A Mammoth First: 52,000-Year-Old DNA, in 3-D

They probed the sample with an innovative experimental technique that revealed the three-dimensional architecture of the mammoth’s genome. Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Canada, was “floored” — the technique had successfully captured the original geometry of long stretches of DNA, a feat never before accomplished with an ancient DNA sample. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Dr. Poinar, who reviewed the paper for the journal. An organism’s full genome resides in cell nuclei, in long, unfragmented DNA strands called chromosomes. “To have the actual architectural structure of the genome, which suggests gene expression patterns, that’s a whole other level,” Dr. Poinar said.

Kate Shaw, a contributing Opinion writer, hosted a written online conversation with Will Baude, a law professor at the University of Chicago, and Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at Georgetown and the author of “The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic,” to reflect on the dramatic end to the Supreme Court term. Kate Shaw: This Supreme Court term ended on a shocking note with Trump v. United States. William Baude: I don’t think the outcome was a surprise, given the arguments and the breadth of the D.C. Circuit opinion, which rejected any claim of executive immunity rather than focusing on the specifics of the Trump case. But I remain confused about what the difference is between Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s quite sensible opinion and the much more sprawling majority opinion — Justice Barrett claims to agree with most of the majority opinion, but I don’t know if we should take that at face value!

When intelligence chiefs of the United States, Israel and Egypt went to Qatar on Wednesday for talks aimed at brokering a cease-fire in Gaza, there was more on the line than Israel’s war against Hamas. Hezbollah and Hamas are both allied with Iran in what they call “the axis of resistance,” a coalition that opposes Israel’s right to exist. Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, who are backed by Iran, have traded fire since the war in Gaza began after Hamas led an attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Israeli government officials and military leaders have in recent weeks toured northern Israel and met with troops stationed there who were preparing for a potential escalation. Whether efforts at de-escalating the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah can succeed may well depend on how the cease-fire talks in Qatar progress.

New York Philharmonic Chief Abruptly Steps Down

Gary Ginstling, the New York Philharmonic’s president and chief executive, abruptly resigned on Thursday after just a year on the job, leaving the orchestra in limbo as it grapples with challenges including an investigation into its workplace culture after two players were accused of misconduct. His departure comes as the orchestra’s musicians and the administration are in the midst of heated talks over a new labor contract; the current agreement expires in September. The musicians have been seeking large wage increases. As the orchestra prepares for its 2024-25 season, it is facing another leadership void: It will not have a music director. Jaap van Zweden’s six-year tenure comes to an end this summer, and his successor, the star conductor Gustavo Dudamel, does not start in the role until 2026.

President Joe Biden mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as "President Putin" at the NATO summit Thursday, an embarrassing verbal stumble at a time when Biden faces intense questions about his mental competency. It also comes as a growing number of Democrats are calling on Biden to drop out as the party's presidential nominee. "And now I want to hand it over to the President of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination," Biden said at the NATO event in Washington, D.C."Ladies and gentlemen — President Putin. President Putin," Biden said, before catching his mistake. "He's gonna beat President Putin, President Zelenskyy," Biden then said.

Since September, when Fraser laid out her vision for a more streamlined Citigroup, the bank’s stock has shot up more than 50%. For the first time in nearly two decades, Wall Street appears to be feeling something almost like optimism about America’s third-largest bank. But speaking of Fraser’s tenure, Mayo sounded unusually sanguine about her progress in simplifying Citi’s notoriously labyrinthine corporate structure. Still, Mayo said the bank offers the “worst-in-class efficiency, returns and stock market valuation.”“I think she will pull it off. Of course, Fraser, who took over in March 2021, is still being haunted by the sins of Citi’s past.

Donald J. Trump’s running-mate search, as much a theatrical production as a political one, is now in its final act. In exactly one week, the Republican vice-presidential nominee is scheduled to address the party’s convention in Milwaukee. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — have sat for repeated cable news interviews. They’ve attended campaign fund-raisers, mingled with members of Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and flown on the Trump plane. And they’ve all completed perhaps the most crucial test: addressing the devoted core of the former president’s MAGA movement onstage at a Trump rally.

