The Biden administration on Friday said it will resume offering free at-home Covid-19 tests to American households in late September as the virus has gained a stronger foothold in the U.S. this summer. Americans will soon be able to use COVIDtests.gov to request four free tests, administration officials told reporters during a briefing. The tests will be able to detect the Covid variants that are currently circulating, most of which are descendants of the highly contagious omicron variant JN.1. The government's program has provided more than 1.8 billion free over-the-counter Covid tests to Americans since it started in 2021, according to O'Connell. But the government decided to reopen the program in late September because it's when more Americans begin to travel and gather indoors with loved ones.

CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

CNN —Vandalism has come to another US historic site, Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Military Park, where a pivotal battle of the Civil War was fought. “Our hearts sank when these two cases of vandalism were reported within days of each other,” Park Superintendent Kristina Heister said in a statement. “We were fearful that the graffiti carved into the rock may be there for future generations.”Luckily, park staff was able to clean and remove all traces of the vandalism. Heister thanked both the staffers who were able to remove the graffiti and park visitors who alerted them to the damage. CNN —A second former Memphis police officer facing federal civil rights charges in the violent arrest and beating death of Tyre Nichols changed his plea to guilty on Friday in federal court. Mills and Martin are among five former officers charged in the death of Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. He admitted he “willfully used unreasonable force against Tyre Nichols,” “aided and abetted” other officers in assaulting Nichols and “failed to intervene” in other officers’ use of force. Police said the unit was permanently deactivated shortly after Nichols’ death. The beating and Nichols’ death led to protests and vigils in Memphis and other major US cities, reigniting the contentious debate over policing and the ways that law enforcement treat Black people.

Epic is a health-care software giant whose technology is used in thousands of U.S. hospitals and clinics. And one theme stood out during the health-care company's event on Tuesday: How new artificial intelligence features can help doctors and patients. Faulkner said the company has more than 100 AI features in the works, though many of the tools are still in the early stages of development. Doctors will be able to use AI to automatically queue up orders for prescriptions and labs, the company said. The standard 5% or 6% commission was usually split between the seller’s broker and the buyer’s broker, referred to as cooperative compensation. After August 17, sellers and their agents are prohibited from advertising how much they would pay to a buyer’s agent in the MLS. Given the new rules, McMahan said she might reconsider her offer of a 3% buyers’ broker commission the next time she sells her home. These agreements are intended to inform buyers that they may be responsible for covering their Realtor’s commission payment themselves if a seller chooses not to offer it.
