"Our patients expect that medical devices are safe and of highest quality. A Commission source said the extension will require an amendment to the law. Under the new law, all medical devices, from implants and prosthetics to blood glucose meters and pacemakers sold in the EU must be re-certified by May 2024. We are already seeing shortages of some essential medical devices, and in many cases alternative devices are missing," Christiaan Keijzer, president of the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), told Reuters. The Commission said there are about 23,000 certificates under the old system which will expire by May 2024 without an extension.
An experimental treatment for advanced melanoma is poised to be the next major advance in cancer treatment, experts say. Those who got TIL therapy had a 50% reduction in disease progression and death, compared to those who were treated with ipilimumab, the study found. Bruce Hawley and his wife, Laurie, celebrated their third wedding anniversary in 2021 in Vancouver, several years after his TIL therapy. "The chemotherapy knocks down the immune cells to make space for the TIL cells going in," Hwu said. The hope is that TIL therapy will also be used for other solid cancers, not just melanoma, Rosenberg said.

Crisis pregnancy centers outnumber abortion clinics in the US. When she got to The Keim Center in Virginia Beach, it didn't look or smell like a medical clinic — it was too nice, too inviting. Unbeknownst to her, Estefanía had walked into one of the 2,000 crisis pregnancy centers, or CPCs, in the US. "Most of the folks that work in crisis pregnancy centers are people that are on a mission to end abortion." Researchers from Middlebury College have estimated that the extinction of national abortion rights means the number of people living closer to CPCs than abortion clinics will double, and CPCs will outnumber abortion clinics 1-to-5.
But for Eric and many other trans people, the war has also made it much more difficult to be who they are. HRT can be used by trans women, trans men and non-binary people to make their physical appearance more aligned with their gender identity. Anastasiia Yeva Domani is the co-founder of Cohort, a Ukrainian trans rights group. While trans Ukrainians still experience negative attitudes in some spaces, for example in shelters housing families, according to COHORT, the discriminatory Russian rhetoric has pushed more Ukrainians to speak up. The group launched a hotline for LGBTQ+ Ukrainians and opened an LGBTQ+ friendly shelter.

“Do you see the puckering around this white mass?” The radiologist pointed to a white blur on the monochrome scan. To my untrained eye, it resembled a comet throwing out plumes of dust in the blackness of space. “That’s a tell-tale sign.”I had just turned 40, and until this point I had never even had a mammogram. Now I was being told I had breast cancer.

REUTERS/Kim Kyung-HoonTOKYO, Nov 30 (Reuters) - A Japanese biotech firm says it has developed the world's first early screening test for pancreatic cancer, using the powerful noses of tiny worms. Hirotsu Bio Science this month launched its N-NOSE plus Pancreas test, marketing directly to consumers in Japan and with aims to bring the test to the United States by 2023. In the latest version, the company tweaked the genetic code of the nematodes so that they would swim away from pancreatic cancer samples. Hirotsu Bio started with pancreatic cancer due to its difficulty in diagnosis and speed of progression. The pancreas test kit costs up to 70,000 yen ($505), comparatively expensive for a diagnostic test in Japan, which has a nationalised health care system and fixed prices for drugs and procedures.
Some 83 percent of babies in the United States start out on breast milk, but by 6 months, just 56 percent are breastfed — and at that stage, only a quarter drink breast milk exclusively, as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends. To find out what it takes to breastfeed a baby, The New York Times followed four mothers for a day as they nursed, pumped and supplemented their milk with formula. Dr. Ma returned to work four weeks after her oldest daughter’s birth and two weeks after her second arrived. While performing long operations, she leaked breast milk under her surgical gown. Now her hours are more reasonable, and she has an office with a door that locks — but Dr. Ma still feels relentless pressure to keep up.
Executives at Burger King and McDonald's praised sales growth driven by chicken menu items. On November 15, Popeyes released its new Blackened Chicken Sandwich, which is not breaded and is seasoned with Cajun and Creole spices. The sandwich chain is explicitly promoting the new sandwich as "reigniting the chicken sandwich wars," which started with the 2019 release of the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich. The chain further took advantage of reduced chicken prices with a BOGO chicken sandwich deal over Black Friday weekend. Chicken, including the spicy chicken sandwich and McNuggets, has been a "strong growth driver" for McDonald's, CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors in October.
In the dark, Ukrainian restaurants serve customers by candlelight with special 'blackout menus'. Kyiv-based restaurant manager Dmytro Tkachenko told Insider: "We can adapt to anything." A post shared by Under Wonder (@underwonder.kyiv)Manager Dmytro Tkachenko told Insider it has designed a reduced — but still "exquisite" — array of dishes that can be prepared without electricity. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Sleep Research Society and other medical groups have advocated for ending the practice, calling for the adoption of a permanent standard time that would not involve shifting forward each spring and falling back each autumn. She authored a paper, published in September in the journal Sleep, detailing the potential health benefits of adopting a permanent standard time. Now, some sleep researchers worry about the potential effects that continuing to change standard time twice each year may have on sleep health inequities. “Fortunately, sleep health is largely modifiable.”As for the inequities seen in sleep health, it’s not that White adults don’t also experience a lack of sleep and its health consequences – but people of color appear to disproportionately experience them more, and that’s believed to be largely due to social systems in the United States. Improving sleep health has been a national objective in the federal government’s past two Healthy People programs, noted Caraballo-Cordovez, who is not involved in the programs.

