Earlier this year, an image of the Pope in a chic white puffer coat went viral, in a striking example of how an AI-generated image can fool the internet. With a flood of this content predicted, we’ll need new ways to tell what’s real and what’s not. “Can we build an AI deepfake detector?” was the initial idea when work started four years ago on one such effort to create a standard for online images, says Dana Rao , general counsel and chief trust officer at Adobe , maker of Photoshop. Adobe is one of the companies spearheading the Content Authenticity Initiative, a global coalition of 2,000 members from tech, policy and media (including The Wall Street Journal).

These distinct designer brands all have something in common: a single parent company named Tapestry, Inc. That parent company has been getting bigger and bigger throughout 2023. "Growth-oriented acquisitions really help to drive the business further, " said Dana Telsey, CEO of Telsey Advisory Group. "New designers can create interest because you can extend your customer base, whether it's extending your customer base older or younger, or extend your customer base globally." The popularity of online shopping has also provoked retailers to pursue mergers that promote expansion online and in stores. As social media creates new avenues for promotion, brands grappling with the high cost of celebrity endorsements are looking to expand their resources through mergers and acquisitions.

New York CNN —Retailers are projecting slower growth this holiday shopping season as inflation, higher borrowing costs, and the resumption of student loan repayments cause many consumers to pull back. The government reported that strong consumer spending drove the economy to a robust 4.9% annual growth rate in the July-September quarter. Consumer confidence dropped for the third consecutive month despite the booming economy. The resumption of student loan repayments last month after a three-year pause could also impact consumer spending. “Student loan repayments will diminish the already dwindling savings among younger households,” Moody’s said in a report this week.

CNN —News organizations are assuming a more aggressive posture toward Israel Defense Forces as it escalates its military operations in the Gaza Strip. The more critical stance has been particularly pronounced over the last 24 hours, following two blasts at the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza, which was established in 1948 when Palestinians fled what is now the current state of Israel. The IDF said it was responsible for both blasts, having targeted a senior Hamas commander and dozens of other militants. In the hours since, IDF representatives have been grilled for answers by ABC’s Ian Pannell, MSNBC’s Symone Sanders, and CNN’s Dana Bash. Meanwhile, Bash asked Major Doron Spielman twice if the IDF could provide evidence supporting its claims that a senior Hamas leader was killed.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Thursday searched the Brooklyn home of Mayor Eric Adams’s chief fund-raiser, Brianna Suggs, a campaign consultant who is deeply entwined with efforts to advance the mayor’s agenda, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The raid apparently prompted Mr. Adams to abruptly cancel several meetings scheduled for Thursday morning in Washington, D.C., to talk to White House officials and members of Congress about the influx of migrants in New York and other major cities. Instead, he hurriedly returned to New York “to deal with a matter,” a spokesman for the mayor said. Ms. Suggs, who could not immediately be reached for comment, is an essential cog in Mr. Adams’s fund-raising machine, which has already raised more than $2.5 million for his 2025 re-election campaign. A third person with knowledge of the raid said agents from one of the public corruption squads in the F.B.I.’s New York office questioned Ms. Suggs during the search of her home.

There are reasons for the central bank to be, as policymakers have said, "careful" in approving any further rate increases. "We think real rates are higher due to very strong US growth," analysts from Citi wrote ahead of this week's Fed meeting. As of the September meeting, Fed officials said they still felt one more rate hike would be necessary. But Powell has also said growth needs to slow - and if it doesn't, it means the Fed's policy rate will need to move higher. It's a good thing that the labor market's strong," Powell said at his press conference following the end of the Sept. 19-20 policy meeting.

Additionally, most Americans with sickle cell are Black and may not trust a health care system that has often failed to provide the most basic preventive and therapeutic care for those with the disease. JERUSALEM, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Israel's Energy Ministry said on Sunday it had awarded 12 licenses to six companies to explore for natural gas off the country's Mediterranean coast, aiming to create more competition and diversify suppliers. It said that one group that includes ENI (ENI.MI), Dana Petroleum and Ratio Energies (RATIp.TA) will explore in an area west of the massive Leviathan field, which supplies Israel with gas and is also used for export. Another group comprised of BP (BP.L) Socar (403550.KS) and NewMed (NWMDp.TA) will explore north of the Leviathan, the ministry said. "The winning companies have committed to unprecedented investment in natural gas exploration over the next three years, which would hopefully result in the discovery of new natural gas reservoirs," said Energy Minister Israel Katz. RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Former UFC champion Francis Ngannou shockingly went the distance in his boxing debut early Sunday morning, even knocking down reigning WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at one point, but Fury remained undefeated after winning a split decision. Two judges gave Fury the fight by scores of 96-93 and 95-94, and the other judge favored Ngannou 95-94. Good thing for Fury, because Ngannou showed early in the scheduled 10-round fight that he wasn't going anywhere. Ngannou staggered Fury early in the fourth, but Fury stayed on his feet and the rest of the round was fairly even after that. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who also made the trip to Saudi Arabia, helped Ngannou get ready for his boxing debut.

