Twenty-four of 26 economists in the Nov 15-25 poll said the BOJ's next action, if any, would be "unwinding its ultra-easy monetary policy". Widely known as the policy accord, it requires the central bank to achieve its 2% inflation target "at the earliest date possible." Among those who wanted a revision, seven called for more flexibly judging achievement of the inflation target. One BOJ watcher calling for change wanted a lower inflation target, and another said the BOJ's mandate should be enlarged to include targeting employment or wage rises. Two economists in the poll said the accord should simply be abolished.
The Senate will vote on a bill to protect same-sex marriage on Tuesday night. Twelve Republican senators so far have voted to advance the bill. Senators have tweaked the bill, which passed the Democratic-controlled House in July, to get GOP support. So far, 12 Republicans have cast votes in support of advancing the bill, and more could emerge when the final version comes up. A Gallup poll from June 2021 found that 70% of Americans — including 55% of Republicans — support same-sex marriage.
It would not bar states from blocking same-sex or interracial marriages if the Supreme Court allowed them to do so. A similar, but not identical, bill passed the House of Representatives earlier this year with support from 47 Republicans and all Democrats. The House would need to approve the Senate version before it is sent to President Joe Biden to sign into law. In June, the Supreme Court overturned the nationwide right to an abortion, undoing 50 years of precedent. In a concurring opinion, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the court should consider reversing other decisions protecting individual freedoms, including the 2015 ruling on gay marriage.
So far this season, an estimated 6.2 million flu illnesses have been logged, according to the latest CDC data. Of the samples reported to the CDC this season, about 76% are the H3N2 strain of influenza A. With the early start to the flu season this year, many people were infected before they had a chance to get vaccinated, making it easier for the virus to spread. “It’s a pretty safe bet that flu activity is going to continue on for several more weeks or months,” said Brammer. “Then the floodgates opened.”Now, 30% to 40% of Rice’s patients in need of the most intensive care have the flu.

WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The United States should end its prosecution of Julian Assange, leading media outlets from the United States and Europe that had collaborated with the WikiLeaks founder said on Monday, citing press freedom concerns. Assange is wanted by U.S. authorities on 18 counts, including a spying charge, related to WikiLeaks' release of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables. Monday marked twelve years since those media outlets collaborated to release excerpts from over 250,000 documents obtained by Assange in the so-called "Cablegate" leak. If extradited to the United States, he faces a sentence of up to 175 years in an American maximum security prison. "Publishing is not a crime," the media outlets said in their letter on Monday.

Filed: February 17, 2023, 2 p.m. GMT One year has passed since Russia launched its invasion of neighboring Ukraine, an operation that both Moscow and military experts predicted would be over in a matter of days. Russian forces, reinforced by the largest troop call-up since World War Two, have changed tactics, gambling on a grinding war of attrition in the once industrial, now-devastated Donbas region, seeking a foothold after months of setbacks to what Moscow calls its ‘special military operation’. The war has devastated Ukraine, with cities and towns flattened by artillery and missile strikes. A 600-mile (1,000-km) ferociously-contested frontline cuts across the southeast of Ukraine, where thousands of shells are expended and – according to Ukrainian officials - hundreds of soldiers killed daily in scenes reminiscent of the carnage of World War One. Massive Russian missile strikes on major Ukrainian cities mean the capital Kyiv regularly goes dark, its metro system a citywide bomb shelter.
Chartbook: India power generationTotal power consumption was broadly stable at 115 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in October from a year earlier. But there was a big increase in renewable generation (+3.1 billion kWh) led by solar (+2.1 billion kWh) with smaller contributions from hydro (+0.7 billion kWh) and wind (+0.3 billion kWh). As in China, the massive deployment of renewables is beginning to slow the growth in demand for coal-fired generation. But renewables are starting to bend the curve of coal consumption for power generation and reduce the future trajectory. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said about 70 Kalibr cruise missiles were launched mostly from Russian aircraft inside Russia and 51 were destroyed by Ukraine. How Qatar ended up hosting the World Cup

CNN —With the World Cup now underway in Qatar, many are wondering how this moment arrived – that a tiny Gulf nation with little footballing history ended up hosting the biggest event the sport has to offer. The country’s World Cup debut was 12 years in the making, a period in which Qatar’s host status has stirred controversy within the footballing community and beyond. Those included a lack of existing infrastructure and the region’s intense heat in the summer, when World Cup tournaments are traditionally held. But questions about just how Qatar won the right to stage the World Cup continue. Meanwhile, Qatar’s state-backed discrimination against LGBTQ people has also been criticized in the years leading up to the World Cup.
While the S & P 500 rose 11% during two weeks in March and 18% from mid-June to mid-August, investors bailed out and tripped the prior lows for the year. It wasn't obvious that Americans still had huge amounts of buying power that would continue to drive price levels higher. One definition might be when there is a fundamental shift in some critical measurements of the most negative weights pressuring stock prices. The S & P soared 5.5% that day, and the Nasdaq vaulted over 7%. This rally is different, even if it moves sideways or falters for a while because its genesis is based on real facts and figures.

After Omid's family escaped Kabul, members of his extended family came by to collect some of their more precious items, and gave other things away.
The Dow was off about 30 points, or 0.1%, in midday trading following comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard about the possibility of much bigger interest rate hikes. Jefferson didn’t comment specifically about how much higher he thinks rates need to go though in order to get inflation in check. In addition, Bullard has a vote on rate hikes at the Fed’s next meeting in December, but he does not have a say on interest rates in 2023. The seven Fed governors and the New York Fed president are always on the FOMC. The St. Louis Fed president doesn’t get a vote again until 2025.

Credit card companies may lower credit limits if you haven't used your card for a while, or if your credit score suddenly drops. Why credit card companies lower credit limitsWhen you apply for a credit card, the credit card issuer looks at your credit and the ability to pay back any outstanding balance. If your credit score suddenly drops, for example, the credit card company might decide to lower your credit limit. How a lower credit limit can hurt your credit scoreYour cards' credit limits factor heavily into the formula that determines your credit score. Your credit limits specifically factor into the second biggest factor of your credit score: your credit balances, or your credit utilization.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Nov 15 (Reuters) - Ground teams at Kennedy Space Center prepared on Tuesday for a third try at launching NASA's towering, next-generation moon rocket, the debut flight of the U.S. space agency's Artemis lunar program, 50 years after Apollo's last moon mission. NASA flight-readiness crews were eager for success after 10 weeks beset by engineering difficulties, two hurricanes and two trips from the spacecraft's hangar to its launch pad. Two previous launch attempts, on Aug. 29 and Sept. 3, were aborted because of fuel line leaks and other technical problems that NASA has since resolved. While moored to its launch pad last week, the rocket endured fierce winds and rains from Hurricane Nicole, forcing a two-day flight postponement. NASA defends the program as a boon to space exploration that has generated tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in commerce.