CNN —An Alabama death row inmate who is set to be executed by lethal injection next week has asked the state to forgo an autopsy of his body after he is put to death, saying it would violate his religious beliefs as a practicing Muslim, a lawsuit says. Keith Gavin, who is set to be executed next Thursday or Friday, says his body will be subjected to an “invasive autopsy” that would violate his “sincerely held religious beliefs,” as well as Alabama state law, according to the complaint filed by his attorneys last month. After Mr. Gavin’s execution, there will be no question as to who or what caused Mr. Gavin’s death. CNN has reached out to the Alabama Department of Corrections and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office for comment on the lawsuit. Ivey asked the state Department of Corrections to conduct a “top-to-bottom review of the state’s execution process” after the problems came into the national spotlight, CNN previously reported.

Gregg Berhalter, Head Coach of United States reacts after the first half during the CONMEBOL Copa America USA 2024 Group C match between Panama and United States at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 27, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Gregg Berhalter was fired as U.S. men's soccer coach on Wednesday, nine days after his team's first-round exit from the Copa America flamed doubts he was the right person to remain in charge for the 2026 World Cup. Berhalter earned $2,291,136 in 2022, including $900,000 in bonuses for the Americans qualifying for the World Cup and reaching the second round. A top-level men's coach could put pressure on the USSF to increase the salary of newly hired women's coach Emma Hayes. Just 23 months remain before the World Cup comes to the United States for the second time and the Americans play their opener at Inglewood, California, on June 12, 2026.

A bipartisan group of senators on Wednesday launched a renewed effort to ban members of Congress from trading stock. "There is no reason why members of Congress ought to be profiting off of the information that only they get." Wednesday's amendment to an existing stock trading ban bill would immediately forbid members of Congress, the president and the vice president from purchasing stocks and other covered investments. The effort to bar members of Congress from trading stocks has been an uphill battle since at least the start of the Biden administration. The then-Speaker had previously written off the trading ban as a misguided effort to prevent lawmakers from participating in the "free market economy."

CNN —Gregg Berhalter has been fired as the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team following the squad’s Copa America elimination, the US Soccer Federation announced on Wednesday. Berhalter, initially hired in 2018, led the team to the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In June 2023 he was given a new contract that was to run through the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. The poor performance piled pressure on Berhalter, with critics questioning whether he still was the right person to lead the team heading into the 2026 World Cup. The men’s team is next scheduled to play on September 7 in an international friendly against Canada at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

More than 1.3 million utility customers in the Houston area were still without power on Wednesday, two days after Hurricane Beryl swept destructively through the region. Hot, steamy weather on the heels of the storm left many people in the region to swelter without air conditioning. As many as 144 million people across the United States were under National Weather Service heat advisories on Wednesday, from the West and Pacific Northwest to Southeast Texas and many major cities on the East Coast. Large areas of California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, and the corridor from Washington, D.C., to New Jersey were under excessive heat warnings, indicating “extremely dangerous heat conditions.” Forecasters expect dangerous conditions to persist in the West for several more days and to redevelop in the Southeast later in the week.

New York University will take a number of steps to respond to antisemitism as part of a legal settlement with three Jewish students who said they were verbally harassed because of their identities and support for Israel, the university and plaintiffs said in a joint statement on Tuesday. The university will pay some money as part of the agreement, and create a new administrative position to make sure all allegations of discrimination and harassment are responded to consistently and adequately, among other actions. Their lawsuit is part of a wave of litigation faced by schools around the country from Jewish, Muslim and Arab students who say they have experienced harassment and discrimination on campus since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Columbia, Harvard, U.C.L.A. and the University of Pennsylvania are among the schools that have faced similar suits from Jewish students.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday sharply criticized pharmacy benefit managers, saying in a scathing 71-page report that “these powerful middlemen may be profiting by inflating drug costs and squeezing Main Street pharmacies.”The regulator’s study signals a significant ramping up of its scrutiny of benefit managers under the agency’s chair, Lina Khan. It represents a remarkable turnabout for an agency that has long taken a hands-off approach to policing these companies. has so far stopped short of bringing a lawsuit or other enforcement action against a benefit manager. But the industry fears that the report could lead to a formal investigation into its practices or to a lawsuit accusing benefit managers of anticompetitive conduct. The agency’s findings could also fuel legislative efforts in Congress and in the states to impose limits on the industry.
