District Attorney Fani Willis brought charges against Trump and 18 other defendants under the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The charges include forgery in the first degree, false statements and writing, and violating the RICO Act. If found guilty under the RICO Act, Trump could face a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine. She has also used the statute against local gangs and in an ongoing 56-count RICO case against rapper Young Thug and others. The RICO charge would also carry up to a 20-year prison sentence on its own, making it one of the more severe charges.

A sign is seen posted on the exterior of a Home Depot store on February 21, 2023 in El Cerrito, California. Home Depot topped earnings expectations on Tuesday, but posted a 2% year-over-year sales decline as customers remained wary of big purchases and major projects. Home Depot faces a more challenging sales backdrop, as demand for do-it-yourself projects and contractors normalizes after nearly three years of unusually high demand. "Generally speaking, the homeowner customer — who is really our customer — remains healthy and remains engaged in home improvement," he said. Home Depot said in its earnings release that the company's board of directors approved $15 billion in share buybacks, which will take effect Tuesday.

Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, in Atlanta on August 30, 2022. Audra Melton/The New York Times/ReduxFani Willis had only been in office as Fulton County district attorney for a day when former President Donald Trump phoned Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger urging him to “find” votes to overturn the 2020 presidential election results on Jan. 2, 2021. She had campaigned on the premise of restoring integrity to the Fulton County district attorney’s office, was elected after ousting six-term incumbent Paul Howard and inherited a stack of backlogged cases from her predecessor. A court document in Georgia indicated Trump would be criminally charged under 13 different statutes. The top charge would be RICO, over his efforts to overturn election results. The document was pulled down after a few moments, according to Reuters. The document briefly posted on the court website Monday indicates Trump will be charged with RICO, soliciting public officials to violate their oaths of office, conspiracy, and filing false statements. His indictment also covers Trump pressuring Georgia officials to "find" votes and conspiring with others to use false electors to convince Congress to declare him the winner of the 2020 election.

Since CPI inflation tends to be faster than the PCE measures that the Fed uses to set its inflation target, that means one important area of policymaker focus may have dipped below target already. But the pace of increase pales against the double-digit gains in 2021, and the inflation rate for rental housing has also slowed. A recent study by San Francisco Fed economists, using real-time housing and rent data from companies like Zillow, projected "a sharp turnaround in shelter inflation" through late next year. Two versions of the San Francisco estimates show shelter inflation hitting 0% next year, well below the 3%-to-4% range that Meyer said could help the Fed traverse its last inflation mile more quickly. Other aspects of the economy may also be snapping into place, a possible late-arriving validation of the Fed's initial expectation that rising inflation in 2021 would prove "transitory."

Jordan earlier this month received a subpoena to testify before the grand jury. The Republican Trump has said he expects to be charged this week by Fulton County DA Fani Willis in what would be his fourth criminal indictment. Georgia criminal law makes it a felony to directly or indirectly try to deter a witness from testifying in any court or before a grand jury. In his Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote: "Would someone please tell the Fulton County grand jury that I did not tamper with the election." Trump was indicted in early August by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., on charges that he conspired with others to overturn his defeat in the national election in 2020.

Sterling, a Republican, said that Trump lost the state in 2020 and that his repeated claims of election fraud have been unsubstantiated. He said Sunday that election-related violence remains his "biggest concern," as individuals could be radicalized to do something "stupid." Ga. prosecutors have found emails and texts linking members of Trump's legal team to a key voting breach, per CNN. The breach in question occurred in Coffee County, a rural GOP-heavy jurisdiction in southeastern Georgia. And some of the individuals linked to the breach in Coffee County might also be charged in the larger criminal investigation. According to individuals who spoke with CNN, investigators in Georgia have amassed evidence that the breach in Coffee County was driven by Trump's legal team so his allies could examine sensitive voting software. Per the CNN report, Georgia investigators have probed the participants of the breach, which included Misty Hampton, the Coffee County official who appeared to have written that invitation.

Former Georgia Lt. Gov Geoff Duncan, a Republican, said Saturday on CNN that he has been told to appear Tuesday before a Fulton County grand jury to testify about the efforts by Trump and his allies. Independent journalist George Chidi posted on social media later Saturday that he’d been told to appear before the grand jury on Tuesday too. The witnesses Willis has subpoenaed to testify when she presents her case include Duncan, Chidi and former Georgia state Sen. Jen Jordan, a Democrat. Georgia law is unusual in that special purpose grand juries – which have broad investigative powers – are not permitted to issue indictments. When the subpoenaed witnesses appear before the regular grand jury, those grand jurors will hear the witnesses’ testimony for the first time with a narrower purpose at hand: to approve or reject indictments.

They said that the state law, signed by Republican Governor Brad Little in March, illegally discriminates on the basis of gender identity and violates students' right to privacy. Idaho's bathroom bill allows students to sue schools for $5,000 if they encounter a transgender student in a bathroom the law forbids. That effectively puts a "bounty" on transgender students and encourages others to search them out, the lawsuit said. The new law says schools must provide a "reasonable accommodation" for transgender students unwilling or unable to use their assigned bathroom. Washington, DC CNN —Americans became slightly less optimistic about the economy this month, following two straight months of growing confidence. Sentiment had been on an upswing throughout the summer, mostly due to slower inflation, and is well above the record lows reached this time last year. Signs of cooling inflationGas prices, which are highly visible indicators of inflation for consumers, have risen in recent weeks, which could weigh on sentiment in the future. Still, consumers face the resumption of student loan payments later this year, and that could weigh on household budgets. US consumers opened up their wallets this summer, with many flocking to the smash-hit “Barbie” movie, attending concerts by Taylor Swift or Beyoncé, or traveling abroad.

Kemp also testified last year before the Atlanta-area special grand jury probing efforts by Trump to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. Trump said Wednesday night that he wouldn't sign the pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is because "I can name three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president."