How your seasonal chores count toward your fitness goals

What a lot of people don’t realize is that those seasonal chores are functional exercises that can burn more calories than some traditional fitness activities. Unfortunately, too many people forget to use that mindset when doing seasonal chores. Use proper formJust as you would execute an exercise at the gym, you want to perform your seasonal chores with the same attention to proper form. Switch sidesBecause most humans have a dominant side, we tend to favor that side while doing chores. It’s important to take water breaks while doing chores and to stay hydrated after you have finished your work.

Dana said the UAW strikes affected some of its largest light truck programs, including Ford Super Duty, Ranger and Bronco as well as Stellantis' Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. "The longer the UAW strike continues, the greater financial stress there will be across the Tier 2 through Tier 4 supply base," Dana's chief executive James Kamsickas said in a post-earnings call with analysts. Dana expects its full-year sales to be $10.7 billion if UAW strikes through Oct. 31, or $10.2 billion with strikes through Dec. 31. The move comes weeks after French billionaire Francois-Henry Pinault agreed to buy a majority stake in Endeavor rival Creative Artists Agency. Endeavor's market value, likewise, was $7.79 billion as of Wednesday's market close, having declined 21% so far this year. New York CNN —Bud Light might be experiencing a knockout of its own, but this time it’s on purpose. The multiyear sponsorship, which begins on January 1, 2024, makes Bud Light the “official beer partner” of the UFC, with the beer branding having a “highly visible presence” during fights and weigh-ins. The new agreement is a reunion for Bud Light and the UFC, after a previous sponsorship ended in 2017. Bud Light replaces Modelo as UFC’s beer sponsor, the Mexican lager that has dethroned Bud Light from its title of America’s top-selling beer. Sales of Bud Light are still sinking, with volumes down 30% year-over-year for the four weeks ending on October 7, according to NIQ data given to Beer Business Daily newsletter.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bud Light is set to return as the official beer of the UFC in the U.S. next year as the brand tries to recover from a conservative backlash to a promotion with a transgender influencer. Under a new multiyear marketing deal between the promoter of mixed martial arts fights and Bud Light maker Anheuser-Busch, the brewer will become the UFC's “Official Beer Partner” in the U.S. starting Jan. 1, the two companies announced. Bud Light has also faced backlash from Mulvaney’s supporters and LGBTQ+ rights groups, who say the company didn’t do enough to support her. In June, Bud Light lost its place as America’s best-selling beer after more than two decades, slipping into second place behind Mexican lager Modelo Especial. As Bud Light sales plunged, Anheuser-Busch InBev reported a 10.5% fall in U.S. revenue for this year's second quarter.

The children’s book publisher Scholastic, which had begun separating some books about race, gender and sexuality at school book fairs, said this week it was halting the new practice after pointed criticism from some authors, educators and parents. The company had designated 64 titles as optional for the fairs in response to dozens of recent laws in states restricting what content students can be exposed to in schools. Among the books included on the list were biographies of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson of the Supreme Court and the civil rights activist and congressman John Lewis; a novel about a Lakota girl; and a picture book about different family types, including families with adoptive or same-sex parents. The list of the separated titles was called the “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice” catalog. Book fair organizers have had the ability to opt out of all or some of those titles.

Anheuser-Busch InBev's Bud Light will again become the official beer sponsor for the Ultimate Fighting Championship with a six-year marketing partnership, the companies announced Tuesday. As part of the agreement, Bud Light will receive exclusive and prominent branding at UFC fights and events, as well as in-arena promotion. The agreement comes on the heels of a conservative boycott against Anheuser-Busch's Bud Light that began this spring when the brand partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The partnership grants Bud Light visibility in an estimated 900 million TV households in more than 170 countries.
