A 44-year-old Florida woman accused of using her mother’s identity to apply for hurricane aid told a Bradenton city employee that she looked so much younger because of botox, the police department said Saturday. When the Torres arrived to pick up the check Thursday a city employee challenged her on her appearance compared to the age in the application. “Her explanation of ‘botox treatments’ failed to convince the employee,” police said in a statement. Bradenton is a city of around 55,000 north of Sarasota, on the state's western coast. That area was affected by powerful Hurricane Helene as it passed by in September, and in October Hurricane Milton made landfall in Siesta Key, just south of Sarasota.

Attorneys for X Corp., the firm established by Elon Musk to take over Twitter, filed a notice of appearance on Thursday in the bankruptcy case of Alex Jones and his Infowars platform. The new owners of satirical news site The Onion had been declared the successful bidders for Jones’ controversial platform, alongside families of the Sandy Hook massacre victims. Musk has allowed Infowars to broadcast on X while Infowars’ fate is in limbo. Jones has used Infowars as a platform to promote conspiracy theories, far-right ideologies and misinformation. Jones’ bankruptcy stems from his obligation to pay $1.5 billion in damages to families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims, who filed defamation lawsuits over his false claims that the massacre was a hoax.

President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that oil and gas industry executive Chris Wright, a staunch defender of fossil fuel use, would be his pick to lead the Department of Energy. Wright is the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, an oilfield services firm based in Denver. He has stood out among oil and gas executives for his freewheeling style, and describes himself as a tech nerd. The secretary also oversees the aging U.S. nuclear weapons complex, nuclear energy waste disposal, and 17 national labs. If confirmed by the Senate, Wright will replace Jennifer Granholm, a supporter of electric vehicles, emerging energy sources like geothermal power and a backer of carbon-free wind, solar and nuclear energy.

While Gaetz’s ability to be confirmed appears on the rocks among Senate Republicans, President-elect Donald Trump’s team remains confident he will eventually be confirmed, even if it’s after an ugly battle. Gaetz and Trump attorney Todd Blanche are moving full speed ahead on trying to fill out the Justice Department, according to sources familiar with the planning. In his few terms in the House, Gaetz has often been embroiled in controversy. The attorney, John Clune, also called for the release of a House Ethics Committee report detailing the committee’s investigation into Gaetz, which has been ongoing for several years. Since the Truth Social post, Trump has not asked for any specific Cabinet pick, including Gaetz, to be confirmed via recess appointment.

On the right, familiar conspiracy theories about voting popularized by President-elect Donald Trump continued to circulate. NewsGuard said there was “no evidence” that Starlink was used to interfere with the presidential election in Trump’s favor. As the 2024 election results were reported, social media users on the left began to speculate about Musk’s role in vote counting. “Kamala Harris left us a breadcrumb,” one TikTok user said about the updated language on the fund’s website in a video that received over 700,000 views. CISA responded to this speculation on its website’s “Rumor vs. Reality” resource, where it has debunked election misinformation.

The U.S. on Saturday reported its first case of a more aggressive strain of mpox: an individual in California who had recently traveled from Eastern Africa. It is classified into two distinct groups: the more aggressive strain, clade I, and a somewhat milder strain, clade II. In the current outbreak, clade I has been spreading largely through contact with infected animals and transmission within households, according to disease experts. But a version of the strain, clade Ib, has also spread through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men in Congo. That’s compared to a 0.2% global fatality rate for the 2022 outbreak.

Ford Motor Company has agreed to pay $165 million, the second-largest auto penalty ever issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to settle charges it failed to comply with federal recall requirements. “The total civil penalty amount of $165 million is second only to the Takata airbag consent order in the agency’s 54-year history,” the NHTSA said in a statement. The Ford penalty stems from a multi-year investigation into the automaker's handling of defective rollover safety cameras on a number of its models, including its popular F-150 trucks and Explorer SUVs. In a statement, Ford said it disagreed with NHTSA's findings but that it was pleased to administratively settle the dispute with the regulator. This Arthur was played by Clive Owen in the 2004 film, “King Arthur,” alongside Keira Knightley as Guinevere. The sixth-century “Artognou stone," discovered in 1998, has linked Tintagel with King Arthur for some scholars, though others dismiss it. For Brandon Mintz, it was the text messages and calls that started rolling in from friends and colleagues asking how high bitcoin prices could go. Strategic reserve could set off 'bitcoin space race'Under this idea, the U.S. would establish a “strategic bitcoin reserve,” like the ones it already maintains for gold and oil. A day later, Trump echoed the strategic reserve idea, though did not put a specific figure on it. On Nov. 6, Lummis posted on X in all-caps, “WE ARE GOING TO BUILD A STRATEGIC BITCOIN RESERVE,” alongside two American flags. For crypto supporters, a strategic bitcoin reserve would send a signal to markets and countries alike about the digital token’s value.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s consistent campaign pledge to impose sweeping tariffs on products imported into the U.S. is likely to face stiff challenges in court and potentially pushback from Congress. There are potential legal limits to Trump’s authority, even though he has said he would unilaterally impose the increases. But a broad array of tariffs on allies “could cross the line,” especially as the Supreme Court has taken a generally pro-business stance in recent years, he added. During the Biden administration, the Supreme Court embraced a theory called the “major questions doctrine.” Biden’s ambitious plan to wipe out billions of dollars in student debt was one of the proposals the Supreme Court faulted. The Supreme Court declined to take up the issue.

There was plenty of criticism surrounding Friday’s much-hyped Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing event streaming on Netflix, but it had nothing to do with the boxers in the ring. Issues with video streaming quality, pixelation, stuttering and even outright crashes lit up social media well before the main event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as undercard fighters slugged it out. Tracking website downdetector.com showed a surge of reports of problems with Netflix’s website beginning just before 8 p.m. local time.
