Five countries have said they'll send armored vehicles to Ukraine. The US, Germany, France, and Sweden will provide armored fighting vehicles, and the UK will send tanks. Still, some big items long requested by Kyiv have been kept out of Western military aid packages. Sweden has joined the US, Germany, and France, which have said that they will send Bradley, Marder, and AMX-10 RC armored vehicles, respectively. Take a look at the five pieces of heavy armor that Western countries are sending to Ukraine.
Poland wants to send German-made battle tanks to Ukraine. Poland's prime minister said his country may just send tanks without Berlin's permission. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday that his country might send the German-made tanks to Kyiv without Berlin's approval on the transfer. Finland, an aspiring NATO member with Leopard tanks in its arsenal, has also indicated that it would send tanks as part of a coalition, but with German approval. NATO countries have put pressure on Germany to send or approve the transfer of Leopard tanks, but without any progress.
Intense fighting between Ukraine and Russia has been taking place around the eastern city of Bakhmut. Putin has been sending troops into some of Ukraine's most heavily defended areas, a former general said. Mick Ryan argues the Russian leader is trying to get a win before the war's one-year anniversary. Fighting between Ukraine and Russia has intensified in recent weeks around Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region. Ukrainian soldiers shelter in the woods along a road outside of the strategic city of Bakhmut on January 18, 2023 in Bakhmut, Ukraine.
Britain's defense ministry said the Kh-22 missile used in the attack is "notoriously inaccurate." The Kh-22 used in the attack is a Soviet-era supersonic anti-ship missile equipped with a 2,000-pound warhead. Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for Ukraine's air force, referred to it as an "aircraft carrier killer" and said it's designed to "destroy aircraft carrier groups at sea." "They're tough to intercept with traditional air defenses," he said, adding that "you almost need a ballistic missile defense interceptor." This method poses a challenge to air defense systems because radars focus on certain sectors of the sky, he explained.
The first batch of Russia's Poseidon torpedoes has been produced, state media reported. The Poseidon is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's six so-called "super weapons." A Russian Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drone is captured in an undated video grab provided by the Russian Defense Ministry. Poseidon torpedoes are considered to be one of Russia's six experimental "super weapons." TASS reported on Sunday that the Poseidon torpedoes are made for the Russian nuclear-power submarine Belgorod, which was launched in April 2019.
Scores of Russian troops were killed over the New Year holiday in a Ukrainian HIMARS strike. A string of Russian command failures allowed the deadly attack to happen. If they did, it is unclear if Russian troops were explicitly told not to use their phones and did anyways, or if these rules were actually enforced. It backfired though, as Russian milbloggers expressed anger with Russian military leadership after it came out that Russia's claims were made up. The Ukrainian strike on Makiivka is not the only time where Kyiv has been able to take advantage of Russian command failures during the nearly 11-month-long war, either.
However, the US only announced last week that it plans to send the armored vehicles to Ukraine. The problem is that the US only offered the vehicles to Kyiv last week, and they haven't even arrived yet. Konashenkov's false claims also appear in a September 4, 2022 report that was published to the Russian defense ministry's official Telegram page. "During the day of hostilities in this direction, the enemy lost 11 tanks, 17 infantry fighting vehicles, including four US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, 10 other armored combat vehicles, 5 pickup trucks with heavy machine guns and more than 150 military personnel," the defense ministry said. The US only announced last week that it would send Bradleys to Kyiv, along with NATO allies Germany and France, which are expected to deliver Marder infantry fighting vehicles and AMX-10 RC armored fighting vehicles.

The US military has received hundreds of new UFO reports in recent years, a new intelligence report reveals. Half of the new reported incidents are suspected to be balloons, drones, and random clutter. American officials have attributed a number of UFO incidents to foreign drones engaged in spying or airborne trash, The New York Times reported last October. Although the UAPs can potentially pose a safety hazard for aircraft, there have been no reported incidents between US planes and the UAPs. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a Thursday statement about the new ODNI analysis.
Russian forces are sending prisoners to absorb heavy Ukrainian fire around the war-torn city of Bakhmut. Moscow's applying a classic tactic of "trading individuals for bullets," a senior US military official said. The official added that Moscow's current tactic of "trading individuals for bullets" has been used on the battlefield throughout Russian history. "You're talking about thousands upon thousands of artillery rounds that have been delivered between both sides," the official said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a nightly address on Monday that Russia has concentrated its "greatest efforts" on Soledar.
US Navy forces recently found a fishing boat transporting over 2,000 rifles from Iran to Yemen. A team from the patrol coastal ship USS Chinook discovered and boarded the ship with support from fellow Cyclone-class patrol ship USS Monsoon and the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans. Navy forces found that the ship was carrying 2,116 AK-47 assault rifles. U.S. naval forces seized 2,116 AK-47 assault rifles from a fishing vessel transiting along a maritime route from Iran to Yemen. Russia said it killed hundreds of Ukrainian troops in revenge for a deadly strike on its forces. The Kremlin claimed over 600 Ukrainian troops died in a strike on Sunday in Kramatorsk. "As a result of a massive missile strike on these temporary bases of Ukrainian units, more than 600 Ukrainian servicemen were killed." Kyiv used a US-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) to strike Russian positions in the occupied city of Makiivka. The Kremlin said the attack killed nearly 90 of Moscow's troops in a rare disclosure of battlefield losses.

