BURMA SAHIB, by Paul TherouxGeorge Orwell died of tuberculosis in 1950, at the age of 46. The word “Orwellian” is as omnipresent as “Kafkaesque.” His two dystopian novel-allegories — “Animal Farm” and “1984” — have sold in the millions around the world. Almost everything that Orwell wrote seems to be in print. But there is one area of his life that is relatively unexplored and full of baffling gaps, not to say mystery. He was still several years removed from becoming “George Orwell” by adopting the nom de plume that would carry his legacy.

Turkey's newly appointed central bank governor Fatih Karahan has his work cut out for him, named to the job by presidential decree over the weekend after the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Hafize Gaye Erkan. Previously the central bank's deputy governor, Karahan's resume features years spent in prominent American institutions and companies. Turkey's consumer price index print came out Monday showing a roughly 65% increase year-on-year for the month of January. Its central bank has made eight consecutive interest rate hikes since May 2023 — for a cumulative 3,650 basis points — in an effort to rein in soaring inflation. While painful for the country, investors and economists say the rate hikes have been necessary and that continuity in monetary policy priorities will engender confidence in the new central bank chief.

Would you look at the quarter Amazon just delivered. One of the main highlights came from its cloud unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS), where revenue growth finally accelerated. Better yet, management's comment about how it expects accelerating AWS revenue trends to continue through 2024 should keep the bulls happy. If the AWS revenue growth acceleration continues and the company continues its progress on expanding margins, the stock should get back there. Driving this accelerating revenue growth was an increase in larger new deals while the cost optimization headwind "continued to attenuate," the company said.

While earnings, profit margins, and cash flow came in slightly ahead of expectations, sales were light across the board. Segment margin , similar to an adjusted operating income margin, grew 64 basis points to 23.5%, slightly ahead of expectations and ahead of the high-end of management's previous forecast. Segment margin performance was largely better than expected, with the exception of Building Technologies, and cash flow generation came in solidly above expectations. Where they landed on guidance both in terms of sales and margin performance, and therefore earnings, hinges on the short-cycle recovery. In Indonesia, sitting presidents are allowed to campaign for candidates provided they do not use state resources and take official leave to do so, but incumbents have typically remained neutral. The furore has prompted Jokowi to repeatedly clarify his stance and even show reporters print-outs of the election law to clear his name. "Some of our campaign activities were indeed cancelled or not permitted by various local governments...and non-governmental entities, which likely were influenced by those in power," said Ade Chandra, a campaign spokesperson for rival presidential candidate Anies Baswedan. State rice handouts have allegedly included Prabowo campaign stickers, prompting complaints from rivals, according to media. Discontent with Jokowi's actions is also extending to his cabinet, from which chief security minister Mahfud MD, who is a vice presidential candidate on a rival ticket, has said he will resign soon.

Johannes Neudecker | Picture Alliance | Getty ImagesChina's factory activity expanded for a third-straight month in January, a private-sector survey showed on Thursday, helped by the first expansion in new export orders in seven months. Thursday's print though, extended a divergence from official data that points to the patchy growth in the world's second-largest economy and underscores the need for policy support. China's National Bureau of Statistics released data Wednesday that showed the country's official manufacturing PMI coming in at 49.2 in January, a fourth consecutive monthly contraction — compared with 49 in December. The Caixin manufacturing PMI surveys around 650 private and state-owned manufacturers that tend to be more export-oriented and located in China's coastal regions, while the official PMI surveys 3,200 companies across China.
