Carnival's CEO said a fuel surcharge is "certainly not off the table" during an earnings call. To help offset soaring oil prices, cruise lines and airlines can charge passengers fees known as fuel surcharges. AdvertisementAdvertisementCarnival said it expected a net impact of $130 million in the fourth quarter due to rising fuel costs and unfavorable currency exchange rates. He said a fuel surcharge wouldn't be implemented in the near term, and it would only impact future bookings, rather than applied retroactively. "We continue to work aggressively to manage fuel costs the best way possible by consuming less," he said on the Friday earnings call.

Meta's AI initiatives are likely to be a key aspect of how it monetizes products and services going forward, while bringing more users and customers into the AI fold. Whereas Meta's headset is priced for mass-market adoption, Apple's headset is clearly a premium device targeted to those who demand the most cutting-edge technology — such as micro-OLED lenses with eye-tracking capabilities . Similarly, JMP Securities argued that the event "highlights Meta's AI tailwinds," which could "unlock additional advertising budgets with new chat-based customer service." Meanwhile, we expect adoption of Meta's Quest 3 hardware to grow. But the integration of the Meta AI assistant into that platform should ultimately make the glasses a more valuable product over time.

"You've got to take them at their word that they want to get another 25" basis points, said the asset management giant's CIO of global fixed income. BlackRock fixed income chief Rick Rieder thinks the Federal Reserve can stop raising interest rates, though it probably won't. The fed funds rate, used as a benchmark for many forms of short-term debt, currently is targeted in a range between 5.25%-5.50%. "I love commercial paper," Rieder said. Sept 27 (Reuters) - Hui Ka Yan, the chairman of China Evergrande Group (3333.HK), has been placed under police surveillance, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Hui was taken away by police earlier this month and is being monitored at a designated location, the report added, citing sources. It was not clear why Hui was placed under residential surveillance, Bloomberg News said, adding the move was a type of police action that falls short of formal detention or arrest and does not mean Hui will be charged with a crime. Reuters could not immediately verify the Bloomberg report. Earlier this month, police in southern China had detained some staff at Evergrande wealth management unit, suggesting a new investigation that could add to the property giant's woes.

Costco CEO Craig Jelinek told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday that his company is drawing more young people to its membership base. "We're seeing more younger people sign up, absolutely," Jelinek said. Jelinek said the younger demographic — some of whom may not have started their own families — may be purchasing less merchandise than older generations. But he stressed that Costco is not a "margin house" but a "volume house." According to Jelinek, Costco takes less than a 1% markup on the gold, and that the product drives more shoppers to the website.

Amazon is investing up to $4 billion in Anthropic and taking a minority stake in the artificial intelligence startup, the two companies said Monday. The investment underscores how Big Tech companies are pouring money into AI as they race to capitalize on the opportunities that the latest generation of the technology is set to fuel. Amazon and Anthropic said the deal is part of a broader collaboration to develop so-called foundation models, which underpin the generative AI systems that have captured global attention. Under the agreement, Anthropic is making Amazon its primary cloud computing service and using the online retail giant's custom chips as part of work to train and deploy its generative AI systems. Amazon is scrambling to catch up with rivals like Microsoft, which invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, followed by another multibillion-dollar investment at the start of year.

REUTERS/Michael Swensen Acquire Licensing RightsCHICAGO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers (UAW) members rallied against the Detroit Three automakers in multiple U.S. states on Thursday afternoon as Friday's deadline loomed for a threatened expansion of the union's strikes. The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). UAW workers want to end a tiered wage structure that they say has created a large gap between newer and older employees, forcing some to work two jobs to make ends meet. On Thursday morning, Fain posted a video message on X, formerly known as Twitter, to UAW members about the Friday deadline, showing scenes from several Hollywood movies with the characters saying "tick tock." Fain has said Detroit automakers have not shared their huge profits with workers while enriching executives and investors.

Microsoft submitted a new proposal to U.K. regulators for the takeover of American game publisher Activision Blizzard after its initial proposal was rejected. LONDON — The U.K.'s competition regulator on Friday said Microsoft 's restructured takeover proposal of Activision Blizzard , submitted in August, "opens the door to the deal being cleared." The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority had blocked the Redmond tech giant's initial $69 billion transaction, first put forward in January 2022, on concerns that it would restrict competition in the nascent cloud gaming sector. Critically, cloud gaming could eliminate the need for costly specialized consoles, allowing players to access the games on PCs, mobile phones and TVs. EU officials were first to clear the deal in May, after Microsoft offered concessions to the tune of royalty-free licenses to cloud gaming platforms to stream Activision games that a buyer has purchased.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - China Evergrande (3333.HK) said on Friday it would not be conducting the scheme meeting scheduled on Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 as the embattled property developer considers it necessary to reassess the terms of the proposed restructuring. Evergrande on March 22 announced plans for the restructuring of its $22.7 billion in offshore debt. But since then, sales of the group has not been as expected by the company, it said. With more than $300 billion in total liabilities, including offshore debt, Evergrande has been at the centre of a property debt crisis, in which multiple Chinese developers defaulted over the past year, forcing many to enter debt restructuring talks.

The report said Google's deliberations follow a standoff between the company and Broadcom over the price of the TPU chips. Broadcom, Google and Marvell did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Broadcom is seen as the second-biggest winner from the generative AI boom after Nvidia (NVDA.O). Google co-designs its AI chips with Broadcom and tech giant has already lined up the semiconductor firm for its sixth generation processor, the analysts said. That push has accelerated this year after prices surged for Nvidia's H100, the chip that powers most generative AI apps, to nearly double its original cost of $20,000.

REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ) is producing three models of iPhone 15 series this year, and the business has doubled in a year, Luxshare's chairwoman said on Thursday. Luxshare has increased the production types and numbers of Apple's iPhone products in recent years, Wang added. "Luxshare is continuing to expand its production capacity in China to meet Apple's needs," Wang said, adding the company built a new plant in Kunshan last year to support the development and mass production of iPhone. The new projections and the Fed's latest policy statement will be released at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT). Fed Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to hold a press conference half an hour later. With inflation slowing, that would allow interest rates to decline also. The last set of projections envisioned that the Fed's policy rate would fall by a percentage point in 2024, and by 1.2 percentage points in 2025 to end that year in the 3.25%-3.50% range. It hasn't happened so far, with economic growth through the first half of the year above the 1.8% rate that Fed officials view as the economy's non-inflationary trend, and continuing that way through the third quarter.
