Michael Dell's family office is merging with merchant bank BDT to form a new investment and advisory firm. Back in 2008, when he was still working at Goldman Sachs, Trott was publicly praised by Warren Buffett, whose distaste for M&A bankers — and Goldman Sachs — is notorious on Wall Street. "Byron is the rare investment banker who puts himself in his client's shoes," Buffett said in a letter to investors. The combination, the companies said on Thursday, "will create the preeminent advisory and investment firm serving the distinct needs of family- and founder-led business owners and strategic, long-term investors." Here's how Trott, a Midwest native, went from a small-town football player to an investment banker advising billionaires:

A Facebook whistleblower, two former U.S. defense secretaries, several past lawmakers and intelligence chiefs are forming a new group to address the harmful impacts social media can have on kids, communities and national security. The council said it aims to drive bipartisan conversation around tech in Washington, D.C., and across the country, elevate nonpartisan voices like parents and pediatricians, and advance effective solutions to reform social media. Haugen said the issues stemming from social media are truly bipartisan in nature, which could be made more clear by avoiding framing them as issues of content moderation. Many conservatives are skeptical of content moderation because they believe platforms can use it to censor certain viewpoints, though mainstream platforms have repeatedly denied they do so. Haugen said she sees content moderation as largely a "distraction from the real path forward, which is around product design, safety by design, transparency."

Chipotle is focusing on speedily serving a customer base it's growing through game-like rewards and TikTok engagement. Analyst Danilo Gargiulo began research coverage of the Mexican grill chain with an outperform rating and a price target of $2,000, implying an upside of 35%. Chipotle also has what he called an "addictive" rewards program where spending resembles a game with special rewards and challenges. They have generated 10% to 15% higher sales than traditional stores and have a higher share of digital sales, which are more efficient than in-person orders. But Chipotle is well positioned vs competitors because of a lack of debt, concentrated North American business and higher-income costumer base.

Next week's CPI reading is likely to be more consequential when it comes to any shift in Fed attitudes, she added.
Many companies that have shifted enterprise-technology tools into the cloud in recent years, in part as a cost-saving measure, say those investments have yet to pay off. Rather than run software and systems in their own hardware, commercial cloud users tap computing capabilities from providers such as Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp. They are also turning to multiple cloud providers, rather than relying on one cloud, for different systems and applications for different business areas. “Many first movers expected significant IT cost efficiency from their cloud investments,” said Barry Brunsman, a principal in KPMG’s CIO Advisory group. “You really do need to not just take it for granted that cloud is where you should head,” she said.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is moving one step closer to having a robot make its tortilla chips. The burrito chain said Tuesday that it will test "Chippy," an autonomous kitchen assistant made by Miso Robotics, next month in a restaurant in Fountain Valley, California. Chipotle has already tested Chippy's ability to make and season its tortilla chips with salt and lime at its headquarters' innovation hub in Irvine, California. Today, workers at Chipotle restaurants fry and season the chips, which can be time consuming. Restaurants and retailers have been testing robotics and automation to speed up operations and reduce menial tasks for workers.

Former Facebook employee-turned-whistleblower Frances Haugen on Thursday announced a new nonprofit with the goal of making social media healthier. Haugen has become a well-known figure since leaking tens of thousands of pages of internal documents and later revealing her identity on "60 Minutes" last year. Haugen has more recently advocated for specific laws in the U.S. and abroad that aim to make social media safer for kids. Haugen voiced her support for the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, which was recently signed into law by Gov.
