Many communities in south Louisiana rely on the Mississippi’s fresh water, with their water intake treatment facilities located along the river. Unimpeded salt water continues to creep upriver and threatens municipal drinking water. Edwards warns that other parishes may soon be affected by the salt water, including Orleans, St. Bernard and Jefferson. Instead, residents will be notified in advance if salt water will affect their area. And not just in Louisiana, but further north to strengthen the river’s flow,WILL THE SALT WATER AFFECT OTHER THINGS?

Drought-like conditions in the Midwest over the summer have created a growing water problem in the New Orleans area this fall. Water levels of the Mississippi River have dropped low enough to make the river less resistant to a mass of saltwater flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico. This circumstance, known as saltwater intrusion, is endangering the drinking water systems in and around the city, as well as smaller municipalities to the south. Many water treatment facilities cannot handle water with high salinity levels, which corrode pipes and cause metals in the pipes to leach into the water. He said he was requesting a federal emergency declaration, and Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans signed an emergency declaration for the city on Friday.

Medicaid, the federal and state health insurance program for the poor, requires states to provide dental coverage for children but not adults. While dental care often is seen as routine, the poor often go without any care for years or even decades. In New Hampshire, the state is spending $33.4 million over 12 months to provide dental care to its 88,000 Medicaid recipients. Andy Beshear pressed ahead with emergency regulations ensuring that about 900,000 Kentuckians would continue having access to dental care after the Republican-led legislature rejected his proposal. A mother of five, she figured dental care would take away from spending on her children.

There has been a dramatic increase in reports of child labor — and workplace accidents involving kids. Overall, the Department of Labor said it had seen a 69% increase in illegal child labor over the previous five years. On Saturday, Seema Nanda, the US solicitor of labor, said she is examining whether companies can be held liable for contractors' labor practices. "We are long past the day when brands can say that they don't know that they have child labor in their supply chain," Nanda told the Times. It has also begun a third-party audit of its child labor policies, the spokesperson said.

Smith's lawyers have said the untested protocol may violate the U.S. Constitution's ban on "cruel and unusual punishments." They are due to file their opposition to the attorney general's death warrant application with the court on Friday. Oklahoma and Mississippi have also approved nitrogen asphyxiation executions, but are yet to try the method.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A U.S. agency said Friday it will nominate the vast, federally protected wildlife refuge in the Okefenokee Swamp for listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Okefenokee refuge covers more than 90% of the swamp and is the largest national wildlife refuge east of the Mississippi River. Designation as a World Heritage site wouldn't impose any added restrictions or regulations for the Okefenokee. Ossoff said a World Heritage site designation would have both environmental and economic benefits for the Okefenokee and surrounding Georgia communities. Conservationists sounded doubtful that the World Heritage site nomination would directly affect the decisions of Georgia regulators.

All three states lean heavily Republican in federal elections, yet Democrats currently control the governorship in two out of the three. As usual, we are rating these races on the following scale: Safe Republican, Likely Republican, Lean Republican, Toss-Up, Lean Democratic, Likely Democratic and Safe Democratic. The race moving in the Republican direction is Louisiana, which we’re shifting from Likely Republican to Safe Republican. But for now, we’ll keep it at Likely Republican. That may be in tune with Kentucky voters, who, despite the state’s Republican lean, rejected a 2022 ballot measure that would have enhanced the state’s ability to outlaw abortion.

Last month was the planet’s warmest August in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 174-year record, agency officials said on Thursday. The global surface temperature for the month was 2.25 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.25 degrees Celsius, above the 20th century average. July and June were also the warmest on record globally, and global surface sea temperatures hit a record high for the fifth month in a row. In the United States, this August was the ninth-warmest on record. But Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi were especially hot, with all three states experiencing their warmest August ever.

The outcry was swift, with 46 Republican senators signing on to a letter condemning the shift. “Allowing casual clothing on the Senate floor disrespects the institution we serve and the American families we represent,” they wrote. But even though the Senate prides itself on a tradition of decorum, expectations of dress in the chamber have been largely governed by norms, rather than by written rules. That flexibility has allowed for notable deviations from the buttoned-up status quo throughout the years. (Seersucker Thursday was also a reminder, according to Mr. Lott, that “the Senate isn’t just a bunch of dour folks wearing dark suits.”)

The Operation Threshold office building was inundated. In the aftermath of the flooding, Grant said the plethora of paper documents in the office wouldn't dry enough to shred. (AP) — A federal appeals court has overturned a lower court ruling that found Mississippi relies too much on institutionalizing people with mental health conditions rather than providing care in their communities. The appeals court judges also wrote that a remedial order by U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, which sought to make changes in Mississippi's mental health system, "vastly exceeds the scope of claimed liability.”Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch's office argued that the appeals court should overturn the district judge's ruling. The New Red Order named themselves after the Improved Order of Red Men, a largely white fraternal organization fond of Native regalia. It’s easy to mock grown men playing Indigenous dress-up, but the New Red Order see something deeper: the way American national identity has defined itself in terms of an idealized Native authenticity and freedom. “Even Indians play Indian. Indian people want to appear to be more traditionally Native American.”Over the past five years, Indigenous artists have gained global prominence. Land acknowledgments, which name specific tribes forced to leave an area, may seem to be a kind of progress — but the New Red Order say visibility is not the end, and could even hurt Indigenous artists, if people decide organizations have done enough.

Death by nitrogen hypoxia — by breathing high concentrations of nitrogen, starving a person of oxygen until death — occurs from time to time accidentally. Proponents of the nitrogen hypoxia method, also approved by Mississippi and Oklahoma but not yet used in those states, argue that nitrogen gas will quickly render the subject unconscious, with death ensuing within minutes. Nitrogen gas asphyxiation was previously used to euthanize pets. The group states in its 2020 guidelines that nitrogen gas “is unacceptable” for animals other than chickens and turkeys. It is one thing to “botch” an execution, which is commonly understood to mean that an execution caused unnecessary agony or showed gross incompetence by the execution team.
