In the days since a Manhattan jury found Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts, people have mostly been asking one big question. Over the past few days, our colleagues at The New York Times and at the Siena College Research Institute have been trying to answer that question. They spoke with 1,900 people they had previously polled to find out how they are currently thinking. But some have — and they are moving away from Mr. Trump. This week, Astead speaks with voters about how they are thinking about the presidential race after Mr. Trump’s conviction, including with people in one significant group: Trump supporters who said in October that if he were convicted and sentenced, they would back President Biden.

Allman, a free-spirited journalist who challenged American mythmaking in pointed, personal reporting over five decades on topics as varied as the Vietnam War and contemporary Florida, died on May 12 in Manhattan. In March 1970, as a 25-year-old freelance journalist, Mr. Allman, accompanied by two other reporters, walked 15 miles over the mountains in Laos to report for The New York Times about Long Cheng, a secret C.I.A. “At the end of the paved runway were three Jolly Green Giant rescue helicopters,” Mr. Allman reported. “Their presence is believed to be one of the reasons the United States tries to keep Long Cheng secret. New York CNN —New York was just a few weeks away from becoming the first American city to adopt congestion pricing, a system designed to alleviate traffic, reduce air pollution and fund public transit. Then, at the last minute, the governor lost her nerve, citing the dubious claim that it would hurt the working class. Many of the businesses that employ the workers Hochul claims to be protecting are disappointed with the decision. The price was supposed to be high enough to discourage drivers, but not so high that businesses would suffer. As the New York Times notes, congestion pricing has been wildly unpopular “in suburban areas of the Hudson Valley and Long Island where Democrats are desperate to make gains” in this election cycle.

New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.

New York prosecutors told a judge they oppose a request by former President Donald Trump to lift the gag order on him in his criminal hush money case. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office asked Judge Juan Merchan to keep the gag order on Trump in place "at least through the sentencing hearing" for the former president next month, and "the resolution of any post-trial motions." Trump's lawyers earlier this week asked Merchan to vacate the gag order, arguing that the grounds for it no longer exist because the trial had concluded, with Trump being convicted on all 34 felony counts. But prosecutors in their new letter to Merchan said the gag order was "based not only on the need to avoid threats to the fairness of the trial itself ... but also on the Court's broader 'obligation to prevent actual harm to the integrity of the proceedings.' A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday halted the criminal election case against Donald Trump in the state pending the outcome of his bid to disqualify the district attorney prosecuting the former president. The order by the Georgia Court of Appeals all but guarantees that Trump and eight co-defendants in the case will not stand trial before the November presidential election, where Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee. The appeals court said it would hear arguments on Oct. 4 on Trump's effort to boot Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the case. The appeals court must rule on the question by March 14, 2025, according to the court's website.
