CNN —A New York judge has found Donald Trump and his adult sons liable for fraud, saying the Trumps provided false financial statements for roughly a decade. Judge Arthur Engoron’s ruling came days before the civil case involving the New York attorney general’s office and the former president was set to go to trial. Engoron granted Attorney General Letitia James’ motion for summary judgment, finding Trump, his sons, and others “to be liable as a matter of law for persistent violations” of New York state law. He found the financial statements the Trumps provided to lenders and insurers for about a decade to be false and said they repeatedly engaged in fraud. In the order, the judge rejected Trump’s deposition testimony in which the former president said that the financial statements were not fraudulent because they contained disclaimers.

watch nowChina's urbanization drive may be drawing to a close — and that could further hurt the already ailing property sector, according to China economist Hao Hong. "Fixing the property sector may be a multi-year or even a decade's work in front of us. China's property market has been embattled by faltering consumer confidence, as property giants Evergrande and Country Garden are mired in debt problems. Not having an overbearing Chinese property sector actually is good for the Chinese economy going forward. Hong noted that 18 trillion yuan ($2.46 trillion) worth of Chinese property were sold two years ago.

Judge Arthur Engoron in his bombshell decision also canceled the New York business certificates of Trump, the Trump Organization, and the other defendants, including two of his sons, in a lawsuit by the state Attorney General's Office. The defendants in the case include Trump, his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, former Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, company executive Jeff McConney, and Trump Organization entities. Engoron also ordered sanctions of $7,500 for five attorneys who represented the Trump defendants for making frivolous and previously rejected arguments in court filings. In the fourth criminal case, Trump is charged with falsifying business records related to a 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Even after Engoron appointed an independent financial monitor for the Trump Organization last year, "defendants have continued to disseminate false and misleading information while conducting business," the judge wrote.

Chinese property giant Evergrande's shares have tanked 27% so far this week. AdvertisementAdvertisementRecent developments at Chinese property giant Evergrande aren't quite inspiring confidence in China's real estate market. Evergrande is worth about 5.3 billion Hong Kong dollars, or $678 million, now – a massive fall from grace from the company's heydays in 2017 when it was worth nearly 420 billion Hong Kong dollars. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe massive slump in Evergrande shares also suggests that the worst is far from over for China's property sector, wrote Junrong Yep, a market strategist at online trading platform IG, in a Tuesday note seen by Insider. China Evergrande shares on the Hong Kong Exchange were 7% lower 40 Hong Kong cents at midday on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House. Engoron’s ruling, in a phase of the case known as summary judgment, resolves the key claim in James’ lawsuit, but several others remain. “Today, a judge ruled in our favor and found that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in years of financial fraud," James said in a statement. James’ lawsuit is one of several legal headaches for Trump, the Republican front-runner in next year's election. James’ lawsuit does not carry the potential of prison time, but could complicate Trump's ability to transact real estate deals.

A former China statistics official said the country's property developers need to "transform" their businesses. The crisis came to a boiling point this summer when other Chinese real-estate developers ran into similar issues, and the sector started to default on its bond payments. The market was so hot that Chinese developers were taking on massive borrowings to build apartments ahead of demand. In fact, property developers built so many apartments that one-fifth of the homes in China were empty, Insider's Lina Batarags reported in October 2021. There are now fears China's property troubles could spill into the broader domestic economy and the international markets.

The tentative agreement comes after the guild and the AMPTP — which represents major studios and streaming services, including Warner Bros. They were joined on the picket lines by over 160,000 union members of SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, on July 14. Broadcast networks' fall TV schedules were loaded with reality series, whose writers aren't subject to the WGA agreement.

REUTERS/Michele Tantussi/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Sept 25 (Reuters) - The German government will put on indefinite hold plans to require more stringent building insulation standards, environment minister Robert Habeck told Reuters, an effort to help prop up the ailing building industry. The about-face from the German government comes ahead of a closely watched meeting between the building industry and government leaders with Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday to address a major slump in the sector. Abolition of the insulation standards has been a top demand of industry, which says the measures are too expensive and put a further damper on the depressed construction industry. "High interest rates and inflation are a heavy burden for the construction industry," Habeck told Reuters, noting that the insulation measures now "can wait". For years, low interest rates fuelled a global boom, igniting interest in German property, seen as safe and stable as the country.

Big-name developers such as Country Garden Holdings continue to teeter close to default even to this day, keeping home-buyer sentiment depressed. As of the end of August, the combined floor area of unsold homes stood at 648 million square meters (7 billion square feet), the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show. That would be equal to 7.2 million homes, according to Reuters calculations, based on the average home size of 90 square meters (970 square feet). “How many vacant homes are there now? Each expert gives a very different number, with the most extreme believing the current number of vacant homes are enough for 3 billion people,” said He Keng, 81, a former deputy head of the statistics bureau.

Residential property prices fell by 9.9% year-on-year, the steepest decline since the start of data collection in 2000, the federal statistics office said. Prices fell by 1.5% on the quarter, with steeper declines in larger cities than in more sparsely populated areas. In cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, apartment prices fell by 9.8% and single and two-family house prices dropped by 12.6% on the year. Building permits for apartments in Germany declined 31.5% in July from a year earlier, the statistics office disclosed on Monday, as construction prices rose by almost 9% on the year. German housing industry association GdW on Friday sounded the alarm over the situation calling for government support for construction companies.

I came to New York from Japan with my family to attend high school. The building in the movie is called the Bramford, but the exteriors, famously, were those of the Dakota on the Upper West Side. What struck me about the movie’s apartments was their aspect of interiority — the way they seemed to harbor secrets. I also remember their small, framed views of high-rise New York City buildings. Even though the film is, of course, a horror story and the building turns out to be cursed, “Rosemary’s Baby” only made me more excited about living in New York.

Now the couple are thinking about going back on the housing market with DZA. Will the prospective buildings impose a weight limit, as they often do? Will Great Danes be on a list of forbidden breeds, as they frequently are? Painting large breeds with broad strokes reinforces erroneous beliefs, such as that greyhounds need constant exercise, when, in fact, many are couch potatoes, or that pit bulls are natural born killers. “It’s almost like you’re an outcast if you have a large dog,” said Ina Obernesser, a veterinarian in Nyack, N.Y., referring to weight limits as meager as 20 pounds.

The state pays local housing authorities to maintain and operate the units whether they’re occupied or not. As of the end of July, almost 1,800 of the vacant units had been empty for more than 60 days. Doris Romero, a housing coordinator at a Boston shelter, was stunned to hear about all the vacant apartments. People interested in housing had to apply to separate local housing agencies, often in person. Since then, Hedison and other local housing officials have cited a litany of problems.

Apartments in Zurich cost around $19,000 per square meter, according to data from Properstar. Transaction prices for apartments in the Zurich region rose 42.3% between 2013 and 2022. UBS said Wednesday that there was a perception of property in the city as "concrete gold." Renting an apartment in the city, meanwhile, cost around 47 Swiss franc ($58) per square meter, according to the Properstar data. UBS said in its Global Real Estate Bubble Index 2023, released Wednesday, that an increasing number of high-income earners and ultra-low interest rates in recent years had helped push up property prices.

The eye-popping numbers are part of a longer-term shift toward private college housing. Moody's Analytics recently warned of an "affordability crisis" for college students, noting that since 2019, rents for student housing in a sample of notable college towns had grown faster than those of regular apartments. Student housing goes privateThe gold rush in student housing is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in the 1980s and '90s, most college students either lived in bland, cinder-block-walled dorms or in conventional apartments farther from campus. But that broader embrace of living abroad has caused real-estate prices to rise in some international hotspots.
