Gone are the days of schoolyard crushes, and in their place are weekend dates and dinner table talks about my kids' relationships. I've genuinely liked the kids my teens have dated, so it's been sad seeing each of those relationships come to an end. I've seen both kids come out of their break-ups wiser and more sure of themselves, and that's taken the sting away just a bit. Terri Peters' kids recently started dating and have gone through breakups. It's also been rewarding to see my kids grow and learn as a result of each breakup.

In today’s edition, we report on how Vice President Kamala Harris’ search for a running mate is nearing the finish line. In case that wasn’t already clear from the vetting, the interviews and the obsessive media attention, consider the long — and still lengthening — list of ways one selection shaped decades of national politics. The pick influenced not just Obama’s electoral victories and the Obama administration but also every successive presidential election since then. And it could keep doing so for years, as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to make her choice Tuesday. And Harris’ running mate selection could anoint the Democratic Party’s next presidential favorite, potentially into the 2030s.

There weren't any specific reasons for most of the moves; we weren't a military family or moving due to work. As a parent, I focus on creating routines and stabilityWhen I became a parent, I read about the benefits of routines for children and the security that familiarity provides. As they have grown, we have built family rituals such as Friday Family Night, where we take turns deciding what to do as a group. These all add another layer of predictability to their lives and give our kids a sense of family identity and belonging. But I hope that the scaffolding of predictable routines and rituals as a foundation in their lives will give them the support they need to handle big changes when they arise.

Our mother might be white, he told us, but in this country, that fact was irrelevant to how we would be seen and treated. I cannot say exactly how I knew I was Black before my dad sat us down, but I knew. With my white family I was not white but part white. With my Black family and in the rest of America, I was Black. I wasn't prepared for the reality of my teaching salary or complicated nature of interest on student loans. I'm 35 now and have a long, winding history with my student debt, from income-driven repayment plans, to in-school deferments, to the SAVE plan, which an appeals court just blocked. Jan is the first person in Australia to be convicted of forced marriage since it was criminalized in 2013. Sakina Muhammad Jan was the first person convicted under Australia's forced marriage laws. Some of the measures borrow from forced-marriage laws in Britain, where hundreds of people take out protection orders each year to thwart an impending forced marriage. Other countries such as France, Canada and Germany also have specific laws against forced marriage. A month before Jan’s sentencing, the immigration minister circulated a directive specifically naming the crime of forced marriage as serious enough to warrant the removal of a visa.
