Unlike many restaurants that work with Uber, Domino's will use its own delivery drivers to get orders to customers. But CFO Sandeep Reddy said the Uber Eats deal should reverse sluggish sales by 2024. Under the deal, Domino's will be listed on the Uber Eats platform, but the pizza deliveries will be made by Domino's. Weiner, who replaced Allison in May 2022, said on Monday's conference call that the Uber Eats deal will bring in new customers. Weiner noted that the Uber Eats deal includes securing "control of our customer data."

How to Make Your Bed the Five-Star-Hotel Way

BEDROOM SERVICE Drizzling lavender oil atop pillows can invite sleep and level up on luxury. Tucked corners. Hotel beds are what dreams are made of. “The beds can make or break a hotel,” said William Rademacher, general manager at the Talbott Hotel in Chicago. “You could have the most beautiful, gold-gilded hotel in the world but, if your beds aren’t to an exceptional level, it all falls apart.” Rademacher says the Talbott Hotel trains its housekeepers monthly on bed standards and regularly holds competitions for the “perfect bed.”

But the unique accounting standards that the industry has long relied on to make those calculations is anything but straightforward. “Hollywood accounting,” as a concept, is so specific to the entertainment business it has its own Wikipedia page. And while experts say this kind of creative accounting is perfectly legal, the tactics involve some of the most fantastical fictions ever devised in Tinseltown. To actually make the movie, the subsidiary inevitably takes on expenses — crew wages, craft services, set design, props etc. That means all of these “creative” expense allocations shouldn’t affect what net profits the studio’s shareholders see.

Before you broadcast your sudden windfall to the world, and even before you contact lottery officials, you’ll be wise to surround yourself with a team of lawyers and financial advisers. Make copies of both sides of your lottery ticket, and then lock it up somewhere only you can access it. “Find an attorney who has experience dealing with people with this level of wealth, because it is different,” says Herzig. Next up, you’ll need an accountant and a financial adviser to protect your wealth from “creditors and predators,” as Herzig puts it. But there’s one big piece of the lottery puzzle that you can’t farm out to lawyers, and that’s your mental health.

One industry official dubbed it the "no one wants to be a junior captain syndrome." Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for American's pilots union, said the number of pilots declining promotions has at least doubled in the past seven years. At United, bids for 978 captain vacancies, or about 50% of the vacancies posted, have gone unfilled in the past year, United pilot union data shows. A captain's pay is better, but junior pilots, currently, face greater risks of being subjected to unpredictable flying schedules, more on-call duty and assignments on short notice. A failure to substantially improve work rules was a major reason why United pilots overwhelmingly rejected a deal last year.

Opinion | A Look Back at Our Coming War With China

For instance, what if China seeks to take the island by force and Washington opts to not respond? Published in 2021, “2034,” is basically a beach read about how we get to nuclear war. In “The Avoidable War,” Rudd cautions that the incentives for Beijing and Washington to escalate hostilities, whether to save lives or save face, “could prove irresistible.” Ackerman and Stavridis follow that script. Both the United States and China view themselves in exceptional terms, Allison explains, as nations of destiny. “China will be a falling power far sooner than most people think,” Brands and Beckley declare.

The news sent the price of XRP, a token designed for cross-border payments, up some 70% to about 92 cents. Gensler has said that most crypto tokens — with bitcoin as a notable exception — are securities that fall under the SEC’s jurisdiction. ‘Some much needed sunlight’Despite the nuance of Torres’ ruling, crypto investors are cheering it as a long overdue win. “This ruling, although nuanced, provides some much needed sunlight and cheer into the altcoin space, those non-Bitcoin tokens.”

But I can’t help imagine him quietly fist-pumping the moment he got wind of the latest inflation data. For context, a year ago the CPI peaked at 9.1% — the worst inflation in more than 40 years. After a punishing stretch of rising prices, “the fever is breaking,” wrote Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank. In other words, the Fed may actually pull off the “soft landing” — lowering inflation without tanking the economy — that few believed was doable even six months ago. “The odds of achieving a soft landing just went up drastically,” Dan Alpert, managing director of Westwood Capital, told me.

J&J has consistently denied that its now-discontinued talc baby powder contains asbestos or causes cancer. Satterley asked jurors to award Hernandez punitive damages about nine times greater than so-called compensatory damages, which include $3.8 million for his medical costs as well as damages for pain and suffering. The U.S. Supreme Court has found that punitive damages should generally be no more than nine times compensatory damages, and that a higher ratio can be reduced on appeal as excessive. J&J has said its talc products are safe and do not contain asbestos, which has been linked to mesothelioma. J&J said in bankruptcy court filings that the costs of its talc-related verdicts, settlements and legal fees have reached about $4.5 billion.

SummaryCompanies BT boss who spearheaded fibre roll-out to step downJansen simplified former monopoly, retreated from sportsShares nearly halved under his tenureLONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - BT (BT.L) Chief Executive Philip Jansen will step down within the next year, having set plans in motion for Britain's biggest telecoms provider to cut jobs, become leaner and complete the roll-out of a national fibre network. Jansen had informed BT's board of directors that he plans to leave at "an appropriate moment" within the next 12 months, BT said on Monday. Since early 2019, Jansen has steered BT through a crucial period in its 177-year-history, secured funding for a national fibre network for 25 million homes and businesses and handled the arrival of billionaire investor Patrick Drahi on the shareholder register. "We suspect investors will find this transition a little premature given the fruits of BT's fibre investments have still yet to be proven out," analysts at J.P.Morgan wrote in a client note. Analysts named BT's consumer brands boss Marc Allera and Allison Kirkby, a BT board member and chief executive of Sweden's Telia, as possible successors.

Women’s labor force participation has rebounded from the pandemic “she-cession” and returned to its pre-pandemic form of making progressively historic labor market gains. By February of 2020, the labor force participation rate for prime working-age women was 77% — just shy of the record 77.3% set during the dot-com era, BLS data shows. The pandemic walloped the leisure and hospitality and education and health services sectors, where women make up the majority of the workforce. The economic evolution and recovery from the pandemic helped accelerate favorable drivers for women to enter the workforce. Separately, new research shows that although women were outnumbered by men in the US workforce, women could be disproportionately affected by businesses’ adoption of generative AI: One recent analysis estimates that 79% of working women (nearly 59 million) are in occupations susceptible to disruption and automation.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

July 3 (Reuters) - The number of U.S. women who died within a year after pregnancy more than doubled between 1999 and 2019, with the highest deaths among Black women, researchers said on Monday. There were an estimated 1,210 maternal deaths in 2019, compared with 505 in 1999, according to a study published in the medical journal JAMA. Unlike previous U.S. studies of maternal mortality, which focused on national trends, the current study analyzed data state-by-state. To the researchers' surprise, Black women had the highest maternal mortality rates in some Northeast states. "Our findings provide important insights on maternal mortality rates leading up to the pandemic, and it's likely that we'll see a continued increase in the risk of maternal mortality across all populations if we analyze data from subsequent years," Bryant said.

CNN —Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months waffled over whether a US recession is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in. Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output, so if more Americans are forced to cut back because they were laid off, that might throw the US economy into a recession. Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told CNN last week that he expects a mild recession early next year, rather than the late 2022 recession many have predicted. That means that laid-off Americans were often able to find a new job quickly due to a hot job market.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to get better anytime soon. This summer, airfare is expected to remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, though a bit lower than their 2022 levels, according to travel research site Hopper.
