Hawaii Army National Guard CH47 Chinook helicopters perform aerial water bucket drops on the island of Maui to assist with fight of wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, August 9, 2023. An out-of-control wildfire that began along a major Central Maui highway burns Thursday July 11, 2019, in Maui, Hawaii. “Especially when you have severe drought conditions like we have.”Despite these growing dangers, Hawaii state budgets for fire management have not kept pace with worsening conditions, according to the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, a nonprofit. Hawaii is hardly unique: As climate change is exacerbating natural disasters, state officials across the country are also struggling to respond to new threats. And it’s unclear how significantly additional preparedness and mitigation efforts could have reduced the destruction of a blaze with the intensity and speed of the Lahaina wildfire.

A GOP divide in Iowa over Trump -- and over the truth

Mudd does not dispute this but says he would have more confidence if states followed the same procedures. “Nothing about that deal is the American way, I don’t think,” Mudd Sr. says of the latest Trump indictment. And it vividly captures the country’s red state-blue state divide, which includes what you think of Trump and where you get your news. Taylor supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 caucuses, but voted for Trump in November 2016 and again in 2020. Shopping around is an Iowa tradition, but both understand that a splintered field eventually helps Trump, as it did in 2016.

“In some ways, the challenges are greater than I anticipated,” Iger told CNBC in a revealing interview last month. But under Iger 2.0, Disney has cultivated even more headaches for itself, including a morale crisis sparked by one surprisingly candid interview with CNBC on July 13. Naturally, the comments set off alarms within Disney General Entertainment Content, the division that operates Disney’s broadcast and cable networks. A few days after the Faber interview, Iger tried to smooth things over at an off-site meeting with senior managers. Not only did this help to slow down skyrocketing housing costs, it inspired a bipartisan, nationwide expansion of the policy. Home prices in Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, doubled between 2009 and 2016 and prices across the rest of the country followed close behind. "A typical New Zealand city looks a lot like a typical US city," Gray said. There are three models of housing construction in US cities right now, Gray said. The stablecoin, PayPal USD, is fully backed by the US dollar and is “designed to reduce friction” for payments within virtual spaces and provide faster, cheaper transfers of money across borders. But PayPal is betting on a future in which digital currency is more mainstream and merchants may request payment in stablecoins to avoid credit card processing fees. In May 2022, the “algorithmic” stablecoin TerraUSD collapsed when the crypto token backing it, Luna, collapsed. The value of PayPal USD, or PYUSD, doesn’t rely on a complex algorithm the way Terra did. In other words: every PayPal USD should be worth $1.00, no matter what.

Gen Z fashion trends are sustainable, intentional, and just a little bit silly and ugly. "Wrong shoe theory" and Kramercore are part of a reaction to economic and climate turmoil. It's called "wrong shoe theory," and it's yet another Gen Z fashion moment that might seem counterintuitive at first. At the same time, as with many of the challenges that Gen Z encounters, there's an eye toward sustainability and looming climate doom. It's no wonder, then, that Gen Z is embracing another similarly kitschy and thriftable aesthetic: Kramercore.

REUTERS/Christinne Muschi/File PhotoMONTREAL, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Canada's Bombardier Inc (BBDb.TO) on Thursday reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and higher revenue despite supply chain pressures, helped by demand for flying and maintaining private planes. The Montreal-headquartered business jet maker reported a second-quarter profit of $10 million from continuing operations, compared with a loss of $109 million a year earlier. CEO Eric Martel told analysts that despite "pressure points" such as smaller suppliers, the supply chain is improving and will "remain a key area of focus for the foreseeable quarters". Last month, Gulfstream jet maker Textron Inc (TXT.N) raised its full-year profit forecast on strong jet pricing. On a per share basis, quarterly adjusted profit was 72 cents, compared with a loss of 48 cents a year earlier.

The average CEO compensation among S&P 500 companies last year was $16.7 million — the second-highest level of executive pay ever, according to the group’s annual Executive Paywatch report. (2021 was the highest at $$18.3 million)CEO pay fell last year compared to the previous year, said Brandon Rees, the AFL-CIO’s deputy director of corporations and capital markets. To put that $16.7 million in context: Assuming a 45-year career at an average pay of $75,200, regular employees would need to work more than five lifetimes to make what the average CEO receives in a single year. Meanwhile, US workers’ real hourly wages fell in 2022 for the second year in a row by 1.6% after adjusting for inflation, the executive pay report found. The bot battleAmong the biggest concerns raised in the latest pay report is the way artificial intelligence is poised to benefit executives more than their employees.

CNN —A husband and wife, whose eccentricities and alleged crimes earned them the nickname “Bitcoin Bonnie and Clyde,” pleaded guilty to orchestrating a $4.5 billion money-laundering scheme linked to the 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex. Until Thursday’s hearing in Washington, DC, federal court, neither Morgan nor Lichtenstein had been directly implicated in the hacking of Hong Kong-based crypto exchange Bitfinex. “Lichtenstein then took steps to cover his tracks” and enlisted his wife’s help in laundering the funds, prosecutors said. Lichtenstein pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, according to a press release from the Justice Department. Morgan pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, each of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

“The repeated debt-limit political standoffs and last-minute resolutions have eroded confidence in fiscal management,” Fitch said in its report. Even though the US avoided a default on its debt this year, Fitch Ratings cited a 'steady deterioration in standards of governance' in dowgrading the nation's credit. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesThe message from Fitch this week, and S&P more than a decade earlier, is that the constant brinkmanship in DC is eroding trust. Historically, raising the debt ceiling was not controversial — the “full faith and credit” of the United States wasn’t something either party wanted to trifle with. That’s because the entire global financial system hinges on the promise that the United States always pays its debts.

