The Olympic sendoff friendlies seemed to clue at an early theory: park the bus, play defense-first soccer and frustrate the United States until you find a chance to try an attack. Although having Coffey back from suspension helped toward that end, the United States was still thin in central areas. Berger and Naeher were both instrumental in keeping the score 0-0 throughout regulation, Berger moreso given the United States’ stronger attacking presence. LONDON — European stocks are expected to open higher Tuesday, with global markets looking set to rally after widespread volatility on Monday. On Tuesday, the U.K.'s FTSE index is expected to open 53 points higher at 8,049, Germany's DAX up 122 points at 17,436, France's CAC 40 up 48 points at 7,180 and Italy's FTSE MIB 170 points higher at 31,615, according to data from IG. European stocks fell sharply Monday, with the regional Stoxx 600 index plunging 3.5% and tech and bank stocks declining sharply.

A German court ruled on Tuesday that a protester who shouted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” at a rally in Berlin in October had condoned criminal acts — the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on Israel — and gave her a fine of 600 euros, about $650. The slogan, which has radically different interpretations, was later banned in Germany, viewed as basically constituting a call for the elimination of Israel. The court case had been seen as a test of that law. The Israel-Hamas conflict has underlined the delicate balance in Germany between freedom of expression and the country’s relationship with Israel. One of the foundations of Germany since the Holocaust is support for Israel, a principle known as a Staatsräson, or “state reason.” Since Oct. 7, activism in Germany has been roiled by that tension, with cancellations, bans and fierce debates about what can and can’t be said about Israel and the war.

The tabulations also show Maduro received 3.13 million votes from the tally sheets released. On Thursday, the governments of the three countries issued a joint statement calling on Venezuela’s electoral authorities “to move forward expeditiously and publicly release” detailed voting data.
