The GOP-led House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas Wednesday for three White House aides, requesting depositions to discuss President Joe Biden's cognitive state. The subpoenas, first reported by Axios, are for first lady Jill Biden's senior adviser Anthony Bernal, White House deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and White House senior adviser Ashley Williams. "President Biden is clearly unfit for office, yet his staff are trying to hide the truth from the American people," he added. When reached for comment, White House spokesperson Ian Sams criticized Comer and called the subpoenas a "baseless political stunt intended for him to get media attention instead of engage in legitimate oversight." The three aides were previously asked to appear before the committee as part of the Biden classified documents investigation, but the committee says the White House blocked their appearances.

This week, the 28-year-old venture capital firm debuted a new pair of funds totaling $2.3 billion, a substantial sum during an abysmal time for the industry's fundraising efforts. The European-born firm is structured in a way that investors across continents invest out of the same funds. The new funds include $800 million to invest at the early stage and $1.5 billion to invest in growth. Those figures are slightly down from the firm's last fundraise, when it collected $900 million for an early-stage fund and $2 billion for a growth fund. That year, Index saw seven portfolio companies go public at a market cap of more than $1 billion, including Roblox and Robinhood.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday sharply criticized pharmacy benefit managers, saying in a scathing 71-page report that “these powerful middlemen may be profiting by inflating drug costs and squeezing Main Street pharmacies.”The regulator’s study signals a significant ramping up of its scrutiny of benefit managers under the agency’s chair, Lina Khan. It represents a remarkable turnabout for an agency that has long taken a hands-off approach to policing these companies. has so far stopped short of bringing a lawsuit or other enforcement action against a benefit manager. But the industry fears that the report could lead to a formal investigation into its practices or to a lawsuit accusing benefit managers of anticompetitive conduct. The agency’s findings could also fuel legislative efforts in Congress and in the states to impose limits on the industry.

In today's big story, we're looking at how new AI tools are helping workers bluff their way through interviews . Some people have built homemade AI tools to help interviewees, releasing them online for free. A startup developing AI-powered tools for job seekers, Final Round AI offers an AI résumé builder, a cover letter writing service, and a mock interview tool. He's not the only one looking to AI to change the interview process. Others say banning AI chatbots in interviews is like prohibiting calculators during math tests — if workers can use the tech in their jobs, why not in the interview process, too?

President Joe Biden arrives to speak to supporters and volunteers during a campaign stop at a Biden-Harris campaign election office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 7, 2024. President Joe Biden defended his place at the top of the Democratic ticket Monday in a surprise television interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," after more lawmakers and donors came forward over the weekend with concerns about his reelection bid. "I'm getting so frustrated by the elites in the party" calling on him to step down, the president fumed. Biden insisted to hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the concerns of his wealthy backers would not dictate his political future. "I want their support, but that's not the reason I'm running," Biden said.

To the Editor:Re “How to Party (Without Regrets)” (Sunday Styles, June 23):If I were to take most of the advice in this article, I might actually leave a party with many regrets. The art of gathering should be focused on being together (as you are, without a rigid set of prescriptive rules to follow) and forging genuine connections. In a world with a never-ending list of to-dos, I feel grateful most days just to break bread with those I love, however they may like to dress or however early they may need to leave (e.g., to relieve a sitter, to go on call for night shift at a hospital). In order to find your kindred spirits, you do not need a guide on how to be performative and how to assimilate in order to “fit in.”I was particularly rankled by Rebecca Gardner’s contribution: “Please don’t ask people to take off their shoes when entering your apartment. It’s rude.”

He's done little to turn things around since and appears to be in denial over the damage done to his campaign. AdvertisementThat's the story of a critical 10-day period in the US presidential race, which kicked off with Biden's historically bad debate performance. Biden's poor performance led to a Democrat freak out and growing calls for Biden to step aside. Neither sentiment is likely to satisfy the many Democrats who have serious concerns about Biden's mental acuity and electability.

Two Democrats with a powerful network of friends are circulating a proposal for President Joe Biden to bow out of the 2024 race and launch an expedited Democratic primary to choose a new nominee before the August convention. The proposal comes as pressure builds on Biden to exit the race following his stumbling debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump. "Overnight, Biden is hailed as a modern-day George Washington, not an octogenarian clinging to power with a 37% approval rating," the proposal reads. The next phase of the plan is a "blitz primary," where prospective Democratic candidates submit their bids and delegates of the Democratic National Convention ultimately narrow down the list to six contenders. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposal.
