Ford Motor on Monday reduced prices of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck by between $6,000 and nearly $10,000, the latest sign of sluggish demand for electric vehicles. The price cuts come as inventories of unsold electric vehicles are rising on dealer lots, and follow several rounds of discounting by Tesla, the dominant seller of electric cars. Ford is lowering prices after it temporarily halted production of the truck this year to upgrade its assembly line and increase output. By the fall, the company expects its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center near Detroit to be able to churn out 150,000 Lightnings a year, triple its current production capacity. Competition in the electric vehicle business is growing more intense.

Tesla builds first Cybertruck after two years of delays

July 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) built its first Cybertruck at the electric-vehicle marker's plant in Austin, Texas, the company said in a tweet on Saturday, after two years of delays. loadingTesla founder Elon Musk introduced the pickup truck in a 2019 reveal where the vehicle's designer cracked the vehicle's supposedly unbreakable "armor glass" windows. In a May shareholder meeting, Musk said that Tesla would like to produce a quarter-million Cybertrucks a year, depending on demand. The Cybertruck launch will give Tesla an EV entrant in one of the most profitable segments of the U.S. market and a competitor to electric pickups from the likes of Ford Motor(F.N) and Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O), both of which have launched models in still-limited numbers. Reuters reported last year that Tesla aims to start mass production of Cybertruck at the end of 2023.

The three Detroit automakers and the United Auto Workers union have begun negotiating a new labor contract in what could become the most contentious talks between the two sides in perhaps half a century. elected a president who has vowed to win back many of the wage and benefit concessions the union has ceded over the last two decades. Shawn Fain, an outsider candidate, prevailed in an upset election victory over the incumbent U.A.W. president this year largely by promising to take a more militant approach to contract negotiations than his recent predecessors. The vote in Texas is being closely watched in the industry as it could drive similar moves in other states. Reuters reported last month that Texas planned to mandate EV charging companies to include Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) standard if the companies wanted access to a program to electrify highways using federal funds. Washington state has talked about similar plans and Kentucky has mandated that EV charging companies include Tesla's plug. The rollout of the federal funds require charging companies to offer CCS. But plans to adopt Tesla's technology by Ford Motor (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) have prompted a flurry of automakers and charging companies to embrace the technology.

Detroit automakers, like their global counterparts, have been focused on cost reductions, which in some cases include job cuts, to help accelerate a shift to electric vehicles (EVs) from gasoline-powered vehicles. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers have gone on until the strike deadline and beyond in past years. "To win, we're likely going to have to take action," UAW Fain said on Wednesday. The Detroit Three want to close the cost gap they have with foreign automakers with non-unionized U.S. factories. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike.

But the board proceeded anyway — and put Mr. Meyers in charge. The Environmental Protection Agency in April proposed new 2027-2032 vehicle standards that would be the most dramatic reductions in history. The EPA estimates that to meet the new standards, automakers would need to have 60% of new production be electric vehicles by 2030 and 67% by 2032. The rules would cut emissions by 56% from existing 2026 requirements to speed the transition away from gasoline-powered engines to electric vehicles. Democratic attorneys general from New York, California, Pennsylvania, Illinois and other states said the EPA should go further. Ford auto sales rise on robust demand, improved supply

July 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) on Thursday followed rivals in reporting a rise in second-quarter U.S. auto sales, driven by easing supply chain snags and pent-up demand for personal transportation. Industry-wide U.S. new vehicle sales in June were 1.37 million units, with an annual sales rate of about 15.7 million, according to data released by Wards Intelligence on Wednesday. Ford's quarter was powered by a 26% jump in truck sales, one of the company's main profit drivers. Sales of the electric version of the company's popular F-150 truck more than doubled to 4,466 vehicles from last year. However, Ford's overall EV sales fell 2.8% to 14,843 vehicles amid lingering supply snags.

Ford Motor said Thursday that its new-vehicle sales rose 10 percent in the three months between April and June, thanks to robust demand for trucks. The automaker sold 531,662 motor vehicles, up from 483,688 in the second quarter of the year, as sales of pickups, delivery vans and heavy trucks increased 26 percent. The gain in truck sales more than offset a decline of nearly 3 percent in sales of electric vehicles. Ford sold 14,843 battery-powered cars and trucks in the quarter, down from 15,273 in the same period a year earlier. The upgrade work mainly affected the Mustang Mach-E, whose sales declined 21 percent in the second quarter.

San Francisco, July 3 (Reuters) - Kentucky is requiring that electric vehicle charging companies include Tesla's plug if they want to be part of a state program to electrify highways using federal dollars, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. Kentucky's plan went into effect on Friday, making it the first state to mandate Tesla's charging technology, although Texas and Washington states previously shared such plans with Reuters. In addition to federal requirements for the rival Combined Charging System (CCS), Kentucky mandates Tesla's plug, called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), at charging stations, according to Kentucky's request for proposal (RFP) for the state's EV charging program on Friday. Each port shall also be capable of connecting to and charging vehicles equipped with charging ports compliant with the North American Charging Standard (NACS)," the documents say. It added that the rule allows charging stations to have other connectors, as long as they support CCS, a national standard.
