July 21 (Reuters) - Shares in Sirius XM Holdings (SIRI.O) were down 10.5% on Friday, erasing some of their dramatic gains in the previous day's session with analysts attributing the volatility to a short squeeze, as well as a rebalance of the Nasdaq 100 (.NDX). U.S. satellite and online radio company, Sirius XM, which is majority owned by Liberty Media (FWONA.O), last traded at $6.99 after closing up 42% at $7.81 on Thursday for its biggest one-day percentage gain since March 2009. A short squeeze is when these investors are forced to quickly cover their bets to limit losses if a stock gains ground instead of falling. "However, the large number of shares held short along with a relatively small float provided fertile ground for a short squeeze as seen on July 20," wrote Macker who estimates a $7.50 fair value for the stock. Evercore analyst Vijay Jayant said the upcoming rebalance of the Nasdaq 100, of which Sirius is a member, was also a factor for the short squeeze as well as related options trading.

Anson Dorrance knew he was a pioneer during his eight years as head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). Any understanding of how and why the USWNT is women’s soccer’s dominant force, a four-time Women’s World Cup winner and favorite to win the next edition currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, must start with Dorrance, the groundbreaker and the bricklayer. Five years later, the first Women’s World Cup was held in China – not that it was initially labelled a World Cup as world governing body FIFA worried it might not be a success. A third-placed finish followed at the 1995 Women’s World Cup, and then came the Atlanta Olympics a year later. The success of 1999 would lead to the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA).

Data center development is booming and AI is expected to stoke already growing demand. Demand is sapping power grids in major markets and pushing data center development across the US. The project's neighbors include Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon – all of whom have similar plans, or are already underway with major data center projects. The message came after a torrid period of growth by the data center industry in that region. Wes Swenson, Nova's CEO, said the Reno region was becoming increasingly popular for data center development because of its access to power.

These are the three signs that suggest the economy's strength means it doesn't have to worry about sticking the landing. "Not only do we see no sign of recession, but it also doesn't even look like the economy is looking for a 'landing' at this point," Varghese said. Looking at the last three months of economic data, Varghese highlighted three data points that suggest the economy is likely to remain stronger than many expect and ultimately avoid a recession. Retail sales rose at an annualized pace of 4.7% in the second-quarter, and retail sales excluding vehicle and gas station sales rose at a 6.3% annual pace. Taken altogether, the data suggests to Varghese that the US economic growth reaccelerated over the past year.

"Early on in my career, I wanted to prove how smart I was and so I did a lot more talking than listening," Cuban said. At the time, Cuban says he was sleeping on the floor of a three-bedroom apartment with six roommates in Dallas. The desire to prove himself sometimes led Cuban to be "too cocky," he says, which could rub people the wrong way. British inflation data due at 0600 GMT is the next major calendar item and traders are expecting a fall to a still-uncomfortable 8.2% annual pace. Usually around 1.75 percentage points, and as low as 1.3 in 2021, the so-called mortgage spread is hovering at more than 3 percentage points now. And that is propping up mortgage rates, keeping home owners from selling their homes and buying nicer ones, and hurting first-time buyers, Yun said. Why mortgage spreads should move lowerLogically, mortgage spreads should move down sharply from here, thanks to the recent spate of good economic news, and bring relief to home buyers who have seen affordability deteriorate sharply since 2020. But as the Fed began raising interest rates in March 2022, mortgage rates rose even faster than bond yields. Mortgage rates also dropped, to 6.89% last Friday from a recent peak of 7.22%, according to Mortgage News Daily.

Former President Donald Trump asked two courts in Georgia to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from investigating him and quash the special grand jury report that recommended criminal charges in Willis' 2020 election interference probe. The requests came in court documents filed overnight in Georgia Supreme Court and Fulton County Superior Court. These newly seated grand juries are separate from the special purpose grand jury which heard evidence and testimony from dozens of witnesses last year. That grand jury submitted a final report, most of which remained under seal as of Friday. The special grand jury did not have the power to indict, and Willis was not required to follow its recommendations.

Delta Air Lines posted its highest quarterly revenue and earnings ever thanks to scorching travel demand that has defied fears of an economic slowdown for months. CEO Ed Bastian said he expects consumers' desire for travel will fuel bookings for years, calling the current period the "mid-innings" of travel growth. In the third quarter, Delta expects to earn $2.20 to $2.50 a share, above analysts' expectations, on a 16% increase in capacity. Adjusted Revenue: $14.61 billion vs. $14.49 billion expected.

Washington, DC CNN —Florida is America’s inflation hotspot, thanks to a persistent problem with sky-high housing costs. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area has the highest inflation rate of metro areas with more than 2.5 million residents, with a 9% inflation rate for the 12 months ended in April. Urban Hawaii had the second lowest inflation rate at 2% — mirroring the Federal Reserve’s target for its preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index. A vexing inflation problem in the Sunshine StateIn Florida, the state’s growing population has been pushing up inflation — particularly via housing costs. Even though the Twin Cities’ inflation rate is currently the lowest among major cities, it might not feel that way to residents, Schipper said.

New York CNN —A group of American fashion influencers and creators has received online backlash after they visited a model factory in China as part of a tour sponsored by Shein, an internet shopping giant, and posted glowing reviews. Kenya Freeman, a designer who has sold clothing on Shein, traveled to China and Singapore, where Shein is now based, as part of the junket and shared videos on her Instagram account. In a statement, Shein said the social media videos posted by the influencers were authentic. But its meteoric rise has come with scrutiny, especially as relations between the United States and China have deteriorated. In April, a US congressional commission said Shein, online superstore Temu and others in China were potentially linked to the use of forced labor, exploitation of trade loopholes, product safety hazards or intellectual property theft.

The goods trade deficit decreased 6.1% to $91.1 billion last month, leaving the bulk of April's surge intact. The drop was led by a 7.3% plunge in consumer goods imports. The report also showed that retail inventories increased 0.8% last month after gaining 0.3% in April. Excluding motor vehicles, retail inventories were unchanged after decreasing 0.3% in April.

A Reuters journalist explores his ancestors’ ties to slavery

CHICAGO, June 27 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) said on Tuesday it expects full-year profit per share at the high-end of its prior forecast on sustained travel demand. Shares rose about 1% in premarket trading as the Atlanta-based carrier also lifted its expectation for annual free cash flow ahead of its investor day. But with no let-up in travel demand, mainly for overseas trips and a moderation in fuel costs, analysts have revised upwards Delta's profit estimates. In a sign of growing confidence in its ability to generate free cash flow, Delta this month reinstated its quarterly dividend, which it had suspended in March 2020 during the pandemic. The company raised its free cash flow outlook for 2023 to $3 billion compared to more than $2 billion that it had forecast earlier.
