Trump endorsed Jim Jordan for speaker of the House — but it won't be enough to get him the job. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to succeed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is on, and Rep. Jim Jordan just scored what may be the best outside endorsement a Republican could get — former President Donald Trump. Since Trump endorsed the Ohio Republican on Thursday evening, several House conservatives have done just that. Just ask former Rep. Liz Cheney, or any of the other House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump and were primaried out of a job. Trump doesn't have as much sway on Capitol Hill as you thinkThis may come as a surprise, but Republicans on Capitol Hill — even those that support his 2024 candidacy — ignore Trump all the time.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan is a top contender in the race for House speaker after Kevin McCarthy's ouster this week. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe race to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House is heating up — and US aid to Ukraine may be the biggest issue on the ballot. The top contenders for the spot are Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. In April 2022, 10 House Republicans voted against a bill allowing the Biden administration to more easily lend military equipment to Ukraine. The following month, 57 House Republicans voted "no" on a nearly $40 billion aid package for Ukraine.

Trump, the front-runner of the GOP presidential primary, reportedly discussed sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines – including the number of warheads they routinely carry and how close they can get to Russian submarines without being detected – to an Australian businessman. Earlier this week, the House ousted Kevin McCarthy – a stunning scene put in motion by a handful of far-right, MAGA lawmakers and one that marked the first time in history that the maneuver has been used to successfully oust a House speaker. Trump himself considered filling the role of speaker after being nominated by Texas Rep. “I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress,” Trump told Fox News Digital on Thursday. Trump is still considering a Tuesday visit to the Capitol, timed to when the GOP conference is set to hold a forum for the Speaker candidates.

The ex-president dived into the mayhem following the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, characteristically seeking to cast himself as kingmaker and to steal the spotlight for himself. Then Trump teased the possibility that he could even step in as speaker himself on an interim basis. But the ex-president’s biggest bombshell was still to come – shortly after midnight, he endorsed Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan for the job. Jordan, who is running against Republican House Majority leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana for the top job, would likely augur a new period of fierce combat with the White House if he wins the speakership. He has opposed the US lifeline of arms and ammunition to Ukraine, and a Republican House majority led by Jordan would likely increase the chances of a government shutdown next month in a showdown over spending with Democrats.

The House speaker election is days away after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster that has left the chamber in need of a successor. Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. House Republicans are set to hold their own candidate forum behind closed doors on Tuesday before holding an internal election and chamber-wide vote in the following days. “No candidate for Speaker is likely to receive 96 percent of the Republican Conference vote required by this new precedent,” Rep. Tom McClintock of California said in a statement. But the California Republican made clear after the vote to boot him from the role that he wouldn’t run for speaker again.

Although longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields eased from 16-year highs on Wednesday, investors remain concerned that the elevated levels may pressure equities. Worries about U.S. government spending and its ballooning budget deficit have added to uncertainty around the interest rates trajectory, contributing to a steep selloff that have caused a rout in Treasury prices and a spike in yields. The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost around 5% and 6% last month as yields spiked. Traders put the chance of interest rates remaining unchanged in November and December at 80% and 63%, respectively, according to CME's FedWatch tool. Two candidates, GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio, have already launched campaigns. He’s not the first GOP speaker to think so. But in this political climate, any Republican speaker who has to rely on Democratic votes is critically weakened and probably can’t last long. But the only way a Republican speaker will be able to pass aide to Ukraine will be to do so with Democratic help. The lack of such flexibility has been a fatal flaw of GOP speakers for years.
