JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

Vance was swift to name China the “biggest threat to our country,” in an interview with Fox News Monday as the RNC got underway. He’s made countering what Washington says is a security threat from China a cornerstone of his foreign policy, even as he’s worked to stabilize communications with Beijing. And Beijing – which is grappling with its own economic woes – may be preparing for more friction if Trump takes office. The substance of Biden’s China policy – in terms of sanctions, tariffs and competition – has not been that different from Trump’s, she noted, and Biden has been keener on strengthening alliances and coalitions to counter China together. “But the style of Biden’s China policy is more predictable and stabilizing.

Hong Kong CNN —A Wall Street Journal reporter in Hong Kong said she was fired after being elected to lead a press union that has come under attack by Beijing amid a national security crackdown. Selina Cheng, who was elected chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) on June 22, said in a statement posted Wednesday on X that she had been terminated from her job covering China’s car sector earlier in the day. Both Hong Kong officials and Beijing state media have accused it of siding with protesters during the anti-government demonstrations in 2019, a charge the association has denied. But critics have increasingly bemoaned the territory’s shrinking press freedoms since Beijing imposed a national security on Hong Kong after the 2019 protests. “The Wall Street Journal has been and continues to be a fierce and vocal advocate for press freedom in Hong Kong and around the world,” he said.

Milwaukee CNN —Donald Trump will pull off his greatest feat yet as Joe Biden confronts his darkest hour. The 45th president’s comeback will only be fully realized if he becomes the second one-term president to win a return to the White House in November. But that’s one reason why his campaign is pulling its punches on Biden in the hope he stays in the race. President Joe Biden gestures to reporters as he steps off Air Force One upon arrival at Dover Air Force Base on July 17, 2024. After Trump escaped the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, his campaign has leveraged the aftermath to reshape his image.

When making a short, creators can add copyrighted music to videos using the YouTube shorts audio library. TikTok is still the go-to platform for music marketers looking to drive attention to songs. YouTube shorts may still be a tough sell for some marketers, however. YouTube is a major hub for long-form music content, and its shorts feature could help drive fans to artists' music videos and other original content, said Johnny Cloherty, CEO of the music-marketing firm Songfluencer.

Jerusalem CNN —The Biden administration received another rebuff from Israel Wednesday night – this time from the country’s parliament – over the United States’ long-standing support for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state. A two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been US policy for decades, but absent negotiations between the two sides, and a lack of sustained effort by the US to make it happen, means faith in such an outcome has dwindled. On Wednesday evening, the Israeli parliament made clear its position, voting by 68 to 9 to reject any creation of a Palestinian state. “The Knesset of Israel firmly opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan (river). What we have is multilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood and unilateral Israeli rejection,” Scheindlin says.

CNN —Authorities in Paraguay seized over 4 tons of cocaine with a market value of around $240 million inside a shipment of sugar that was destined for Belgium, the country’s anti-drug agency Senad said Tuesday. The cocaine bust – named “Operation Sweetness” – is the largest in the country’s history and was carried out in capital Asuncion’s seaport, according to Senad. Rachid provided few details into the investigation but said an organized criminal group was likely behind the shipment. “Nowadays, drugs don’t leave Paraguay, the drugs are confiscated here in our territory, and now the big challenge is to prevent drugs entering Paraguay, clearly the country is not a cocaine producer,” Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña told local media after the drug bust. Peña said the country is “used as drug route and obviously this (bust) is going to discourage (traffickers).”“I think this is a signal sent to organized crime groups to stop using Paraguay, because they will be met with authorities that are determined,” the president said.

Beijing considers democratically governed Taiwan as a part of its territory, and Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously said reunification with the mainland was "a historical inevitability." Trump said, "Taiwan should pay us for defense." Taiwan doesn't give us anything," he added.

“It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. The two became close friends, a relationship that helped Vance earn Trump’s endorsement in a contested primary for an open Ohio Senate seat. As a senator, Vance quickly won over the thought leaders of Trump’s populist movement. Vance and Trump Jr. embraced on the convention stage Tuesday afternoon as they prepared for their moments in the spotlight. Challenges certainly remain for Vance to maintain his position as next in line to the throne in Trump’s party.

Gaelen Morse | ReutersRepublican presidential nominee Donald Trump's pick of Sen. JD Vance as his vice presidential running mate will have sent chills down spines in Kyiv Tuesday morning. Ash has previously questioned Vance's position on Ukraine and the suggestion that Europe should bear the responsibility of helping Ukraine to defend itself against Russia. Trump has always appeared ambivalent over the war in Ukraine and continuing aid. The comment was an ominous one for Ukraine, however, suggesting Trump could be tempted to pull the rug on further aid.
