Maura Healey of Massachusetts, a liberal Democrat, has declared a state of emergency, activated the National Guard and started petitioning the White House for help. The migrants on state-funded buses from Texas are a fraction of the total number arriving in northern cities. Some of those migrants have family in New York, while others are attracted to the city’s history of welcoming immigrants. Still, the rising clamor is creating a rare convergence between the two parties, which for years have fought in seemingly parallel political universes. Endless Republican news conferences at the border and threats to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, were dismissed as political bluster.

CNN —The nominee to be the US military’s most senior general warned US airmen in a letter this week that the Chinese military wants “to exploit your knowledge and skill to fill gaps in their military capability.”Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Concerns over western pilots training China’s military has grown in recent years, as Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand – all members of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing alliance, which includes the US – have taken steps to prevent former military pilots from offering their expertise to Beijing. Last October, the UK Ministry of Defense said it believed up to 30 former British military pilots were providing training in China and that many others have been approached, including pilots who were still serving. He has denied the allegations, saying he was only training Chinese civilian pilots seeking to improve their skills. And recently, two Navy sailors were arrested and indicted for allegedly sending classified information to Chinese intelligence officers.

Sasse’s words sometimes tumble out in a kind of techno-futurist patois that can be hard to follow. In response to a question about his perceived invisibility on campus, he veered off into something about the future of pedagogy. Later, he added, “What will today’s generic term ‘professor’ mean when you disaggregate syllabus designer, sage-on-the-stage lecturer, seminar leader, instructional technologist, grader, assessor, etc. ?”Sasse is not the first politician to lead a big public university. Putin held a Q&A with hand-picked Russian students at the start of the new school semester. The session didn't mention the Ukraine war, but included several pupils from the occupied territories. It comes as Russia overhauls its curriculum to include rifle training and the history of the conflict. The showcase lesson appears to be part of another effort to naturalize Russia's claims to Ukrainian territories, and the war more broadly, to Russians. How Do I Get Rid of Toenail Fungus?

Q: It looks like I have fungus beneath my toenail, but how can I be sure? Does toenail fungus go away on its own? Experts say these infections don’t go away on their own and can easily spread from person to person without treatment. “Fungus tends to be greedy,” said Dr. Boni Elewski, chair of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Toenail fungus affects an estimated one in 10 people worldwide, and becomes more common with age — afflicting more than half of those ages 70 and up.

Excerpts from recent editorials in the United States and abroad:Aug. 31The Washington Post on sexism in the U.S. militaryNearly eight years ago, the United States opened up all military combat roles to women, clearing a pathway for female service members to join the most elite military forces. Women at multiple military bases reported that other soldiers would bang on their doors in the middle of the night. Even a program that once represented the highest ideals of the United States — its compassion, its expertise and its resources — is becoming a casualty of the country’s most destructive and divisive forces. Lack of adequate cooling during hot summers has plagued Southern states for decades, but climate change has now made it a problem in Northern states as well — Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Indiana. Washington CNN —The three US military service secretaries went on the offensive against Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville over his ongoing hold on senior military nominations in an interview with CNN on Tuesday, saying he is aiding communist and autocratic regimes, and being used by adversaries like China against the US. “That is what the American people truly need to understand.”“It is just unprecedented to be attacking apolitical general officers and flag officers in this way. But placing a blanket hold on all general and flag officer nominees, who as apolitical officials have traditionally been exempt from the hold process, is unfair to these military leaders and their families. It is time to lift this dangerous hold and confirm our senior military leaders.”“Chuck Schumer could confirm all of the service chiefs in one day—but he refuses. While not specifically mentioned, there have been a number of theories about McConnell freezing up during recent news conferences. To have an equitable distribution across the work force, 22 percent of Black workers with a college degree would have to switch occupations with white college graduates. For workers who graduated with a high school degree but lack a college degree, nearly 28 percent of either Black or white workers would have to switch jobs. The researchers called this a “dissimilarity index,” and since 2000 it has ticked up slightly for both groups. The new report notes that Black college students often major in fields that have lower wages. But the dearth of Black students in majors that lead to higher pay in careers like technology or finance, the researchers say, is a legacy of racism.

The laundry machines are in the basement, which is a common area. The problem is that the basement is stuffed with junk — which I was willing to put up with, but now I’ve seen a rat nosing around. But even though the law is on your side, getting landlords and management companies to respond isn’t always easy. Start with a letter to your landlord and management company describing the conditions in the basement and the problems the junk creates. Keep copies of your letter, as well as any response that you receive, and take photos documenting the problem.

So it’s [expletive] that people are trying to demonize drag queens as groomers and pedophiles and something that’s wrong.

A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked a new Texas law that would restrict drag shows, a victory for L.G.B.T.Q. groups that have criticized the measure as an attack against drag performers and organizers. If a permanent injunction is granted, the ruling would most likely be appealed by the state. 12, which was set to go into effect on Friday, seeks to “regulate sexually oriented performances,” which has been widely understood to mean drag shows, and to restrict those performances in front of minors. Under a 2014 law, anyone entering a same-sex marriage or civil union in Nigeria can be imprisoned for up to 14 years. Those who administer or witness such a ceremony can face up to 10 years in prison. At the time it was enacted, the U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry, said the law violated basic human rights protections. Now, though, generative AI and large language models are changing the mission of web crawlers radically and rapidly. Without a supply of potential consumers, there's little incentive for content creators to let web crawlers continue to suck up free data online. It's also open to manipulation, especially given the voracious appetite for quality AI data. Because robots.txt is voluntary, web crawlers can also simply ignore the blocking instructions and siphon the information from a site anyway.
