In the year ahead, the use of biometrics — an individual’s unique physical identifiers, such as fingerprints and faces — will be expanded at airports in the United States and abroad, a shift to enhance security, replace physical identification such as passports and driver’s licenses, and reduce the amount of time required by travelers to pass through airports. Biometric technology will be seen everywhere from bag drops at the check-in counters to domestic security screening. This program is currently available at 30 airports nationwide, including Salt Lake City International Airport and Denver International Airport; the T.S.A. said it will expand to more than 400 airports in the coming years. The pilot program is now available at five airports, including La Guardia Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

With 2023 in the rearview mirror, we look ahead at what travelers will face in 2024. At United Airlines, for example, smarter software can offer rebooking options and issue food and lodging vouchers when a flight is canceled, rather than just rebooking a flight. United Airlines has suspended its flights indefinitely, said Josh Freed, a United spokesman. This year, travelers are expected to choose faraway places and board small ships, according to Virtuoso, the consortium of luxury travel agencies.

CHICAGO (AP) — As temperatures hover below freezing in Chicago, dozens of asylum-seekers are staying in the lower level of a library until the bitter cold gripping much of the country lifts. But after that, Chicago’s plans for offering immediate shelter to the growing number of migrants arriving in the nation’s third-largest city remain murky. Last week, it was parked city buses. “The city’s favorite word for everything is ‘temporary,’” said Vianney Marzullo, a volunteer who has helped migrants staying at O’Hare International Airport. Marylin Gonzalez, 34, slept on the buses last week along with her husband and three children, ages 15, 16 and 18.

Heavy snow and freezing rain grounded hundreds of flights in Germany on Wednesday, including at Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s busiest, where half of the scheduled flights were canceled. At Frankfurt Airport, about 500 of the 1,030 scheduled flights were canceled because of the weather on Wednesday, when 115,000 passengers had been expected, the airport said in a statement. The weather-related disruptions would continue on Thursday, the airport said, advising passengers to check their flight status before traveling to the airport. Munich Airport grounded about 150 flights on Wednesday, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's Transport Ministry said on Tuesday it received five proposals from interested parties to participate in the roll-out of a project to boost passenger transport on railways being developed across the country. The ministry said it is reviewing the proposals, without identifying the companies expressed interest. The announcement comes a day after the deadline for proposals, set out in a decree late last year that called for plans from concession holders outlining how their freight railways could be adapted for passenger use. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whose term ends this year, said last November that if companies decide not to provide passenger services the government would do so. The government has prioritized development on seven routes that span northern border cities, the Gulf and Pacific coasts, major cities in central Mexico, and the capital's secondary Felipe Angeles international airport.

Amazon trailers are parked at an Amazon Air gateway at Miami International Airport in Miami, Florida, on Sept. 26, 2023. Amazon is rolling out an artificial intelligence tool that can answer shoppers' questions about a product, a spokesperson confirmed, as the company continues to experiment with generative AI. It then returns an answer within a few seconds, primarily by summarizing information collected from product reviews and the listing itself. The feature could keep shoppers from scrolling through pages of reviews or reading through a listing to find information about a product. The tool is designed not to veer off subject, and will return an error message if it can't answer questions such as, "Who is Jeff Bezos?"
