They point to recent rises in overdoses and disorder like public drug use in Oregon, which decriminalized small amounts of drug possession in 2021, and in Portugal, which decriminalized drug possession in 2001 and was the model for Oregon’s law. People tend to assume that arrests for possession result in offers of treatment, and that treatment is available for anyone in jail who wants help. "Dune: Part Two" has departed the 2023 box office slate amid dual Hollywood labor strikes that threaten its ability to market to the public. Box office analysts have long anticipated that the "Dune" sequel would ditch its 2023 release date amid the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes. Postponing "Dune: Part Two" might help bolster its box office gains in 2024, but will bite a chunk out of Warner Bros. After the stunning success of "Barbie," and with doubts growing about December's "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom," "Dune: Part Two" was an important 2023 release for the studio and expected to perform well with audiences. Its predecessor excelled at the box office during the pandemic despite being a day-and-date release on streaming service HBO Max (now just called Max).

The sustained inflationary pressure, driven by a lira drop and tax hikes, comes as President Tayyip Erdogan's new finance minister and central bank chief orchestrate a policy U-turn including interest rate hikes that are expected to slow domestic demand. But in the meantime the U-turn has hammered the currency and left authorities asking already-stretched households for patience. In July, consumer prices soared nearly 10% sequentially due to tax hikes and a lira crash. This month, forecasts by five economists show them rising between 5.5% and 8.5%, with fallout from mid-July tax hikes lagging into August. After years of divergence with market expectations, the central bank matched those last month when it raised its end-2023 annual inflation forecast to 58.0% from a previous 22.3%.

Political violence in polarized U.S. at its worst since 1970s

Three academics who reviewed the cases say they add to growing evidence that America is grappling with the biggest and most sustained increase in political violence since the 1970s. Political violence surged for nearly a decade starting in the late-1960s – 1970 alone saw more than 450 cases, LaFree said. In contrast, much of today’s political violence is aimed at people – and most of the deadly outbursts tracked by Reuters have come from the right. “Political warfare”There’s no official tally of how many Americans die each year from political violence. Most of the fatal political violence identified by Reuters was carried out by people who embraced far-right views.

Yet what we consider theatrical minimalism today used to be standard: Greek tragedies barely had sets; the major visual element in Elizabethan theater was the performance space itself. This changed in the latter half of the 17th century as indoor staging became the norm. As lighting technology improved over the next 200 years, among other aspects, productions grew increasingly ornate and complex. Throughout the 20th century, many attempted to bring minimalism back: Orson Welles and John Houseman thrilled audiences with a scenery-free “Dr. “There’s no visual noise to take your eye off what you’re meant to be focusing on,” Gilmour says of her recent production.

Opinion | How to Save American Theater

To the Editor:Re “American Theater Is Imploding Before Our Eyes,” by Isaac Butler (Opinion guest essay, nytimes.com, July 19):One of the main reasons that nonprofit theaters are closing is the increasingly political nature of the plays they are presenting. A sizable swath of the country with a different viewpoint has rejected today’s theater, and now the subscribers previously committed to supporting theaters are doing the same. While more federal funding sounds nice, it continues the intrusion of politics into the theater. To the Editor:Having been at the helm of a nonprofit theater for over 12 years, we know the constant struggle that Isaac Butler describes. Rising costs, uncertain audiences and fickle donors are but a fraction of the challenges that theater companies face every day.

ISTANBUL, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Turkey's banking watchdog has stopped allowing credit card payments by instalment for foreign travel, such as flights, travel agency fees and accommodation, in a step seen dealing a blow to foreign travel operators. The move, which hit airline shares and was seen as curbing foreign currency outflows, was one of two measures announced by the BDDK watchdog late on Monday, which it said were among coordinated steps to strengthen financial stability. "The logic (of the step) is 'citizens shouldn't go abroad and spend foreign currency'," he said, adding that the foreign travel sector was also being hit by increasing difficulties faced by Turks in securing tourist visas. The credit card move also had an impact on airline share prices, with Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) dipping 1.3% and the airline Pegasus (PGSUS.IS) dropping 2.3%.
