"This (subsidies) is an important factor in the German market as nearly two-thirds of passenger car registrations are commercial," the market research firm said. Hyundai said Monday it will raise factory worker pay 25% by 2028, matching the general wage increase won by the UAW during that period. Toyota raised factory pay 9% to 10% starting in January, while Honda said it will increase wages 11% during the same period. Fain said terrified auto executives at nonunion plants are raising wages, and he called Toyota's pay increase the UAW bump. When cost of living wages are factored in, workers will get about 33% raises, with the top assembly line employee making about $42 per hour.

Researchers at the institute looked at records of almost 18,000 incidents in which vehicles struck pedestrians. Tall front ends are common among full-size trucks and SUVs but they aren’t exclusive to very big vehicles. In general, vehicles with box-shaped front ends, even when they’re only medium height, are roughly 26% more likely to kill a pedestrian, according to the IIHS. NHTSA has also proposed adding pedestrian safety tests to its regimen of crash tests and other safety measurements for new vehicles. But automakers should also consider pedestrian safety in the design of their vehicles, IIHS president David Harkey said in a statement.

New York CNN —The United Automobile Workers’ won big wage and benefit gains in tentative contract agreements with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. Now, non-union companies are rushing to give their non-unionized workers raises, too. Toyota said it’s raising wages by more than 9%, and Honda announced 11% wage hikes beginning next year. While the auto companies didn’t directly attribute their raises to the UAW, the UAW has said it will be targeting non-union factories in the wake of its big wins. UAW President Shawn Fain already encouraged non-union autoworkers to join the UAW, and Fain has called the non-union wage increases the “UAW bump.” The UAW hopes its new contracts with Detroit automakers will inspire other workers to unionize.

New York CNN —Stellantis is offering buyouts to half of its salaried US staff in a cost cutting move. That comes to 6,400 of the 12,700 nonunion staff. “As the U.S. automotive industry continues to face challenging market conditions, Stellantis is taking the necessary structural actions to protect our operations and the company,” said the company’s statement. Stellantis has yet to put any pure EV cars for sale in the US market and has more to do to catch up. General Motors and Ford, which also just reached tentative labor deals with the UAW, both announced cuts to their salaried staff, with both layoffs and buyouts, in the months before the strike.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the UAW Local 598 said 51.8% of votes cast were against the proposed deal. The vote signals that approval of the deal, which is set to raise costs significantly for GM, is not guaranteed. Union workers are voting on contracts from each of Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI), General Motors and Ford Motor (F.N), after the first coordinated strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers.

Nov 10 (Reuters) - Hospitality workers in Las Vegas reached a tentative labor deal with Wynn Resorts (WYNN.O) hours before a strike, their unions said on Friday, ending a strike threat against major casino operators that could have crippled tourist operations in the city. Casino resort operators in Las Vegas have been earning record profits from a steady post-pandemic recovery in tourism. It also averts the threat of a major disruption to popular events expected to draw thousands of visitors to the tourist-driven economy of Las Vegas. The city will be hosting the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix this month and the 58th Super Bowl, which is scheduled to take place in February 2024. Visits to the city in September were 4% lower than in the same period in 2019, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
