the war and the military needs of Ukraine. Most recently, tensions have emerged over Ukraine's military strategy and demands on NATO. And by threatening to boycott the summit, Zelenskyy had played a risky strategy, Shea noted, potentially setting the meeting up for failure. The key thing is to manage that [discrepancy] and prevent it doing lasting damage, and I think the Vilnius summit at least managed to prevent it doing lasting damage." Ukraine's military strategy — and the symbolic value it has put on fighting for every piece of Ukrainian territory — has sometimes collided with its allies' military perspective and pragmatism.

Much of Russia's unprovoked war against its neighbor has been concentrated in Ukraine, but recently Ukraine has been bringing the fight to Russia's capital. According to the Times, Ukraine recently made an abnormal admission that it had orchestrated previous drone attacks, citing information from a senior official in Ukraine. Though he did not claim responsibility for the most recent drone strike in his Sunday address, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was moving the war back into Russian territory. As attacks against Russia have increased, Russian feelings of security, high during the early months of the war entirely in Ukraine, have lessened. However, the drone attacks against Russia have not been as impactful as those Russia fires against Ukraine, which have often targeted civilian-heavy areas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday praised his country's close friendship with North Korea and vowed to step up economic, political and security ties with the isolated state in a letter shared with President Kim Jong Un as Russian and Chinese delegates gathered in Pyongyang for Korean War Armistice celebrations. An unclassified U.S. intelligence report released Thursday pointed to increase in China's economic support for Russia as it seeks to mitigate the effect of Western sanctions. The assessment by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said that China has "become an even more critical economic partner for Russia since the invasion of Ukraine" and that it is "pursuing a variety of economic support mechanisms for Russia that mitigate both the impact of Western sanctions and export controls."
