Female elephant seals are not delicate creatures. Still, female elephant seals are absolutely dwarfed by their male counterparts, which are typically at least three times heavier. A new analysis of a diverse array of more than 400 mammalian species paints a more complex picture. Males outweigh females in 45 percent of mammalian species, scientists found. And in 16 percent of species, females are the heavier sex.

Britain’s governing Conservative Party was under pressure Tuesday to return more than 10 million pounds to a donor who reportedly said that Diane Abbott, a prominent lawmaker, “should be shot,” and that looking at her made him “want to hate all Black women.”According to an investigation by The Guardian newspaper, Frank Hester, a health care technology entrepreneur, made the comments in 2019, at a meeting held at the offices of his company, The Phoenix Partnership. He has apologized but has not confirmed the Guardian’s account of what he said. Mr. Hester said on Monday that he “accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbot in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor color of skin,” in a statement released by his firm that misspelled her last name. The statement added that he had called Ms. Abbott twice “to try to apologize directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks,” and that he wished “to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life.”

The 10-minute walk took me past a row of colorful houses and apartments, red-and-yellow nasturtiums poking from their yards. The train ride, too, gave me precious time to read. It turned out swapping the train for two wheels took a bit more sweat, but no more time at all. My route took me under freeways, but most of the streets I took were so quiet that I could hear birds singing. Workhorse transport planes fighting as bombersThe rehearsals allow the airmen to rapidly employ a litany of effects via airdrop from airlift platforms, such as the MC-130J Commando II. US Army PhotoTraditionally, the Air Force's workhorse transport planes, like the C-17 Globemaster III and MC-130J Commando II, have aided in the strategic and rapid delivery of fuel and supplies via airdrop. These two types of planes were selected for the initiative because turning them into bombers required fewer modifications and training. Slife said the cargo plane can carry as many long-range weapons as a B-52. This plane, given its size, can carry three times as many long-range precision munitions as a B-52 bomber, according to Slife.

Warren Buffett has always said the foundation of a sound investment is to have a so-called margin of safety. "We insist on a margin of safety in our purchase price," Buffett said in his annual letter to shareholders as long ago as 1992. We believe this margin-of-safety principle, so strongly emphasized by Ben Graham , to be the cornerstone of investment success." Buffett believes that how large a margin of safety one needs boils down to one thing: how well one understands the business. "If you understood a business perfectly — the future of a business — you would need very little in the way of a margin of safety," Buffett said in 1997.

Christmas said it’s impossible to talk about weight gain around menopause without talking about the other elephant in the room: aging. Many women gain weight around menopause. When Wafaa al-Kurd was nearly due to give birth, she said, she weighed less than she did before becoming pregnant and was surviving on rice and artificial juice. She gave birth to a girl weighing nearly six pounds, named Tayma, just over two weeks ago, she said. Since then, her husband has spent his days scouring markets in northern Gaza, where the family lives, trying to find enough food for his wife to breastfeed and keep Tayma alive. Nearly 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition, dehydration and lack of proper health care, according to the Gaza health ministry. In a statement on Friday, the ministry said that about 5,000 women in Gaza were giving birth every month in “harsh, unsafe and unhealthy conditions as a result of bombardment and displacement.”The ministry added that about 9,000 women, including thousands of mothers and pregnant women, had been killed since Israel’s bombardment and invasion began in early October.

Originally designed before America's entry into the Second World War, the YB-49 flying wing was intended to be America's first intercontinental bomber. US Air ForceThe flying wingThe YB-49 was the final iteration of a flying wing bomber concept created by legendary aircraft designer Jack Northrop, founder of the Northrop Corporation. A larger test aircraft, the N-1M, was tested in July of 1940, proving the potential of the flying wing design. The problems with aerial instability could now be solved by computers utilizing fly-by-wire technology and differential thrust, and so a flying wing design was submitted. In order to maintain a powerful bomber force and to keep up with technological innovation, the Air Force launched the Long Range Strike Bomber program in 2011.

