New York CNN —Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth increased by more than $29 billion between your morning coffee and your lunch break. Shares of Meta (META) jumped more than 21% on the news of a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share to be paid out on March 26 to shareholders of record as of February 22. This upswing plasters over potential harm to Meta stock after Zuckerberg, alongside other social media company heads, testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the risks their products pose to young people. Zuckerberg was pressed about internal Meta documents that suggested the company estimates the lifetime value of a teen user at $270, as well as Meta’s transparency regarding how its monetizes user data. Zuckerberg apologized to the parents in attendance, who say their children were victims of social media.

AdvertisementThe 20-year age gap between my oldest and youngest kids gives me the unique perspective of being both a young and old parent. Being a young parent felt coolIn my late 20's, revealing I had a 10-year-old became almost a novelty. By this time, I was regularly scouring the Yellow Pages and cold-calling businesses to ask if they were hiring because being a young parent meant being resourceful and constantly hustling. Being a young and old parent means my two grandbabies will benefit from having cool, young aunties.

Opponents said the changes would make it easier for employers to exploit children and longer hours could negatively affect schoolwork. “Nearly 1 million searches have been performed for ‘How can I get a job as a teen.’ They want to work. Democrats opposing the bill argued that current law allows students plenty of time to work and attend school. Rep. Anna Eskamani questioned whether the measure was being proposed because the state's immigrant employment restrictions are making it more difficult to fill some jobs. But his consistent criticism of some of the real issues happening in Big Tech has sometimes reminded me of a classic Clickhole headline: "Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point." Section 230 is controversial and has become a rallying point for some conservatives and others, who think it allows Big Tech to hide from criticisms that it isn't fair to all sides. Clearly, these big platforms haven't succeeded — sometimes motivated by a whole bunch of internal factors, including profit. Zuckerberg is expected to tout the company’s more than 30 safety controls, according to prepared testimony released ahead of the hearing. In recent weeks, Meta has also begun hiding more “age-inappropriate” content in teens’ feeds and restricting teens from receiving direct messages from people they don’t follow. Ideally, Clegg said, Zuckerberg would authorize as many as 124 new hires, but acknowledged that financial pressures could make it difficult. After months of radio silence from Zuckerberg, Clegg tried to follow up, this time with a slimmed-down proposal that envisioned either 25 new hires or, if even that was infeasible, just seven. “This would be the bare minimum needed to meet basic policymaker inquiries,” Clegg wrote to Zuckerberg on Nov. 10, 2021.

OpenAI said Monday that it's partnering with Common Sense Media on an initiative designed to help teens understand how to use artificial intelligence in a safe manner. Common Sense, a nonprofit focused on making technology safe and accessible to kids, has been working to develop an AI ratings and review system intended for parents, children and educators to better understand the technology's risks and benefits. In September, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the Craigslist founder's philanthropic arm, said it contributed $3 million to help fund a Common Sense artificial intelligence and education initiative. OpenAI and Common Sense didn't say how LLMs will be tweaked to help aid educators or teens. Altman said LLMs customized for educational purposes could help teens "who want to learn about science or learn about biology."

Until now, the social platforms have largely had the same response: We’ll help teens and families make smart decisions themselves. But now, with growing claims that social media can hurt young users, including worries that it risks driving them to depression or even suicide, online safety advocates say that response falls far short. This month Meta announced a proposed blueprint for federal legislation calling for app stores, not social media companies, to verify users’ ages and enforce an age minimum. Safety action beyond CongressAs efforts to rein in tech platforms have ground to a standstill on Capitol Hill, much of the momentum for regulating social media has picked up outside the halls of Congress. Elsewhere, state-backed and consumer lawsuits against the companies are ramping up pressure to regulate tech platforms as the litigation reveals more about their inner workings.

The NewsTeenagers who use cannabis, alcohol and nicotine are more likely to have underlying psychiatric symptoms, and worse symptoms, than their peers who are not regularly using substances, new research has found. The research, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, found that such substances are linked to an array of symptoms and conditions, including anxiety, depression, hyperactivity and suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that asking adolescents about substance use may provide a powerful screening tool when looking for underlying mental health issues, researchers said. “Universally screening for psychiatric symptoms in the context of all types of substance use is what we think might be most important,” said Brenden Tervo-Clemmens, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota and lead author of the paper. “All the symptoms of mental health we examined, be it depression, suicidal thoughts, ADHD, were elevated no matter what the substance was,” he added.

At some point during your teenage years, you probably developed an idea of what "success" as an adult would look like. Sticking to that definition as an adult is a surefire way to end up unhappy, according to serial hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling business author Chip Conley. "And we either tried to emulate that and live up to it, or we in some cases rebelled against it. Rather, you should "acknowledge the negative aspects ... (AP) — A woman was taken into police custody in the Maryland suburbs of Washington following a series of apparently random stabbings and pedestrians struck by a vehicle. Six people were injured, including two stabbing victims who were hospitalized in critical condition, police Deputy Chief James McCreary said during a news conference Thursday evening. Officials released a surveillance video of the woman, calling her a person of interest in the string of attacks. They found a woman with minor injuries who was walking on the sidewalk when someone hit her, McCreary said. A short time later, two more pedestrians were struck and injured a few miles from that scene, he said.

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — Prosecutors arguing that a Michigan school shooter's mother is partly responsible for the deaths of four students told jurors Thursday that the tragedy could have been easily prevented when she was confronted with his violent drawings just a few hours earlier. “Even though she didn't pull the trigger, she's responsible for those deaths,” Keast said in his opening statement. Jennifer Crumbley, 45, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Nov. 30, 2021, attack. “The two people with all of the information, all of the background to put this drawing into context, were James and Jennifer Crumbley,” Keast said. Jennifer Crumbley, who will testify in her own defense, was a “hypervigilant mother who cared more about her son than anything in the world,” Smith said.

Her youthful obsession realized in front of her, Ella was inspired to buy her first piece of Lolita fashion in 2015, from the popular Lolita e-tailer Angel Pretty. While Lolita style is named after Vladimir Nabokov’s eponymous teen in the controversial 1955 novel, the overlap ends there. Even 1950s-style American prom dresses, with their extravagant skirts and bodices, influence contemporary Lolita fashion, he said. The skirt's fullness, achieved through the use of a petticoat, is a key characteristic of Lolita fashion. Ella says her personal Lolita style is a blend of classic and sweet, with a healthy dose of prints and patterns.

But you should pay more attention since social withdrawal could signal something deeper is going on, a new study has found. Across the globe, 10% to 20% of adolescents experience suicidal thoughts, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death among them, highlighting the need for strengthened prevention efforts. But the current study examined the associations between the long-term trajectory of multiple categories of psychological and behavioral symptoms and suicidal thoughts. But the link between social withdrawal and suicidal thoughts could be explained by the “loss of protective social connections,” according to the study. “If you hear a lot of complaints about aches and pains, it doesn’t (automatically) mean your child is suicidal,” Willard said.