CNN —There may not be any lasting major negative ramifications from the surprise US credit rating downgrade by Fitch this week — not for the economy, not for consumers and not for the government’s ability to borrow. Normally, when your credit score as a consumer falls — or your credit rating as a country — there are negative consequences. Here’s why the United States is unlikely to see that kind of impact from the Fitch downgrade. The downgrade wasn’t a huge dropFitch cut its US credit rating to AA+ from what had been a sterling AAA rating. “Fitch’s credit rating is an expression of the probability of a default.

"We believe that many more Gino-authored papers contain fake data," the Data Colada professors wrote. Data Colada found that the raw data showed clear anomalies, such as a distribution infinitely more likely to be produced by a random-number generator than actual people. Soon after, Data Colada ran an article alleging that Gino tampered with data in at least one of her honesty-pledge experiments. A post on Data Colada or a tweet from Brown is like a bomb going off in the behavioral-science world. Others who attempted to build on Gino's studies are grappling with having wasted time, money, and energy.

New BT boss’s biggest test is investor relations

LONDON, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - BT’s (BT.L) board faced the challenge of hiring a new CEO willing to implement a turnaround strategy decided by their predecessor. It has solved that problem by appointing one of its own members, Allison Kirkby, to the post vacated by outgoing Philip Jansen. Shares in the Swedish telco sank 4% on news of her departure, suggesting Telia’s loss is a gain for BT. Kirkby won’t take over until January 2024 but, having sat on BT’s board for more than four years, she should be able to hit the road running. Keeping these two investors on her side will be the real test for Kirkby at BT.

Kirby has previously served as president and CEO of Swedish telecoms provider Telia, with experience at Virgin Media and Denmark's TDC. She has been a member of the BT Group board for the past four years. His legacy includes BT's push to build a national fibre network, offering discounted wholesale fibre pricing to major broadband providers in exchange for shifting customers to the grid. U.K. telecoms regulator Ofcom in May ruled that BT subsidiary Openreach's Equinox 2 wholesale pricing scheme was allowed. "Based on the evidence available to us, we don't consider Openreach's new pricing discounts to be anti-competitive," Ofcom said at the time.

New York CNN —The Securities and Exchange Commission asked Coinbase to halt trading on all cryptocurrencies except for bitcoin before it sued the company in June, Coinbase’s chief executive told the Financial Times. The SEC’s request left Coinbase, America’s largest crypto exchange, with no choice but to take the matter to court, CEO Brian Armstrong said, because stopping those trades would have “essentially meant the end of the crypto industry in the US,” he said. “We really didn’t have a choice at that point,” Armstrong told the FT in an interview published Monday. Recounting discussions with the regulator before the lawsuit, Armstrong told the FT that Coinbase had requested clarity on how the SEC determined that every digital asset other than bitcoin is a security. The SEC disagrees, and has often said that most crypto offerings are securities that should face the same government regulations on Wall Street as stocks and bonds.

CNN —Federal prosecutors urged a judge to revoke Sam Bankman-Fried’s bail to stop him from tampering with witnesses before his criminal fraud trial, saying there are likely no conditions that the cryptocurrency entrepreneur will abide by to satisfy their concerns. The additional arguments were made in a court filing Friday — following a hearing on Wednesday when prosecutors first asked the judge to detain the co-founder of FTX. “The defendant’s argument that the defendant did nothing other than exercise his First Amendment rights is a red herring. Witness tampering is not constitutionally protected speech,” prosecutors wrote. The charges against Bankman-Fried stem from what prosecutors have characterized as one of the biggest financial frauds in US history.

July 26 (Reuters) - A tentative labor deal between United Parcel Service (UPS.N) and the Teamsters union on Tuesday could pressure full-year outlook for the world's largest parcel delivery firm, according to analysts. UPS shares closed down 1.9% on Tuesday signaling investor worries about the labor deal's impact on costs. Analysts say the new agreement could weigh on the company's margins at a time when most operators are cutting costs to protect profits amid an industry-wide slowdown. Susquehanna analyst Bascome Majors expects the new deal could drive UPS' cost per piece 2.5% higher than the brokerage's current expectations. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo analyst Allison Poliniak estimated the new contract could reduce UPS' 2024 earnings per share by more than $1.

New York CNN —A federal judge is set to consider a gag order on former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried after prosecutors accused him of leaking his former girlfriend and business partner’s personal writings to the New York Times. US District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan was expected to rule on a so-called gag order that would prevent Bankman-Fried from discussing his case publicly. At a previous bail hearing, Kaplan alluded to the possibility of revoking Bankman-Fried’s bail deal and forcing him to await trial in jail. In February, Judge Kaplan tightened restrictions on Bankman-Fried’s bail after prosecutors flagged a direct message Bankman-Fried sent to a former FTX employee, raising concerns about potential witness-tampering. While his lawyers said they would comply with any gag order, they pushed back on prosecutors’ allegations of witness-tampering.