The approval also demonstrates that weight loss drugs have significant health benefits beyond shedding unwanted pounds and regulating blood sugar. The FDA said Wegovy patients should use Wegovy in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. Novo Nordisk expects to receive a similar Wegovy approval in the EU this year. The study tested Wegovy in roughly 17,500 people with obesity and heart disease but who did not have diabetes.

Food workers wash their hands as they should only one in three times, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The consequence: Germs spread from food workers’ hands to food, which can trigger an outbreak of dangerous foodborne illness in restaurants. By improving handwashing practices, food workers can be a critical part to preventing outbreaks of diseases like norovirus, Salmonella, and E. coli, it said. “In all circumstances, thorough, frequent hand hygiene is critical for preventing the spread of disease. Technology can potentially assist with increasing compliance and quality of hand hygiene, and that is very exciting indeed,” she said.

In today's big story, we're looking at pharma companies' surging stocks and threatening tech darlings thanks to their weight-loss drugs. And it comes despite only 1% of US adults taking weight-loss drugs, according to Bank of America , which predicts that number could rise to 15% by 2035. Weight-loss drugs are also cutting more than just fat. For Wall Street, meanwhile, the equation is much simpler: Getting more people on weight-loss drugs boosts the economy. The trend, which will be powered by cash-rich mega-cap tech companies, is thanks to strong earnings growth, the bank said.

Britain Is Cutting Taxes Again. Why Now?
  + stars: | 2024-03-07 | by ( Eshe Nelson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
This year, Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor of the Exchequer, had to consider another priority: the upcoming general election. And so on Wednesday, Mr. Hunt announced that he would cut taxes for nearly 30 million workers. It will save the typical employee about 900 pounds ($1,145) a year, Mr. Hunt said. That’s because the tax cuts announced by the Conservative Party are smaller and, crucially, offset partly by some other tax increases. And Mr. Hunt didn’t announce much additional spending.

Amid lackluster prospects for economic growth, the British government announced it would cut taxes for workers ahead of a general election this year. It would take the rate for about 27 million employees down to 8 percent, and follows a two percentage point cut announced less than four months ago. Together, the cuts would save the average employee about 900 pounds ($1,145) a year, Mr. Hunt said. The rate was also cut for self-employed workers. “We can now help families not just with temporary cost-of-living support but with permanent cuts in taxation,” Mr. Hunt, the chancellor of the Exchequer, said in Parliament.

Grey whales have been extinct from the Atlantic Ocean since the 18th century. Scientists were thrilled to see the whale, but its presence is probably linked to climate change. Researchers with the New England Aquarium in Boston found the gray whale while flying 30 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, on March 1. Gray whales were almost hunted to extinction during the era of commercial whaling. They also sound very different — while humpback whales are known for their haunting songs, gray whales make gurgles, grunts and croaks.

Novo Nordisk 's blockbuster drug Ozempic cut the risk of kidney disease progression and related health complications in diabetic patients, according to initial late-stage trial results released Tuesday. Ozempic specifically lowered the risk of kidney disease progression, major cardiac events and death by 24% in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease compared to a placebo. Chronic kidney disease would be a big additional treatment opportunity for Ozempic: Roughly 40% of people with diabetes also have the condition. The trial, called FLOW, first started in 2019 and followed roughly 3,500 patients with diabetes and moderate to severe chronic kidney disease. Last year, a late-stage trial on Wegovy showed that it cut the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 20%.

My brother and I were born on November 19, 2000, 12 weeks and two days before our due date. I feel guilty that our health was poor, I feel guilty my parents were unable to take us both home at once, and I feel guilty that my parents' only experience with birth was so painful. As I've grown up, I've noticed in an effort to counterbalance this guilt, I've done everything in my power to make my parents proud. I often wonder if there are any other young adults who were born prematurely who feel guilty the same way I do. Maybe this life I've been given is a miracle, but whatever it is, I know I'm grateful.