Hurts led six scoring drives and the Eagles never trailed the Giants (9-7-1), who had already sewn up the No. 6 seed and opted to rest quarterback Daniel Jones, Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley and other starters. Smith finished the regular season with 4,282 yards passing, surpassing Russell Wilson's team record of 4,219 set in 2016. Western-made armored vehicles are heading to Ukraine for the first time since Russia invaded. The US, Germany, and France all announced this week that they intend to send systems to Kyiv. The US plans to provide Bradley fighting vehicles — take a look at what these are. The White House announced Thursday that it intends to send Bradley fighting vehicles to Ukraine, joining other NATO countries that have also pledged to send armored vehicles. Washington's decision to send Bradleys to Ukraine came as German leadership revealed plans to transfer Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Kyiv and after French President Emmanuel Macron told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy he would provide Ukraine with AMX-10 RC armored fighting vehicles.
The newest Air Force fighter jet recently conducted a successful missile test. The test was a big step for the F-15EX Eagle II, a new aircraft slated to replace aging F-15s. As Defense News reported, the F-15EX Eagle II will also carry more missiles than the other fighter jets in the Air Force's inventory. The advanced F-15EX Eagle II is a two-seater aircraft capable of carrying up to 30,000 pounds of missiles and munitions. Following the recent test, the Air Force said that after testing wraps up, operational units will receive F-15EX fighters able to carry a full load of 12 missiles.
The US, Germany, and France are sending Ukraine Western-made armored vehicles for the first time. The White House announced in a joint press statement on Thursday that the US intends to provide Kyiv with Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, while Germany plans to send Marder infantry fighting vehicles. Earlier, both countries had hinted that Western armored vehicles could be included among future military aid. Zelenskyy did not specify which light vehicles he was referring to, though French politician Benjamin Haddad later confirmed that they are AMX-10 RC armored fighting vehicles. Ukraine has repeatedly requested heavy tanks and armored vehicles from Western countries.
Putin has ordered a 36-hour-long truce in Ukraine over the upcoming Orthodox Christmas holiday. The ceasefire will last from 12 p.m. local time on January 6 until 12 a.m. local time on January 7. His order, cited by the Kremlin, came after he spoke with the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Kremlin's announcement of the upcoming ceasefire came after calls from the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, to temporarily stop fighting so people could attend church services, state media TASS reported. Thus, ROC's statement about 'Christmas truce' is a cynical trap & an element of propaganda," Mykhailo Podolyak, a top advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said on Thursday before the ceasefire was formally announced by the Kremlin.
But the Kremlin's story is getting pushback, including from a decorated Russian war reporter. Battlefield cellphone use has been a problem for Russian troops, but other factors may have played a role here. Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces used a US-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) to deliver a devastating strike on Russian positions in the occupied Ukrainian city of Makiivka. Ukraine's military, meanwhile, offered a much higher figure and said as many as 400 Russian troops were killed with another 300 injured. He said Russian forces could have been detected by drones or Ukrainian troops could have been tipped off by an informant, CNN reported.
Russia is sending a warship armed with hypersonic missiles on a deployment that will take it into the Atlantic Ocean. Putin has boasted that the new Zircon hypersonic missile is unrivalled. Xinhua/ via Getty ImagesThe Admiral Gorshkov is setting sail armed with Zircon, sometimes spelled Tsirkon, hypersonic missiles — a relatively new weapon in Moscow's arsenal. Speaking Wednesday, Putin said the Zircon missile has "no analogues in any country in the world." Hypersonic missiles are highly maneuverable and fast, and they can fly along unpredictable flight paths, thus creating headaches for traditional air defenses.
Russia said a recent Ukrainian HIMARS strike in the occupied Donetsk region killed 63 of its soldiers. Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces used a US-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) to attack Russian positions in Makiivka, a city with a pre-war population of nearly 350,000 people in eastern Ukraine's occupied Donetsk region. Russia's defense ministry said on Monday that Ukrainian forces fired six rockets and that the strikes on Russian positions killed 63 soldiers, state news agency TASS reported. Videos of the aftermath of the deadly attack, which have been published on social media by top Ukrainian officials, showed a scene of rubble and smoke. Ukraine's HIMARS strike came as Russian forces fired a barrage of Iranian-made suicide drones into Ukraine over a two-day period, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Ukraine says it shot down all of the drones launched by Russia on December 31 and January 1. A Ukrainian air force spokesperson said Russia launched 84 Iranian-made suicide drones during that time. "Such results have never been achieved before," Yuriy Ignat said on Tuesday of Ukraine's air defense successes. He said that over the last four months, Kyiv has shot down 500 drones launched by Russia. It added that over 30 of the suicide drones launched by Russia were shot down over Kyiv.
When Russian forces invaded Ukraine in late February, Putin and other observers expected the country to crumble fast. Over 10 months later Ukraine still stands, and its forces has even liberated occupied lands. US officials have declared Putin's war efforts in Ukraine a "failure." That said, there is still no end in sight for the sight for this devastating conflict that has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties and left Ukrainian cities in ruins. The poor performance of the Russian military has surprised Putin and other observers, but it's only one of several unexpected twists in the past 10 months of war.
A Chinese J-11 fighter jet flew within 20 feet of a US military aircraft over the South China Sea. US Indo-Pacific Command said the Chinese "flew an unsafe maneuver" during the December 21 encounter. The US plane, an RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, had to take evasive action, the command said. A video of the incident released by the US military shows the Chinese J-11 jet flying alongside the RC-135. "We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law," the command added.
