An Iraqi judoka has recorded the first positive doping test of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said on Friday. A statement from the ITA said that Sajjad Sehen tested positive for the banned anabolic steroids metandienone and boldenone during out-of-competition anti-doping control in Paris on July 23. Katrina Adams was honored as the IOC’s Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champion for 2023. ‘Only just now getting here’Getting closer to this landmark of gender equality is “incredibly important,” Olympic weightlifter Jourdan Delacruz told CNN. “Just seeing all the love pour into women’s sport, it just opens up all these avenues. “If you don’t have female decision makers in the room that understand female athletes, it’s very hard to make decisions,” she said. And we know that without conscious, intentional action, to move towards gender equality, we consistently see regression.”

CNN —In the run up to the Paris Olympics, athletes have been stepping up their preparations in order to maintain their edge over competitors. But for Australia’s Matt Dawson, those preparations looked a little different this year, with the field hockey player opting to have part of his finger amputated in order to compete in the Games. The impact left the top of his finger almost entirely severed and had his Olympic dreams hanging in the balance. Dawson says he is "fortunate to have as much finger as possible" following the accident. Will Russell/Getty Images“It has obviously given the best chance and best opportunity to play here.

Welcome back to the Olympics, and a five-ringed circus of sport and security, national pride and international sponsorship. This summer’s Games begin in Paris this Friday, with an uncommon opening ceremony: athletes and acrobats floating along the Seine for as many spectators as the antiterror police will allow. France is still processing its recent snap legislative election, which nearly brought the far right to power. The ceremony will be all about France’s openness to the world. Not all the local spectators will approve of the message.

Paris CNN —French sprinter Sounkamba Sylla will now be taking part in the Opening Ceremony at this year’s Olympics, France’s sports minister told CNN, after the runner previously said she would not be allowed to because she wears a headscarf. “You are selected for the Olympic Games, organized in your country, but you can’t take part in the opening ceremony because you wear a scarf on your head,” Sylla posted on her private Instagram account Sunday, per Reuters. But in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said a solution has been found to allow Sylla to take part in Friday’s ceremony. “The issue is solved,” Oudéa-Castéra told Amanpour. The Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday and will be held along the River Seine, marking the first time that the ceremony has not taken place inside a stadium.

CNN —France’s Interior Ministry rejected around 5,000 security accreditation requests for Olympics volunteers and workers, with roughly 1,000 of those cases blocked due to suspicions of meddling or espionage. The Ministry outlined in a statement on Tuesday that it conducted “about a million” administrative investigations into various staff for the 2024 Paris Games. Of those checks, varying threats were identified, including meddling and espionage, convicted criminal records, illegal alien statuses, radical Islam, and ultra-right and ultra-left ideologies. The statement re-iterated that this will be the first Opening Ceremony taking place outside of a stadium for the Summer Games, creating significant security challenges. However, the ministry expressed its confidence, stating that it’s “now ready” after final rehearsals took place on Tuesday evening.

Racheal Kundananji was just 17 when she showed up to practice with her first-ever soccer team wearing track spikes. Until then, track and field was the only organized sport she had known in the Zambian copper-mining region where she grew up. Now she was sprinting around a bumpy patch of dirt that seemed more suitable for off-road biking than for soccer, displaying skills as rugged as the field itself. “She would run very fast,” said Risto Mupaka, a coach of the team, Konkola Queens. But, he added, “turning was a problem.”It didn’t take her long to figure out the game.
