CNBC spoke to Foster about the economics of abortion access and the financial impacts of the end of Roe v. Wade. Diana Greene Foster: One good thing about The Turnaway Study is that our demographics closely resemble national demographics on who gets abortions. [They're also] more likely to have evictions, have a larger amount of debt if they're denied an abortion. The number of public records, such as bankruptcies, evictions and court judgements, significantly increased for those denied abortions, by 81%. So, it isn't the case that everyone who wants an abortion is now carrying a pregnancy to term.

Adding impetus to their effort is the fact Israeli military strikes are now hitting UN peacekeeping bases in southern Lebanon, which house European troops. European reproach of Israel reached new levels when Israeli military strikes began hitting posts of the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. The UN has said Israel’s military has fired on its peacekeepers multiple times in recent weeks, injuring more than a dozen. ‘We have blocked everything’Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also condemned Israel’s actions in Lebanon, including an Israeli military strike that hit a UN peacekeeping base where around 1,100 Italian troops are stationed. In an earlier move that protested Israel’s war in Gaza, Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized Palestinian statehood in May.

Analysts pick winners from China stimulus measures
  + stars: | 2024-10-20 | by ( Evelyn Cheng | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Now that China's key ministers have spoken on stimulus, analysts have narrowed down the stocks likely to benefit. Chinese stocks have tempered their recent rally as investors await more policy details. Beyond interest rate cuts, the most tangible Chinese stimulus policies include subsidies to boost consumption with a trade-in program, along with incremental property market support. They screened for mainland-traded Chinese stocks with relatively high dividend yields and strong cash flow. While Chinese property developers may not bounce back right away, HSBC analysts expect construction software company Glodon, listed in Shenzhen, can benefit from property market stabilization.

My freelance translation work is flexible and fits around my job as a university teacher. AdvertisementMarco Simões started using AI for translation in 2020. I decided to try out translation work on the side after someone at Intel suggested I work as a translator there. Using AI has meant my productivity has increased, and I can accept more jobs than I did in the past, but pay doesn't necessarily increase. Using AI tools, such as Bard and ChatGPT, I can translate around 1,000 to 1,200 words an hour.

As more retirees start to claim Social Security, there are not enough workers contributing to the program to make up for that increase in benefit payments. But the trust fund Social Security relies on to pay retirement benefits is projected to be depleted in 2033. watch nowBoth presidential candidates — former president Trump and Vice President Harris — have vowed to protect Social Security benefits. "Seniors should not pay tax on Social Security," Trump wrote on July 31 in all capital letters on social media platform Truth Social. Ending taxes on Social Security benefits would move the insolvency date of Social Security's trust fund closer by over one year, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

If Netanyahu is feeling that pressure, that wasn't evident from his comments on Friday. International insistence that the Israeli government ease the suffering in Gaza had already intensified in the weeks before Sinwar was killed. Domestically, that may be more of a complex dance for Netanyahu, who heads a still-fragile coalition comprised of many of Israel’s most hawkish lawmakers. Until then, we will intensify military pressure,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — whom both major U.K. political parties have considered sanctioning this year — said in a post on X. Before Hamas' attack, Netanyahu was scrambling to keep onside the disparate right-wing and religious parties in his fractious ruling coalition while facing huge protests against him.

The Hamas leader was “the caring father and the leader of the Palestinian cause,” Moslah added. “May God have mercy upon him.”For others, Sinwar’s death was an unsurprising outcome for a hardened jihadi militant. He spent years in an Israeli jail learning Hebrew and studying the inner workings of Israeli politics and military tactics. It showed a man, identified by Israel as Sinwar, sitting in a chair in a destroyed apartment as an Israeli drone buzzed around him. Moments later, the Israeli military would fire its kill shot — a missile destroying the building.

The benchmark seven-day reverse repurchase rate will also be lowered by 20 basis points and the medium-term lending facility rate reduced by 30 basis points, People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng told a financial forum in Beijing. “The global water crisis is a tragedy but is also an opportunity to transform the economics of water — and to start by valuing water properly so as to recognize its scarcity,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization and one of the commission’s co-chairs in a statement. With nearly three billion people already in areas experiencing unstable water trends and several cities sinking due to the loss of below-ground water, densely populated areas such as northwestern India, northeastern China and southern and eastern Europe will bear the brunt of global water mismanagement, the report says. “The global water crisis is a ticking time bomb. Even so, a lack of public funds being devoted to water issues by lawmakers around the world will do little to solve the problem. Governments “can’t even react to the symptoms of the water problem, let alone solve the problems if they’re being fiscally strangled,” said UCL's Mazzucato.

The EU's NIS 2 cybersecurity directive sets a high benchmark for companies over their internal cybersecurity systems and practices. On Thursday, the new directive officially became enforceable by member states. However, most EU member states have yet to implement NIS 2 in their own respective national laws, meaning that enforcement is likely to be spotty. NIS 2 — or the Network and Information Security Directive 2 — is an EU directive that aims to increase the security of IT systems and networks across the bloc. Fladgate's Wright said that effectiveness of NIS 2 as a regulation will largely depend on consistent implementation and enforcement across EU member states.
