But this is the global system we do have and, within it, some billionaires are behaving much more generously and ethically than others. Melinda French Gates is one of the good ones. French Gates has long been an advocate for family planning and women’s rights abroad, and now she’s dedicating $1 billion through 2026 to those issues. Female billionaires, in other words, are far more likely than male ones to give away substantial portions of their wealth. So yes, we can applaud the good billionaires who give their wealth away, even if we think that they are representative of a bigger inequality problem.

CNN —In recent weeks, an increasingly familiar list of Republicans has dominated the not-very-subtle competition to become Donald Trump’s running mate. Trump himself has added to the air of inevitability by floating these names in interviews and appearances over and over. Many around the campaign believe the lack of secrecy surrounding the open audition raises the possibility Trump ultimately picks someone off the public’s radar. A source confirmed Trump floated Cotton’s name during a recent private dinner, surprising some of his guests. Earlier this year, Hagerty was spotted at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach with the former president.

"As Mr. Conlon knows, the internal loan was paid off in 2021, and since 2019 I have put over $30 million into my company," Chanos said in the statement. "Indeed, all of my fellow management company partners have lost money over the past few years, none more than me. Mr. Conlon is simply trying to mitigate his losses by this crude shakedown attempt." Meanwhile, the suit said Chanos' girlfriend, Crystal Conners, was the sales agent on the transaction, which would have made $540,000 at standard commission rates, Bloomberg reported.

In her op-ed, French Gates said she was once told to set her own agenda before someone else sets it — and that’s why she chose to leave the Gates Foundation. The dollar made a steady start to the week, as investors were focused on U.S., European and Japanese inflation data to guide the global interest rate outlook. The euro , which gained 0.9% on the dollar last week, was in the middle of a range it has held for more than a year at $1.0846. German inflation on Wednesday and euro zone readings on Friday will be watched for confirmation of a European rate cut that traders have priced for next week. The dollar had fallen back after data showed a slowdown in consumer price rises in April and disappointing retail sales, before strengthening last week thanks to better-than-expected PMI survey data. China's yuan finished last week weaker than 7.24 per dollar, its lowest level since early May.
