The Fed will likely spark more pain for the US economy, according to "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary. He predicted the Fed will push interest rates to 6% in a bid to lower inflation. Central bankers have raised interest rates aggressively over the past 18 months to control inflation, with rates now at their highest level since 2001. Oil prices have stuck close to a 10-month high, with Brent crude the international benchmark, trading around $94 a barrel on Friday while West Texas Intermediate crude traded around $91 a barrel..O'Leary blamed high oil prices on a systemic shortage of crude production. Forecasters have warned that oil prices could go even higher through the end of the year as supply cuts from producers in OPEC+ could deepen.

Rupee set to rally on India's inclusion in JPMorgan bond index

Non-deliverable forwards indicate the rupee will open at around 82.80-82.82 to the U.S. dollar, compared with 83.09 in the previous session. Indian government bonds will be included in the Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets index and the index suite, JPMorgan said on Friday. Inclusion will start on June 28, 2024, and extend over 10 months with 1% increments on its index weighting. India's inclusion in the JPMorgan index increases the probability of inclusion into the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Bonds Index, which, IDFC First Bank estimates, could lead to additional inflows of $15 billion to $20 billion. The dollar index reached 105.74 on Thursday, the highest in over six months.

Get ready for higher energy costs, JPMorgan said Friday, warning that the latest surge in oil prices may have a lot further to run. The recent uptick in oil prices , sparked by output cuts from OPEC and higher demand, has fueled inflationary fears and heightened concern that interest rates may stay at today's lofty levels for longer. Consumer prices in August, for example, showed a 0.6% month-over-month increase, the largest monthly gain of the year, partly owing to uptick in energy prices. Brent prices rose another 1% Friday to trade around $94 a barrel as a fuel export ban from Russia reignited global supply fears. Amid this looming energy "supercycle," JPMorgan sees a positive outlook for global energy producers and named Shell , Baker Hughes and Exxon Mobil among its best ideas.

US stocks ticked higher Friday but were on track for a losing week. Oil prices and bond yields surged during the week, with Brent crude up 0.75% Friday. Policymakers made no rate adjustment Wednesday, but could make one more hike before year's end. The major indexes are coming off three consecutive days of losses and remain on track to finish the week in the red as bond yields jump on hawkish Federal Reserve commentary and surging oil prices. After policymakers indicated that rates could remain higher for longer into 2024, bond yields surged, with the 10-year Treasury hitting 4.49%, its highest level since 2007.

London CNN —Russia’s decision to ban diesel exports to most countries could not have come at a worse time for Europe. But the EU still needs a steady flow of Russian diesel to global markets to keep prices stable. The Russian government announced the curbs — which also apply to gasoline — Thursday, saying they were aimed at stabilizing domestic fuel prices. Diesel is Europe’s economic workhorse, powering the majority of vans and trucks ferrying goods and raw materials round the continent. Before Europe imposed its import ban, Russia supplied 40% of the country’s diesel.

When looking for a stock that pays a higher dividend than Treasury yields, investors don't have too many choices these days. Dividend stocks, on the other hand, are getting harder to find as companies hold on to their cash amid concerns about the economy. To find stocks that pay dividends higher than the 10-year Treasury yield, CNBC used the new CNBC Pro Stock Screener tool to search for names with yields higher than 4.5%. Pioneer Natural Resources has the highest dividend yield at 7.2%, as well as a debt-to-equity ratio of 24.2%. Lastly, Best Buy has a 5.2% dividend yield and 40.9% debt-to-equity ratio.

Expect another rate increase by the Fed at its next meeting due to a "problematic" surge in oil prices, billionaire investor Jeff Gundlach said. "I think the probability of rate hikes is higher than what I thought before this oil spike happened," Gundlach said. Oil prices have climbed past $90 a barrel after Saudi Arabia and Russia slashed production. "So I think the chance of a rate hike is higher because these oil prices are going to be a real problem," Gundlach said. Surging oil prices now threaten to spark a resurgence of US inflation, which the Fed has tried so hard to quell.

London CNN —Central bankers have had to climb a metaphoric mountain over the past two years in the battle to control runaway inflation. The announcement came just hours after Switzerland’s central bank kept rates unchanged and a day after the US Federal Reserve did the same, holding its key lending rate in the range of 5.25% to 5.5%. “Central banks think they have raised interest rates enough to bring inflation down to their 2% targets in a couple of years’ time,” Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, told CNN. Key interest rates are now at levels that, if “maintained for a sufficiently long duration, will make a substantial contribution” to reducing inflation to its 2% target, the central bank said. “By this time next year, we anticipate that 21 out of the world’s 30 major central banks will be cutting interest rates.”

Some believe a tight oil market and resilient U.S. growth will keep energy stocks rising for the rest of 2023. Bullish investors argue that energy stocks are still cheap by historical standards - and far less richly valued than other areas of the market. The energy sector currently trades at a forward price to earnings ratio of 12.2, well below its historical median forward P/E of 15.3, according to LSEG Datastream. Yet in Europe, sterling came under pressure after data showed Britain's high inflation rate fell unexpectedly in August, prompting speculation that the Bank of England could pause its historic run of interest rate hikes as soon as Thursday. Two-year Treasury yields were down 3.5 basis points in London trade at 5.07%, having risen sharply on Tuesday, when five- and 10-year Treasury yields reached 16-year highs. World stock markets were edging higher ahead of the Fed rate decision. UK gilt yields fell sharply as investors slashed bets for a rate hike on Thursday, with two-year yields last down over 14 bps at 4.85% . Investors are awaiting the Fed's interest rate decision at 1800 GMT on Wednesday to assess the outlook for economic growth and fuel demand. The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates on hold, but the focus will be on its projected policy path, which is unclear. Goldman Sachs said it expects the Bank of England to keep interest rates unchanged on Thursday as a result of the fall.

REUTERS/Bing Guan/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - U.S. crude stocks fell last week, driven by strong crude oil exports, while gasoline and diesel inventories drew down as refiners began annual autumn maintenance, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. Crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, delivery hub (USOICC=ECI) fell by 2.1 million barrels in the last week, EIA said, its lowest since July 2022. The drop in inventories was driven by a 2,000 barrel per day climb in crude oil exports, the EIA data showed. Net U.S. crude imports (USOICI=ECI) fell by 3.04 million barrels per day, EIA said. Refinery crude runs (USOICR=ECI) fell by 496,000 barrels per day in the last week, EIA said, while refinery utilization rates (USOIRU=ECI) fell by 1.8 percentage points in the week.

Trade data for Japan showed exports fell 0.8% last month from a year ago, marking the second straight month of declines, as exports to China lagged, dropping 11%. Markets have see-sawed for weeks on uncertainty about whether the Fed is done with its market-shaking hikes to interest rates. The Fed began its latest meeting on interest rates Tuesday, with an announcement scheduled for Wednesday.
