Interest rates are at a 22-year high after the Fed last March began its punishing pace of hikes in a bid to tame wayward inflation. Sephora locked up the fragrances and added more staff specifically tasked with stopping theft. “To minimize the threats of retail theft and to provide our shoppers with the peace of mind during their experience at Sephora, we’ve increased the presence of Sephora loss prevention investigators across all stores. “The ultimate victim of retail crime is 100% the consumer,” said Landon Winkelvoss, co-founder of Nisos, a provider of threat intelligence to companies and organizations. “Sephora freed the products and put them straight into consumers hands so they could touch, swatch and experience the products at their leisure,” she added.

In adopting these rules, the Supreme Court didn’t address that issue at all. Congress controls when and where the court sits; until 1935, the court sat in the Capitol — a powerful reminder of which branch was beholden to which. But it’s the least-worst alternative to a problem that the Constitution necessarily creates: how to have an independent Supreme Court that is nevertheless at least loosely accountable to the political branches. Accountability and independence aren’t mutually exclusive — something the justices are tacitly conceding by agreeing for the first time to formally adopt a code of conduct.

Consumers’ expectations for inflation one year and five years from now both dropped 0.1 percentage points from the month before, to land at 3.6% and 2.7%, respectively. However, median inflation expectations at the three-year horizon remained unchanged at 3%, a yearly high. On Friday, the University of Michigan’s closely watched consumer survey showed sentiment was waning about the current economic state and that inflation expectations ticked up over the long run. The median expected growth in household income ticked up a tenth of a percentage point to 3.1%. Overall, more respondents to the New York Fed survey said their households were better off than they were this time last year.
