Paris/London CNN —Two of the largest retail chains in France have announced they will forego all profit on fuel sales, yielding to government pressure to sell gasoline and diesel at cost. “From September 29, the 750 service stations of Leclerc hypermarkets will be selling petrol ‘at cost price’ every day. This, of course, means with no profit,” Michel-Edouard Leclerc, president of the E. Leclerc group, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, Tuesday. Making zero or very little profit on fuel sales may be new for French retailers but their US counterparts have been doing it for years. Gasoline sales at the warehouse clubs are an important part of their business and draw customers inside.

CNBC's Jim Cramer touted the strength of Costco 's (COST) business on Wednesday, the morning after the membership-based retailer reported solid quarterly results. If you like this story, sign up for Jim Cramer's Top 10 Morning Thoughts on the Market email newsletter for free. Shares of Costco rose more than 1.5% Wednesday apiece, pushing the stock's year-to-date gains to around 23%. However, the initial reaction to Costco's after-the-bell earnings report — which topped Wall Street's sales and profit expectations — was somewhat sour. Some of the disappointment may stem from the fact Costco "didn't give you a special dividend" and "'didn't raise prices for members," Cramer said.

The average ticket value was down 4.5% in the US, which its CFO attributed to lower sales of higher-value non-food discretionary items. In the previous quarter, the average ticket size had been down 3.5% compared to the same period in 2022. During that quarter, these items made up 55% of e-commerce sales but just 8% of in-warehouse sales, Galanti said during its earnings call in May. Audio product sales were up "a little" and TV sales were up but the average price point had come down, he said. From July to August, the average price of some items including tomatoes, eggs, cheese, rice, cereal, and bread declined, the data shows.

China's markets will also be disrupted by Golden Week holidays next week. Ten-year Treasury yields hit another 16-year high at 4.56% on Tuesday before dialling back a bit on Wednesday, with 10-year real yields hitting 14-year peaks at 2.24%. Risk spreads in junk bond and overseas sovereign bond markets are also creeping higher again, with exchange-traded U.S. junk bond funds hitting their lowest since May and Italy's government bond yield premium over Germany widening too. Worrying for many investors this week has been how bond yields have climbed despite weaker economic signals and how stock and bond losses are correlating again. World markets were more mixed, with China's bourses managing some gains ahead of the big holiday week.

Costco CEO Craig Jelinek told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday that his company is drawing more young people to its membership base. "We're seeing more younger people sign up, absolutely," Jelinek said. Jelinek said the younger demographic — some of whom may not have started their own families — may be purchasing less merchandise than older generations. But he stressed that Costco is not a "margin house" but a "volume house." According to Jelinek, Costco takes less than a 1% markup on the gold, and that the product drives more shoppers to the website.

Costco and Target issued contrasting statements Tuesday about how retail crime is affecting them. Target said it would close 9 stores, citing crime – Costco said theft was "not a big issue for us." It also noted that theft incidents seem to be getting increasingly violent. Costco's success in skirting the impact of retail theft comes down to several operational factors that seem to run counter to Target's approach to business. AdvertisementAdvertisementAlthough Costco and Target are reporting almost opposite experiences with retail theft, the bigger picture resists superlatives.

About a third of all M&A deals in the first half of 2023 were technology deals, and a lot of that was related to AI, said Berlin. The success of these deals mean more M&A is likely on the horizon, said Dan Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush. Costco members now have access to $29 online health care visitsCostco is known for its giant tubs of mac and cheese, cheap hotdogs and more-for-less warehouse deals. The retailer is offering the new service in partnership with Sesame, a direct-to-consumer health care marketplace that connects medical providers nationwide with consumers. Costco is among several retailers, including Amazon, CVS and Walgreens, who are directly providing health care to customers as the demand booms for urgent care access outside of a traditional hospital setting.

Federal student loan payments are coming back in October and a trio of stocks are set to shine as borrowers cut their spending, according to Jefferies. Payments on federal student loans had been paused since March 2020 as part of a package of Covid-era relief measures. A recent poll of about 630 U.S. consumers with student loan debt found that the majority expect to pay $500 or less each month, Jefferies found. Walmart beat Wall Street's estimates for sales and earnings in its fiscal second quarter and hiked its full-year earnings forecast. Remote workers are doing anything but work in the afternoons. Elena Noviello/Getty ImagesThere are few topics in corporate America as polarizing as remote work. AdvertisementAdvertisementLengthy, expensive office leases might also discourage companies from embracing remote work. As Aki's story points out, that type of rationale from larger companies has created an opportunity for those willing to support remote work. A company's commitment to remote work might not be forever, even if employees view it that way.
