☆ Intel faces headwinds in China as trade body calls for security probe

Intel products sold in China have been recommended for a security review by local officials who allege that the U.S. chipmaker poses "serious risks" to national security. CSAC further accused Intel of using remote management features to surveil users while covertly installing backdoors and of failing to address defects reported by users. Daniel Newman, CEO of The Futurum Group, noted the security review comes amid increased tensions between China and the U.S. in regard to chip controls and AI leadership. China accounted for 27.4% of Intel's revenue in 2023, making it vital to the company's bottom line at a time its stock is struggling following poor earnings and job cuts. However, under U.S. chip policy, the company has been restricted from exporting some of its most advanced products to Chinese clients.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Biden administration at least in the short term to enforce its latest attempt to curb climate-harming carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants that contribute to climate change. The Supreme Court is often skeptical of major agency actions but it has bucked that reputation in recent weeks. Under the proposed rule, the EPA wants to require “carbon capture,” a technique that uses solvents to remove carbon dioxide from a power plant’s emissions. The appeals court in July declined to block the regulation, saying the major questions doctrine did not apply on this occasion. LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The weight-loss treatment firm and creator of Zepbound announced Monday that it would commit £279 million ($364 million) to help tackle Britain’s significant health challenges — including obesity. Within that, the five-year trial, conducted in collaboration with Health Innovation Manchester, will also explore how weight-loss drugs impact “participants’ employment status and sick days from work,” the company said in a news release. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.