Three years ago, Rhonda Terrell was diagnosed with an aggressive form of uterine cancer that has since spread to her abdomen and liver. “And I want to hold them accountable because I have granddaughters.”Bernadette Gordon, who used chemical relaxers from around 1983 to 2015, believes they caused her to develop breast and uterine cancer. In 2021, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and underwent a hysterectomy, followed by six months of chemotherapy and radiation. There was never anything on the products' packaging, they said and their lawsuits allege, indicating that normal use of the products could cause them to develop uterine fibroids or breast or uterine cancer. “This study is the first to show a possible link between frequent use of hair straightening products and uterine cancer,” she said.

The decrease in diagnoses "does not mean these cancers are suddenly less common," said study leader Allison Oakes of data analytics company Trilliant Health in Brentwood, Tennessee. By the end of 2021, screening rates had rebounded but were still below pre-pandemic levels, researchers reported in JAMA Oncology. Ongoing analysis of 2022 data suggests screening rates in 2022 are unlikely to have improved dramatically, Oakes said. The issue appears to go beyond cancer testing, the study found. "Not only are people missing their annual cancer screenings, but they are using less primary care," Oakes said.
Mannequins and mementos are hitching a ride aboard NASA's Orion capsule — without people. Fitted with more than 5600 sensors, Zohar and Helga will measure the amount of radiation astronauts could be exposed to in future missions. "When it comes to biological effects, different organs have different susceptibility to space radiation. Shaun, of British TV show "Shaun the Sheep" fame, is flying aboard the Artemis I mission in plush doll form. Snoopy will ride in the Orion capsule and serve as a zero gravity indicator.
Yet chicken prices fell in October. It may seem counterintuitive that egg and chicken prices moved in opposite directions. The last bout was in 2015, when a record 50.5 million birds were impacted, the CDC said. Elevated egg prices "could last into the first quarter of 2023," Lapp said. 'Broilers' are less affected by flu than 'layers'Meanwhile, chicken prices retreated in October, falling by 1.3% during the month.
A 10-year-old boy was suspended from his Florida elementary school and faces a charge of misdemeanor battery after he was accused of inappropriately touching a school counselor during a hug, an allegation his family denies. NBC News is also not naming the counselor because she invoked Marsy’s Law, which in Florida allows alleged crime victims to remain anonymous. They further said the school never properly investigated the incident and suspended the child for 10 school days despite his denying the claims. The 10-year-old’s teacher was in the room during the alleged incident but did not witness what happened, according to the police report and suspension letter. The incident has left the child fearful about returning to school, his grandmother said.
A woman had cancer 5 times before she turned 36, the first time when she was two. It shows the importance of genetic testing in families where cancer is common, a study author said. In total the woman, who wasn't named, developed 12 different tumors, five of which were cancerous and seven of which were benign. The woman had her first cancer at age two, a tumor in which was treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Fans run social media accounts dedicated to tracking discontinued products at Trader Joe’s, and others blog about long-lost items at Costco. “We understand that it can be disappointing — devastating, even,” Trader Joe’s says on its “discontinued product feedback” contact page for customers. There are several reasons Trader Joe’s, Costco (COST) and other stores suddenly stop selling customer favorites. Also, for stores like Costco and Trader Joe’s, discontinuing items can reinforce the treasure hunt-like appeal of these stores. One major factor: It’s difficult to get shelf space inside Trader Joe’s and Costco and stay there.

Some social media users are misrepresenting a 2020 report in a British newspaper on non-COVID deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming it is from 2022, as well as falsely implying the headline concerns vaccines. Users heavily imply the deaths are due to COVID-19 vaccines. However, the newspaper article is from Oct. 20, 2020 – well before Britain’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout, which began in December 2020 (here). The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), the UK’s independent newspaper regulator, said the article only referred to the displacement of deaths from hospitals to people’s homes on continuation on page 6 of the newspaper. The headline is from 2020 and pre-dates COVID-19 vaccine rollouts.
