AC-130 gunners Joe Gipson (back) and Isaac Dowell tend the 105mm cannon aboard a US Air Force AC-130J during a live-fire exercise over South Korea. A 105mm howitzer is seen at the rear of a US Air Force AC-130J at Osan Air Base, South Korea, in early June 2024. ‘Spooky’ historyUS Air Force gunships trace their lineage back to the Vietnam War, when the service set up 7.62 mm guns to fire out one side of a C-47 transport aircraft. With the AC-130J model, introduced in 2017, the Air Force removed the machine guns in favor of the more precision-guided munitions. The AC-130’s crew acknowledges the dangers of ground fire to their aircraft, and some analysts question its usefulness in any potential conflict with North Korea.

New York University will take a number of steps to respond to antisemitism as part of a legal settlement with three Jewish students who said they were verbally harassed because of their identities and support for Israel, the university and plaintiffs said in a joint statement on Tuesday. The university will pay some money as part of the agreement, and create a new administrative position to make sure all allegations of discrimination and harassment are responded to consistently and adequately, among other actions. Their lawsuit is part of a wave of litigation faced by schools around the country from Jewish, Muslim and Arab students who say they have experienced harassment and discrimination on campus since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Columbia, Harvard, U.C.L.A. and the University of Pennsylvania are among the schools that have faced similar suits from Jewish students.

Two top Democratic senators have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation of Justice Clarence Thomas for possible violations of federal ethics and tax laws. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Ron Wyden of Oregon sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland last week asking that he appoint a special counsel to investigate Justice Thomas’s failure to disclose lavish gifts, luxury travel, a loan for a recreational vehicle and other perks given to him by wealthy friends. The request further intensified efforts by Senate Democrats to scrutinize Justice Thomas’s conduct at a time when they are trying to force Supreme Court justices to comply with stricter ethics and financial disclosure rules. “We do not make this request lightly,” the senators wrote in a joint statement. “Supreme Court justices are properly expected to obey laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and the appearance of impropriety and to comply with the federal tax code.”

But for the people who actually do live in those homes, social media photography has changed what it means to live in a picturesque place. Once, she and a friend were walking his French bulldog when a tourist asked if they could “borrow” the pup for a quick photo op. Private lives, public placesIn that story, everybody had a good time. “I was once woken up at 6 a.m. on Easter Sunday by French teenagers taking pictures outside,” Johnston says. The protests intensified this year until campuses emptied out for the summer. Now, a prominent Wall Street law firm is taking a more direct approach with protesters. Sullivan & Cromwell, a 145-year-old firm that has counted Goldman Sachs and Amazon among its clients, says that, for job applicants, participation in an anti-Israel protest — on campus or off — could be a disqualifying factor. The firm is scrutinizing students’ behavior with the help of a background check company, looking at their involvement with pro-Palestinian student groups, scouring social media and reviewing news reports and footage from protests. It is looking for explicit instances of antisemitism as well as statements and slogans it has deemed to be “triggering” to Jews, said Joseph C. Shenker, a leader of Sullivan & Cromwell.

CNN —China and Belarus announced they were holding joint military training exercises just miles from the border of Poland – a NATO and European Union member. Belarus’ Ministry of Defense said troops from China’s People’s Liberation Army arrived in Belarus over the weekend. The exercises are taking place near the Belarus city of Brest on the Belarus-Poland border which is around 130 miles from the Polish capital of Warsaw and some 40 miles from Minsk’s border with Ukraine. Moscow partly used Belarus as a launching pad for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 after amassing troops on the Ukrainian border during what it said were joint military exercises. The Chinese troops arrived in Belarus just days after that country joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Thursday.

Whether you're mid-career or nearing retirement, it's important to know where you're investing — and how those accounts could impact future taxes, experts say. Many workers are heavily concentrated in tax-deferred savings via a pretax 401(k) plan or traditional individual retirement accounts, which incur regular income taxes on future withdrawals, based on federal tax brackets. However, many advisors push for using a mix of pretax, after-tax Roth and taxable brokerage accounts for more flexibility in retirement. The right mix can provide "a lot of different levers to pull to manage your adjusted gross income," explained certified financial planner Judy Brown at SC&H Group in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area. Medicare Part B and Part D premiums are based on so-called modified adjusted gross income, which is your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, from two years prior.

The NATO summit is being held in Washington, DC, this week. It comes amid rising global conflict and turmoil. But questions about President Joe Biden's political future will overshadow the meeting. For Caroline Li and Colin Wang, moving in together after dating for eight months was a matter of serendipity and urgency. Last fall, Mr. Wang, 28, was completing his final year of medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles, when he learned that the two-bedroom apartment he shared with one roommate had a mold infestation. He had to move out immediately, but had trouble finding new housing. Francois Lo Presti | Afp | Getty ImagesFrench voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the second and final round of voting in a snap parliamentary election. By offering voters a starker choice and fewer candidates, RN's opponents hope that the electorate will opt for the non-RN candidate. "For instance, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said voters should vote neither for the RN nor candidates from the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party. At the same time, current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has called for everyone to vote against the RN." If the choice was between a far-left and far-right candidate, however, the picture was more nuanced, showing a split vote.
