The nominators are required to see all eligible shows (there were 36 this season); the committee started with 60 people, but got smaller as members recused themselves because they missed a show or developed a conflict of interest.

Dr. Werner Spitz, a pathologist whose accounts of the traumatic last moments in some of the most sensational American deaths of the past 60 years figured in cases involving President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., O.J. Simpson, JonBenet Ramsey, Mary Jo Kopechne and many others, died on April 14 in St. Clair Shores, Mich., a suburb of Detroit. He died in hospice care after a brief illness, his son Dr. Daniel Spitz said. Dr. Spitz’s career of more than 60 years traced to the early days of modern forensic pathology, and his textbook on the topic remains a gold standard in the field. Examining the remains of homicide victims was the one thing that did not bore him, he said.

CNN —A Pennsylvania district attorney intends to appeal a judge’s decision last month to overturn the murder convictions of the so-called “Chester Trio” – three men who have spent nearly 25 years in prison for a crime they say they did not commit. In late March – over the objections of prosecutors who fought to have the convictions upheld – Delaware County Judge Mary Alice Brennan vacated the trio’s convictions and granted their request for a new trial. On Tuesday, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said he had, in fact, decided to appeal. CNN —Not long ago, senior citizens got the two biggest annual increases in their monthly Social Security checks that most had ever seen. While inflation has afflicted Americans of every age, senior citizens are often in a more difficult predicament because many live off fixed incomes. Many depend heavily on Social Security – some 42% of elderly women and 37% of elderly men rely on the monthly payments for at least half their income, according to the Social Security Administration. They aren’t wrong: Inflation has eaten away at 36% of Social Security benefits’ buying power since 2000, according to an analysis last year from The Senior Citizens League. The president needs these senior voters since polls also show his support among younger Americans has eroded since 2020.

CNN —Unprecedented, torrential rainfall plunged parts of the United Arab Emirates underwater last week, bringing life to a standstill in Dubai and elsewhere. The flooding shown is in the southernmost portion of Dubai, but the city’s highly urbanized central hub isn’t captured. The torrential rain was associated with a larger storm system last week traversing the Arabian Peninsula and moving across the Gulf of Oman. A warmer atmosphere is able to soak up more moisture like a towel and then ring it out in the form of torrential rainfall.

CNN —It was billed as a race that would be harder to win than the Olympic marathon gold in Paris and the London Marathon’s elite women’s race did not disappoint as reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won a hugely competitive race and set a new women’s-only world record. The field had a clutch of runners who were capable of breaking the record but it was Jepchirchir who made history, finishing ahead of Ethiopia’s world record holder Tigst Assefa in a sprint finish. I was not expecting to run a world record. I’m happy too to be in Paris for the Olympic marathon. Before the race a tribute was paid to world record holder and 2023 winner Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a traffic accident near his home in Kenya earlier this year.

Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton and Mary J. Blige are part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, along with Dave Matthews Band, Kool & the Gang, Foreigner and A Tribe Called Quest, the hall announced on Sunday. The latest crop of stars will officially join the pantheon in a ceremony on Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, where the hall’s affiliated museum is also located.
