BOJ launches forum with 60 firms on digital yen pilot programme
  + stars: | 2023-07-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
TOKYO, July 20 (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan on Thursday kicked off a series of discussions with 60 companies on a pilot programme for developing a digital yen, joining peers around the globe ramping up efforts towards issuing digital versions of their currencies for retail use. The discussions will touch on various themes including the business and technological features of retail settlements using a central bank digital currency (CBDC), the central bank said in a statement. The BOJ has said no decision has been made yet on whether Japan will actually issue a digital yen, which must be made by the government and parliament. But many big Japanese companies were included in the list of 60 firms selected to join the discussions, a sign Japan is moving steadily toward such a launch. Central banks around the globe have been studying and working on digital versions of their currencies for retail use to avoid leaving digital payments to the private sector amid an accelerating decline in the use of cash.

When it comes to Tesla stock, the only reason to buy has nothing to do with its electric vehicle business. But according to a Wednesday note from DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas, there's only one reason to buy Tesla stock at its current levels, and it has nothing to do with its EV business. The car industry is difficult to compete in, as evidenced by the current stock prices of legacy automakers, he observed. So when it comes to Tesla stock, don't just look at its EV sales, according to Colas. The remaining $200 billion to $300 billion of Tesla's current market valuation is assigned to the company's EV business, which is comparable to Toyota's current market valuation.

Britain upgrades to also-ran in EV battery race

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is joining the global arms race to secure future industries, but he has a long way to go. Europe may have 25 so-called gigafactories, vast plants that turn raw materials such as lithium into battery packs, by 2025. While both Theresa May and Boris Johnson tried, they failed to win over big global players like Tesla (TSLA.O), Samsung or Northvolt, which preferred European sites. The UK leader can at least now claim he can attract global players. But Tata’s 40 GWh of new capacity brings Britain’s total to just over 50 GWh by 2026, after factoring in the plant operated by China’s Envision in Sunderland.

Ford’s River Rouge plant, then the world’s largest factory, ultimately inspired facilities by Renault, Volkswagen, Toyota and the Russian automaker Gaz. China learned to master the solar, battery and electric vehicle industries through the 2010s, while the United States was debating whether to pass clean-energy policy — and even whether climate change existed at all. With the Inflation Reduction Act, the United States now has an opportunity to become more competitive, and nothing gets lawmakers from across the political spectrum pumped up faster than the prospect of crushing China. But the United States cannot build a competitive renewable or electric vehicle industry from scratch. The history of innovation — and of the modern world, frankly — shows that American engineers will progress in these industries only when they can work with their Chinese counterparts.

That's approximately how large China's "premium" consumer population is – and it's a "huge" opportunity for higher-end sportswear by foreign companies, according to Bernstein. By U.S. standards, it doesn't take much to be considered premium in China. Adidas and Nike are like Benz, BMW, the highest end, he said, while the other brands are like Audi or Toyota. For Nike and Adidas, even their lowest price is two times that of local competitors, the Bernstein analysts said. However, focusing only on the premium growth segment can overlook the fact that many of China's consumers still live in smaller cities.

TOKYO, July 14 (Reuters) - Japan's Mazda Motor (7261.T) needs to overhaul its strategy in China, the world's biggest auto market, where it faces increasingly tough competition from domestic players, the automaker's chief executive said on Friday. CEO Masahiro Moro said business conditions for Mazda in China, where it has a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile (000625.SZ) and China FAW, would become increasingly tough over the coming year to 18 months. Its sales in China peaked in 2016 at just over 316,000 vehicles, separate industry data showed. Mazda is not alone in finding the Chinese market increasingly tough. Looking beyond China, Moro said if Mazda were to begin EV production in North America, it would happen after 2027, which marks the end of the middle phase of its business plan for this decade.

Opinion | A Climate Hawk’s Issues With Electric Vehicles
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I get why the Biden administration is pushing electric vehicles so hard. To stop the planet from overheating, we’ll eventually need motor vehicles to produce zero greenhouse gas emissions, and only fully electric vehicles can do that. Hybrids, which have combustion engines along with electric motors, will always puff some carbon dioxide (and other bad stuff) out of their tailpipes. By Toyota’s calculation, the amount of rocks needed for one long-range electric vehicle would be enough for either six plug-in hybrids or 90 of the type of hybrid that can’t be plugged in for a recharge. “The overall carbon reduction of those 90 hybrids over their lifetimes is 37 times as much as a single battery electric vehicle,” Toyota argues.

Rising inventories and price-cutting could represent only a short-term pause in EV market growth. If production of EVs continues to outpace demand, automakers will have to choose between slashing prices and profit margins, or slowing assembly lines. More than 90 new EV models are expected to hit the U.S. market through 2026, according to AutoForecast Solutions. In a statement, Volkswagen's U.S. sales arm said "we have seen some softening in EV sales in the U.S. recently" as supply chain bottlenecks have eased, allowing for increased production. Wakefield said it is too soon to declare that U.S. EV demand has hit a plateau.

The Environmental Protection Agency in April proposed new 2027-2032 vehicle standards that would be the most dramatic reductions in history. The EPA estimates that to meet the new standards, automakers would need to have 60% of new production be electric vehicles by 2030 and 67% by 2032. The rules would cut emissions by 56% from existing 2026 requirements to speed the transition away from gasoline-powered engines to electric vehicles. Democratic attorneys general from New York, California, Pennsylvania, Illinois and other states said the EPA should go further. He said CATL would be able to mass produce a battery capable of delivering 400 kilometers of driving range with a 10-minute charge this year. The company aims to shorten that charge time to five to seven minutes for the same driving range as its next target, he said. Automakers and some suppliers have been racing to develop solid-state batteries that would offer greater power and increased driving range. Toyota (7203.T) said last month it had overcome an issue with the durability of solid-state batteries that would pave the way for production as soon as 2027. Wu said he was skeptical that solid-state batteries were ready for mass production and of the cost reduction claims.

Ford auto sales rise on robust demand, improved supply
  + stars: | 2023-07-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
July 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) on Thursday followed rivals in reporting a rise in second-quarter U.S. auto sales, driven by easing supply chain snags and pent-up demand for personal transportation. Industry-wide U.S. new vehicle sales in June were 1.37 million units, with an annual sales rate of about 15.7 million, according to data released by Wards Intelligence on Wednesday. Ford's quarter was powered by a 26% jump in truck sales, one of the company's main profit drivers. Sales of the electric version of the company's popular F-150 truck more than doubled to 4,466 vehicles from last year. However, Ford's overall EV sales fell 2.8% to 14,843 vehicles amid lingering supply snags.
