I started a new job in August 2020 and spent the first 17 months working from home. I joined Insider as an intern in August 2020 and was told I'd be working from home to start with. I sit next to colleagues I'd spoken to for months online but had never met and spend my lunch breaks with people from other teams who I hadn't come across on Slack. And as well as the social side of it, working in the office feels much more collaborative. I really enjoy working in the office – but I'm glad I didn't rush my decision to relocate.
Insider's latest work-advice column is about how managers can tackle remote work loneliness. I have weekly team and one-on-one meetings with colleagues, but apart from those and task-related messages, we don't interact much. I'm not sure how much my team members communicate with each other, but I imagine they have similar experiences. The good news is there are plenty of simple things you can do to help you and your team form social bonds and mitigate your collective feelings of loneliness. Noonan suggested setting aside a couple of hours each week where team members do their own work over video together.
Mabud said the Fed raising interest rates won't combat corporate price-gouging. And Rakeen Mabud, the chief economist at the Groundwork Collaborative, joined "Pitchfork Economics" to identify the second inflationary pressure on top of the pandemic: corporate greed. "Three ocean shippers control pretty much all of the ocean shipping in the entire supply chain," Mabud said. Trucking has become a job of "such rock-bottom quality that nobody wants" to do it, she said, "which, ultimately, is another weak point in our supply chain." The Fed's interest hikes likely won't address any of Mabud's concerns about corporate greed and price-gouging.

For the third year in a row, Olins Business School was ranked the top entrepreneurship program. Out of 131 schools, Olin's MBA program ties with Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business for 29th place in US News & World Report's 2023 Best Business Schools report for its full-time MBA program. "This is not a program where you can get lost in a crowd of 300 to 400 students," Pyles said. In fact, she flagged lack of transparency as an indication the student may lack genuine interest in Olin's MBA program and what it has to offer. Nnakwue reached out to Olin students on LinkedIn and introduced himself as a prospective student interested in learning more about the Olin experience.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Twitch almost doubled its daily user base. Lenke Taylor, Twitch's chief people officer, details how the company adjusted its culture virtually. "A lot of these initiatives were fueled by the passion and direct input of our employees," Taylor said. Her tactical objectives were focused around driving more accountability in hiring, training, employee support, and access to company programs. An employee centric approachDuring the pandemic, Taylor said she learned that empathy is more important than ever.

These workers were tasked with handling the initial bursts of demand, as well as a sharp shift to remote work. The types of skills companies are looking for in leaders are evolving quickly. "We're not returning to what was a classic leadership model — a kind of command-and-control, or 'I'm the fearless leader, get behind me and follow me' model," Todd Moran, chief learning strategist at online learning platform NovoEd, told Insider. Training at scaleGone are the days of limiting leadership training to a select few individuals within a company, Moran said. Purpose and collaborationVirtual leadership training has some immediate benefits. That's why, even before implementing a training session, it's important to clarify and emphasize the importance of building leadership skills.

Employees can focus on the work of serving customers and delivering customer success when solid trust exists in the workplace. A lack of trust hinders productivity for the simple fact that people aren't able to get their jobs done. As you're building trust with people, it's important to open yourself up as a way of investing more deeply in your relationships. A big part of that is knowing who you're meeting with, so do your own research (on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Google search) to familiarize yourself with all the key players. And, if you're facing resistance when you need to deliver feedback, consider these steps:Know whether and when you need to improve.

Case of the Brooklyn Symbolist
  + stars: | 1992-08-30 | by ( Adam Begley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Paul Auster writes novels about lonely souls who try to make meaning out of circumstance -- and he writes under circumstances that look suspiciously meaningful: his office, a small studio apartment, is bare and white and smudged with Brooklyn grime. The window shades are always drawn; were they raised, you would see a brick wall across an air shaft. The same man called the next day and asked again for the venerable detective agency. The novel's protagonist is a solitary writer named Quinn who on three different nights gets a phone call from a man looking for "Paul Auster. Of the Auster Detective Agency."
