CNN —For the first time in Rwanda’s history, its health ministry is dealing with an outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – but unlike Ebola, there is no treatment or vaccines for Marburg, and it has a fatality rate of 88%. In addition to sending medical supplies, the World Health Organization said over the weekend that it is deploying a team of seven global experts in hemorrhagic disease to Rwanda who can provide guidance for public health experts on the ground. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that it is also sending experts to Rwanda to help support testing and contact-tracing efforts. There are no cases of Marburg in the United States, and the risk to Americans with this outbreak is low. Unlike in some other sub-Saharan African countries that have dealt with Marburg virus disease, Rwanda has a strong public health system, according to WHO.

Peggy Van de Plassche felt depressed and anxious until she started microdosing psilocybin three years ago. When I got a promotion, for example, I wouldn't feel excited, even though I'd been working toward it for a long time. You're taking three grams, and you're dancing! The stock market may be in the midst of one of its most remarkable turnarounds, but economists say reversing China’s economic downturn will require much more work. “Stimulating the stock market doesn’t really do much for the real economy in China. Organized retail crime "is not shoplifting," the agency says on its website, "and these crimes are not victimless." AdvertisementOne homeless woman in jail who pleaded guilty to felony organized retail theft tells me she steals out of desperation. Gavin Newsom sent $267 million to cities across California to increase arrests of organized retail crime — and the crackdown has escalated dramatically. Even the guy who says he coined the term "organized retail crime" can't say how much is lost to it. Gavin Newsom has provided California cities with $267 million and signed 10 new bills into law to bolster the prosecution of organized retail crime.

You will have a choice: Go find that site the same way you find anything else on your phone — or use a QR code. The new, new thing, the Times stresses, will be that CBS will run a QR code onscreen during the debate. AdvertisementYou are reading this on a website, so I'm confident you know how QR codes work. You probably did end up using QR codes more frequently during the pandemic, where they became part of the "touchless" experience in some consumer settings, notably restaurants. But like other pandemic experiences, it looks like the QR code spike has faded post-Covid, now that people are happy to do stuff like hold menus in their hands.

Power released its annual 2024 North America Airport Satisfaction Study, ranking the mega airports across North America. Mega airports are defined as those with 33 million or more passengers per year. The study was fielded from August 2023 through July 2024 and airports were measured based on a 1,000-point scale of overall customer satisfaction. Managing Director of Travel, Hospitality, Retail and Customer Service, tells CNBC Make It this year's study found that airports are swamped with travelers and that most airports have regained their passenger volumes from before the covid-19 pandemic. "There seems to be no slack in demand and airports are, in general, doing a little bit of a better job of making people satisfied, mostly with food and beverage," he says.

While analysts don’t track pet travel outlays specifically, some airlines and hotels appear eager to welcome more furry guests — aware that many visitors will pay a premium for it. Some pet owners say they wouldn’t make use of it anyway. Hosts on both platforms set their own pet fees. Angela Weiss | AFP | Getty ImagesAs she unveiled her most detailed economic plan yet this week, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris pledged to fight price gouging in order to rein in voters' grocery costs. Although Harris released more detail Wednesday as part of her 82-page economic plan, it's still unclear what price hikes her administration would see as illegal "price gouging." Generally, Republicans support fewer economic regulations, although Trump has suggested limiting food imports as a way to lower grocery prices. What is price gouging? Thirty-seven U.S. states already have laws that forbid price gouging in emergencies.

Instead, US officials now focus on testing the contents of Americans’ wastewater to keep tabs on the virus. To identify virus levels and larger trends, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relies on a large network of sampling sites at wastewater treatment facilities across the country. Viral levels vary over time and by location. Samples are taken from sampling sites around the United States that meet criteria to sufficiently anonymize the data. Wastewater data also helps local public health agencies to track new Covid variants and other infectious diseases, such as RSV and mpox.
