NATO navies worry about those subs and they've increased their focus on countering undersea threats. Nordic navies are investing in their own submarine fleets to keep track of Russia's boats. A particular concern for the alliance is Russia's submarines, many of which are assigned to those two fleets. The potential threat from Russia's undersea forces has prompted its neighbors to reevaluate their own submarine needs. But Sweden's western neighbors, Norway and Denmark, both see a need for bigger sub fleets.

OTTAWA, July 18 (Reuters) - Canada's annual inflation rate dropped more than expected to a 27-month low of 2.8% in June, data showed on Tuesday, led by lower energy prices while food and shelter cost increases persisted. Month-over-month, the consumer price index was up 0.1%, Statistics Canada said, which was also lower than the 0.3% forecast. "Inflation is definitely moving in the right direction, but we're seeing stickier and more persistent core measures," said Michael Greenberg, senior vice president and portfolio manager at Franklin Templeton Investment Solutions. The average of two of the Bank of Canada's (BoC) core measures of underlying inflation, CPI-median and CPI-trim, came in at 3.8% compared with 3.9% in May. "The Bank of Canada's preferred measures of core inflation, which exclude significant moves in individual categories, show that underlying price pressures remain sticky," said Royce Mendes, head of macro strategy at Desjardins Group.

Russia's current level of debt is 22.8 trillion roubles, or 14.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), Deputy Finance Minister Irina Okladnikova said on Tuesday, naming 20% of GDP as the upper boundary of the safe debt limit. "We understand that in the current situation, we will increase debt, it is a hopeless situation," said Okladnikova at a meeting in Russia's upper house of parliament. "Therefore, we will increase debt, but we will try to remain within safe limits," Okladnikova said. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said 2024 budget spending would be cut by around 450 billion roubles - 10% of so-called 'unprotected' spending - to free up money for other priorities. "We have budget expenditure of a little more than 29 trillion roubles," he said, with just 4.5 trillion in line for cuts, implying around 450 billion roubles (4.97 billion) slated for redistribution next year.

REUTERS/Fatos BytyciPRISTINA, July 18 (Reuters) - Workers at a bear sanctuary in Kosovo have come up with creative ways to keep their twenty brown bears cool as temperatures near 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) this week. The bears' pools are regularly topped up with fresh water and their keepers hurl fruit and vegetables into the water to encourage the animals to swim. They also place frozen fruit and vegetables they dub "ice creams" up in the trees, where the bears find them in just a few seconds. "The temperatures are very high and their fur is very thick and it is not easy for them," said Taulant Hoxha, from the bear sanctuary.

"It's very sad that children are conscious of this," said Valenzuela, who advised the government during the drafting of the "Trans Law". Vox has vowed to repeal the Trans Law and has joined the PP in challenging it before the Constitutional Court, arguing it violates child protection rights and the right to bodily integrity. So, in an effort to face my fears head-on, I recently attended British Airways' Flying with Confidence course. But in the same way that pilots always prepare for the worst kind of turbulence, aircraft designers do too. Breathing is keyOne of the main takeaways from the course was how to control my fear of flying through breath control.

Ukraine says fighting in east has intensified

KYIV, July 16 (Reuters) - Fighting in eastern Ukraine has "somewhat intensified" as Ukrainian and Russian forces clash in at least three areas on the eastern front, a senior Ukrainian defence official said on Sunday. Separately, the Ukrainian military indicated it had taken control of part of a southeastern village in Donetsk region, near a string of small settlements Ukraine recaptured in June. Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said on Telegram that Russian forces have been attacking in the direction of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region for two successive days. Maliar also said the two armies were pummelling one another around the ruined city of Bakhmut but that Ukrainian forces were "gradually moving forward" along its southern flank. Kyiv has made incremental gains in parts of the east and south since launching its long-awaited counteroffensive.

Britain holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month and has been seeking a global leadership role in AI regulation. In June, U.N. Kong Seong-pyo, a 60-year-old Cheongju resident who frequently uses the underpass, said the government should have restricted access to the tunnel when flooding was expected. The Ministry of Interior and Safety said nine people were missing across the country as of 6 p.m. (0900 GMT) as heavy downpours caused landslides and floods, with evacuation orders covering 8,852 people. He said Russia is struggling to knock out Ukrainian artillery while Russian forces suffer "mass deaths." The counter-battery fight is critical in the counteroffensive, and it looks like Ukraine has an edge. After he was fired, he revealed publicly that Ukraine is bloodying his forces in an important fight, the artillery battle. In this fight, Ukraine relies heavily on rocket artillery systems like the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, or howitzers like the 155mm M777s. Russian artillery can have the same effect on Ukraine though if left unanswered, which is a reason why the counter-battery fight matters.

Investors had been banking on the study results being the next big driver of the company's shares. That's due to high demand and after Novo raised its profit outlook in April, said Berenberg analyst Kerry Holford. If the risk reduction was between 10 and 14%, shares would decrease by less than 5%. A year ago, investors said a risk reduction of 10 to 14% in the trial would put significant downward pressure on the stock, Holford said. A classic marionette might have eight to 10 strings. Leah Ogawa’s latest puppet, an ethereal tree-shaped form, has more than 600: clustered into thickets and tangles, threaded through eye bolts on the ceiling, and fanning out overhead to all corners of the room. Or you could call it a dance performed amid a landscape of strange props. Or a kinetic sculpture activated from the sidelines. Throughout the 21-minute arc of “Divine Generations,” a silent four-person ensemble pulls and unspools various cords around the room, to coax inert disc-shaped elements into a wakeful upward dance.

Global warming is accelerating, with temperatures not just rising but rising faster than ever. But it is simultaneously proving harder to compartmentalize — even in places such as New York City that once looked to residents like concrete fortresses against nature. Last weekend, it was Hudson Valley streets turned into swimming pools by supercharged rain and ravines disgorging landslides that those in New York City watched with a mix of horror and false relief. The flooding was “upstate,” we told ourselves, though by “upstate,” of course, we meant not even 50 miles north of the city. The United States Military Academy at West Point was briefly flooded by a once-in-a-thousand-years climate event.

In the United States, FEMA has traditionally provided all flood insurance plans through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). According to the Insurance Information Institute, an industry trade group, Florida, Louisiana and Texas account for 40% of all flood insurance policies nationwide. The origin of this exclusion can be traced to the 1968 National Flood Insurance Act, which established the NFIP. For example, in Miami, flood insurance can sometimes rival the amount that people pay for homeowners insurance, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
